I've started to build some French units for the 9YW.  First is Humieres.  I am using a multi basing concept on 40 by 80mm.

What steered you towards such a 'minimalist' sized unit? Rules? Reality? I love massed units with loads of figures for this era as illustrated by Redstef (inter alia) but I no longer have the enthusiasm (or the time?) to build 'big unit' armies and find, once you get engrossed in a game, unit size isn't so important as you first imagined.

I too once coveted "big battalions", and still do that in 28mm SYW at a steady slow pace, but like you find the evolved hobbyist will learn to desire games with smaller more abstract units as well as rules.  It offers more achievable ends I think.  Actually getting to play a bunch of connected games with a campaign in the background is a lot of fun and has yet to happen with the "big battalions" in spite of 15 years of effort. If you get me started on 10s (sixes are just a little too little for me) I will spill pages of ink but will say I love the epic look, portability, challenge of the terrain which is actually more demanding than larger scales, as well as diorama opportunities with small multi bases like this.  Using negative space on the base is important I think as real sculptures need negative space to be successful, so do 10mm miniature bases.  Basing an entire battalion by using just one base with the historical variations in formations and troop types is brilliant fodder for sculpting I believe.

I do like your approach on these. 

I have gone with 12cm frontage, made of three 40x40mm bases, with around 45 figures - and while my units do have a good solid density to them - they are also a lot of painting to do to create the units, and the project is rather stalled. Going with this approach, I'd have at least twice as many units done.
