I spent a very pleasant day in Fredericksburg, Va. in 2013 during the local 4th July celebrations. I managed to catch the end of the parade  #-o, strolled through the thriving street market that had sprung up overnight a short distance from our hotel and visited the sites of George Washington's childhood home and the Civil War battlefield. Later that evening I witnessed a very distant fire work display from one of the bridges over the Rappahannock before adjourning to a very nice ale house where I stopped the whole pub in its tracks by proposing a toast. "To the British!" said I.  It was great to see everyone's faces! Yes, I survived.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Well they've tried the Germans, the Russians, the Chinese, the Japanese, Asians (unspecified), the South Americans (unspecified), the Arabs (unspecified, but includes a wide swath of non-Arab countries) and the Koreans (North). The Ukranians also got a good run until they got invaded and became heroes.

They can't use the Irish or the Italians because of "the old country", so we're running short of new American enemies.

How about the Spanish? Dig up the old Phillipines conflict? "Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!" Could use all those actors they used as South Americans to be evil Spaniards.

@ Westy - Fredericksburg, you probably know, is the current home of HISTORICON - mid July is a great time to visit! Recommend you not propose your toast in South Boston (Mass), however!  :D

@ fsn - to continue the list - at one time or the other - Canadians, Mexicans, each other, space aliens, supernatural entities, earthquakes, big corporations, any character not portrayed by John, Bruce, Arnold, Will, Denzil, or Sylvester.....

It is raining buckets here (again) so probably no fireworks  :(

PS We can probably all agree Mel brings a very consistent hermeneutic to the study of History  :)
