2017 Paint-Off - Winner!

Sort of.

We have been playing a lot or Irregular Wars lately, which is Rennaissance, which has a Steppe Khanate list which is probably the great great grand children of these guys - but basically lots of guys on horses with bows. It plays well - you fire showers of arrows while maintaining distance then pick on damaged or isolated units to charge in and finish them off.

We are now moving to a Fantasy version - so the Mongols have a few additions (Eagles, Giant Sand Worms and Gollums) to help them against the Orcs and Undead.

Great progress Fred

I managed to paint sod all this weekend  :(

Thanks Matt, I can 'blame' the weather as it was so changeable we did stuff around the house, and I got a lot of time for painting. Even if most of it was painting bases brown and sticking on flock. Both of which are fairly time consuming.

Frogmen with crossbows

Some Magister Militum figures I've had for a while - probably the fastest troops to paint ever! Grey under coat, wash of GW Asurmen Blue, dry brush of Vallejo Azure. Dark grey crossbows, and hot orange for quivers and eyes! (full recipe given as I've got the same again to paint).

The GW wash as usual acted like a stain, so I'm glad I put it on first and put the light blue on top.

Couple of bits of detailing to do, then they are done!

Much quicker than bloomin' Landskenckts (and easier to spell) with their slashed clothing.

And they are based!

So not only were they very quick to paint, you can only get 4 on a base, so 8 stands from 1 pack!!

Ta, I'm really pleased with how these have come out. As mentioned above, they were a very nice change of pace from the Landscheckts

Ta Jorge

Not much painting the last couple of weeks. I was away on holiday last week, and stuck together a few 28mm plastics - for Saga Crescent and Cross.

This week I have been having a look at our group's home brew fantasy mass battle rules - which we put a lot of effort into last year, but the project rather stalled under its own weight. After playing quite a bit of Irregular Wars, we had hopes it would scale up to big battles and cross over to Fantasy. But it didn't quite - while Irregular Wars gives a great game when played as is - we decided that it wasn't quite the right basis for big battles. So we have had a re-focus on the aims of our rules, and I've had another go and squashing together all the ideas we have liberated from other games. A trial game on Friday, actual worked, we'd expected an extended work through and many changes, but actually were able to play a game!

On Saturday when I was tidying away the figures and scenery from the game, I decided to have a bit of a sort through the cupboard with the gaming stuff in, a mad idea, but it really was getting out of control!

I found the following that had been rather forgotten about

Brigade Models 2mm houses, made into village and urban bases for GWSH

And this box of Saxon buildings, and Mongol Gers and some castle walls

I also found a box of blue foam that I had bought a couple (or more...) years ago. And inspired by recent posts on LAF showing how easy it is to make stuff from blue foam, I got out the craft knife and made this

An Aztec style temple - it only took about 20 mins to cut out the main pieces - it took rather longer to inscribe the stones
