Carla Lane, the writer of Butterflies, Bread and Liver Birds fame went the other day. Eighty three she was. A good run. According to the news here she was a great animal activist.

I loved Butterflies. Mohammed Ali had a good innings considering how long he had been suffering with his disease.

I was discussing Ali's visit to Upper Hutt in 1979 with the guys over last night's game.

Yes, the Greatest really did visit little Upper Hutt :o
He was invited by a local boxing coach who had taken an amateur team to the US to fight an amateur team supported by Ali.

They well remembered him talking to a local High School assembly. Two good questions with great answers...

Q. What was your toughest fight?
A. My first marriage

Q. What does it feel like to be hit really hard on the chin?
A. Come here and I'll show you

I liked the story his biographer told. (Which apparently was a favourite of the man himself.)

M.A. was on chartered plane, about to take off, when the stewardess said,

"Please would you fasten your seat belt Mr Ali ?"
"Superman don't need no seat belt."
"Superman doesn't need a plane, Mr Ali."

Yes, a shame about Dave Swarbrick, but he gave it a good go. I only got to see him play the once, but it was a good once :-)

Cheers
