Just wanted to publicly say thank you to SteveJ for today:

• a) letting a complete stranger from the internet in to his home
• b) putting together a scenario to demonstrate AVBCW and Blitzkrieg Commander II
• c) being gracious in defeat as this complete noob twonked him!

Had a great game, got to appreciate the BkCII rule set and had some excellent conversation about gaming in general. And I was good and didn't run a victory lap around his front room either!

Well Neil, that's very kind of you . Next game I'll move the table into the middle of the room so you have space for your circus maximus lap . To be fair Neil did execute a good plan with only a few pointers from me re: the rules, such as putting his artillery and mortar on the hill, which promptly knocked the living daylights out of my infantry . Naturally he had beginners luck and next game I will get my revenge...

Reminds me of a DBM doubles game I had arranged via the DBM Yahoo group while on holiday in Australia.

I arrived at the local organisers house to find a note on his door, "Make yourself at home, I'm picking the other two up from the station".
Not only was he letting a stranger he met via the Internet into his house, he was giving me free rein while he was not there

I read a very nice book on Macedonia while I waited for the other players to arrive. It seemed appropriate as I was to be Phillip in our game and my host was to be Alexander.
My host was a little disconcerted during the game when Alexander was overlapped, flanked and rolled low. Three of the players cheered Alexander's death

I agree gamers are good hosts even if you haven't met them face to face before.

While I was over in the UK in June met up with Ithoriel in Scotland and Leon gave me a guided tour of Pendraken HQ.

Had a great time on both occasions (that was a great meal we had Mike )

and even got to buy some 10mm PM stuff direct from the factory

I've seen too many games at my old club where newbies are introduced to a new ruleset, only for them to be confronted by too large a force to control, too much detail and with the club member intent upon winning the game. Unsuprisingly they either didn't come back or moved on to another ruleset .

If you want to encourage a newbie, it's always in your best interest to help them win their first game.
