QuoteMy Dad has a jar full of old and very worn coins, going back to Queen Victoria IIRC. Some are so worn you can barely make out the monarch.
I still have my Dad's jar of these. No idea of the oldest. Occasionally idly wonder if they're worth anything.

It has been pointed out how awful it would be if Andrew was older than Charles.

Worn coins unlikely to have any value. Good ones maybe... but not a lot... unless VERY old.
Rarities... stamping errors, very short Reign, etc.... maybe.
I have a few 20ps which were reputedly selling for hundreds at a point... but so many also found some that not worth the bother!
When Charles coins minted, will put a few to one side... he IS getting on! But Mint provides Many Pallets of coins for circulation... once out, very little value.

As small child... old or Foreign coin tin was 'interesting'. One could 'teach' some History or Geography to a child. Old denominations or pre Euro stuff!
Or... one could imagine 'who' might have had a coin from pre WW1 Or WW2 in their pocket.

As for the several 'Cash Boxes' buried in the garden... for whoever unearths them... they contain Dead Cats!  :o  ;D

Has it?  By whom?  Fortunately he isn't so it is a gratuitous and irrelevant observation, I'd say.

Just heard "God Save the King" sung for the first time at the Test match between SA and England.

Spine tingling stuff, very moving, after a perfectly observed minutes silence.

I can't say that I have heard it said in the media but I suspect it has been going through many peoples minds; it has certainly gone through mine when thinking about the whole Royal institution in the past. In the circumstances I really do not see it as either a gratuitous or irelevant observation.

Quote from: John Cook on 10 September 2022, 09:52:15 AMLargely by people outside our shared demographic who like upsetting humourless reactionaries with an affinity for archaic and dying institutions. I am not so sure about it being irrelevant as it does indicate the problem with hereditary heads of state- what happens when you get a wrong un? Sadly the royal family has  managed to get itself entangled with the likes of Epstein, Savile, Mountbatten and Peter Ball. However, I suspect we are now beginning to touch on politics.

As I said I feel a little sorry for Charles as the yellow press is going to crucify him over his quite genuine support for animal welfare and green issues.

Oh, and John, you aren't  above  a little bit of gratuity yourself.

The CROWN will go on. Along with So many, the passing of The Queen 'feels' like a Big Hole left. Her presence provided 'Stability' throughout My life... unlike Politicians, Parties and the things they signed up to. I was watching the schoolkids trooping down the street on Friday morning... thinking 'End Of An Era'... BUT IT IS NOT. Their Era is what THEY will make of it. Hopefully some will continue what WE believed in... and The Queen Backed up, very quietly. I have never accepted King Charles III's, (OMG, ain't That strange!), detractors. I think he will continue to do fine. He HAS done pretty well up to now in Many ways. Long Live The King!

Just to comment: Various Monarchs or family members...have had unfortunate lives... or tendencies... or links to UNDESIRABLE factions... as had U.S Presidents, Russian Leaders... need I go on?

Prince Andrew was doing ok... then 'another' disaster marriage, irrelevance as 'Second Son' with Money... and 'contacts'. Personally, I do not Believe'allegations'... but 'Ditched', by Those 'advisors'to the Crown... I do not think his Mother ditched him in herself. Prince 'Harry' was also doing ok... but has made his own bed... up to him.

It is the 'lot' of the "spare" to lead a strange life ... on stand-by but hopefully never needed.

There was a comment on the radio that the moment her father gained the thrown, the young Elizabeth added the words (or similar) to her nightly prays "please let me have a baby brother"!

It is a bit like the Billy Connolly quote:
"The desire to be a politician should bar you for life from ever becoming one." Maybe it should be the same with all walks of public life?

But I do like the Billy Connolly quote ... "Don't vote. It just encourages them...." - as that always brings a wry smile to my lips  ;D
'He could have lived a risk-free, moneyed life, but he preferred to whittle away his fortune on warfare.' Xenophon, The Anabasis

I'm too lazy to alter the quote below from President to King - I'm sure you can make the edit in your head :)

I agree.  The trouble is that all figures in the public eye attract adverse from comment from all kinds of people with one agenda or another.  The Royal Family is no different.  Republicans have little or nothing good to say about it.  Why would they?  They want rid of it and the Sovereign replaced by, presumably, an appointed or elected president as Head of State.  No thanks.  Why anybody would want to be like any other nondescript republic is beyond me.
The Crown will indeed go on and the change will be almost seamless.  Charles behaved badly towards Princess Dianna, no doubt in my mind, but she wasn't without fault either.  All the eulogising came after her tragic death and is all a bit tiresome now.  It suspect you are right about Charles.  His performance remains to be seen but he has, as somebody pointed out yesterday, had the longest apprenticeship in history.  So I expect he will do alright.  I hope he remains himself and where it doesn't clash with politics, he continues to speak on subjects he cares about.
Three of the late Queen's children have had unfortunate marriages.  Nothing unusual really though it is above the UK average.  The only place I have seen or heard concern expressed about Prince Andrew in the context of the succession is on this forum.  He isn't a candidate, unless an unprecedented, and unimaginable, cull of other candidates took place, so it is irrelevant and unnecessary tittle-tattle.  Prince Harry is a major disappointment.  I think he is weak, easily led and not the sharpest knife in the drawer.  Now, there is an unfortunate marriage if ever there was one.  The Duchess of Sussex proved entirely unsuited to the role of a Royal spouse.
I don't remember the funeral of George VI, but I do remember the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.  My parents bought a television so we could watch it.  The TV comprised a huge wooden case with a screen no bigger than a piece of A4 paper.  You had to close the curtains in order to watch it.  We were the first family to have a TV in our street and there must have been at least a dozen neighbours crammed into our sitting room.  So, she was a constant throughout my life, just as you describe.  She was also my Commander in Chief for a large part of my adult life, to whom I swore "by almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors and that I will as in duty bound honestly and faithfully defend her Majesty, her heirs and successors in
person, crown and dignity against all enemies and will observe and obey all orders of her Majesty, her heirs and successors and of the generals and officers set over me."  So, God Save the King and confusion to his enemies.
