At the risk of showing massive ignorance.....The first picture "Thought to have been done by Muslim artists". (I paraphrase....)

I thought Islam forbade the depiction of any living 'thing' in art ?

Well, yes and no. There's a general proscription on the depiction of living beings, but that's changeable with time and place. The absolute no-no is depicting God, which seems to never have been done. Next is Muhammad, though occasionally that's circumvented by showing a human with no face depicted, sometimes with a halo of fire.
Humans and animals or living things are also not supposed to be depicted, hence the turn to geometric patterns in lots of Islamic art but one can think of lots of Persian and Ottoman art showing people in great detail. Druzhina's sites have lots of Ottoman images I have worked from.
Depends on the strictness of the doctrine being enforced.

Before we moved over here, I was on the local radio......Or radio 2...... about four times a day. (True  )......I've got me on umpteen shows burned onto CD.....And Nobby's NEVER EVER getting those...'cos' he'll put them up on t'internet.

There are also Muslim images that have been defaced; Maqamat of al-Hariri, manuscript: Suleymaniye Library, Esad Efendi 2916, 1242-1258AD  or the heads virtually cut off: Maqāmāt of al-Hariri, St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies,manuscript C-23 of c. 1225-35AD.  There was also a Byzantine iconoclastic period and similar episodes during Christian reforms.
