or her. There are females these days, and the hobby is much the better for it.

The "Her" was implied, I am fuly aware there are ladies in the hobby and on the forum.

We could of couse go down the Monty Python "Life of Brian" routine here  ;D

I cope by hardly ever painting anything at all.

This can be done by focusing obsessively on the period 1850-1900 and getting endless use out of the armies I already have, including ones I painted up when I was a teenager, supplemented occasionally by troops I paint up specifically for a particular action I'm planning to fight, or by ordering ready-painted armies if there is a serious gap.

Not that I don't find painting figures satisfying - I do love it when a unit is finally based, varnished and ready for action - but time is limited and I'd rather spend it researching battles, writing scenarios and playing the games.

Alas, I do that too.

But it doesn't stop me buying new things :(

Which I'm then too busy researching the period, reading and evaluating rules and planning the next project to paint ... DOH!

Not sure if I should enter this conversation as I don't have a 'lead mountain', or even a mole hill.

On the painting desk I've got 36 10mm arab archers, 12 Arab Cavalry 10mm based for SAGA Crescent and Cross and 5 Dystopian Legions French Marines for IHMN.

On the corner of the desk is an old whiskey tin containing all the figures waiting to be painted, if I can't get any more figures in the tin I don't need to buy any more.  Every couple of months I empty the tin on to the desk gto see if there's something interesting in the bottom and if I can't remember what some figures are for I bin them.

I think this atitude started when I was unemployed then back at uni, about three years of being absoluely skint made me make sure I really needed figures before buying any and now it's just a habit I've got into.

But ...but.... You do need them, you always need them! You die if you have painted everything! It's like insulin for a diabetic!  :o :o :o ;)

I have been pretty disciplined for my painting projects. Currently I am painting all the FPW Corps for the Imperial era. This is for my Sappy Nappy rule set. I am only doing one project at a time.

For the French I have the VII and the XII Corps to do and for the Prussians the XI, VII and the VIII as well as the 3rd Cav XX. Just finished the HQ for the XI, VII and the VIII Corps. I do plan to get into the 3 Prussian corps that came up later (I, II and VI as well as some landwehr).  Also a couple of the republican period corps.

I didn't start these until I finished my 6mm Peninsular armies at 20:1. I have Massena's army (3 corps plus supply), Wellington's at the same period (less 3 or 4 independant Portugueses brigades, and a Spanish army of 5 divisions of infantry plus cavalry.

So waiting in the wings are 2400 scale WWII ships, 6mm ACW and maybe someday going back to finish the 15 mm ACW for Gettysburg.

No! I am strong, my will is strong and I am determined not to weaken.....

But don't get me started on how much I've spent on climbing gear over the years, last year I was finally convinced that I didn't need four tents and a camper van so now make do with three tents and a camper van.  :D

I have my vices but a lead mountain isn't one of them.  ;)

I too have a lot of stuff lying around... Napoleonic French, Austrian and British, and Flames of War germans that need to be done... and two entire armies of 6mm that I havent decided what to do with yet.

I think its also important to have multiple projects of different "types", ie 15mm and 10mm, modern and napoleonic, so that when you get bored painting brown, green and dunkelgelb, you can switch over to painting Napoleonic French, and once that gets tedious painting all that line infantry, paint some Austrian Uhlans, and so on. Diversifying is important so you dont get the painters block from repetitive tediousness.

That said, I haven't touched my Flames of War in a while - just not that inspired with the ruleset anymore, and Battlefront and I have put our relationship on hold (like many others).

There are, I believe, other WWII rulesets ;)

Have to agree with 026 - multiple projects keep me and my painting fresh, hence the 15mm Belgians at the mo. I particularly like the headswaps I can do with the PP figures.

Far too much unfinished, like most of us I guess?   :(

At the moment (started but not yet finished):

28mm
GW Dark Elf army (for AoS)
Bolt Action Russians to finish (mostly cavalry)
AVBCW to finish (mostly bicyclists, and other weirdness)
Necromunda gang
Mordheim terrain board
Perry Samurai (for Ronin)
4 boxes of Perry WotR soldiers to build and add to my army, plus about 20 metal cavalry
GW 40k Space Marines (repaint job from Raven Guard to Crimson Fists - plus add ons)
GW 40k Ork army (some of the vehicles have been pinched and used for my VSF 28mm collection, re: In Her Majesy's Name...)
GW Bretonnians (which i'm painted for use with Lions Rampant

15mm
Russians (ImagiNation) for Maurice
Medieval Swedish (for DBM)

10mm
Warband dwarf army
Warband goblin army
Warband barbarian army
Pd FPW French army
Pd Russian Napoleonic army

Other
Dystopian Wars Empire of the Sun additions (mostly rocket escorts, & flying aircraft carrier)

Uh...all that depresses me...

And then coming up are Warband undead and taurians, and of course a 28mm fantasy army for Dragon's Rampant...

Maybe this is why i'm playing X-Wing a lot.  No painting!!!   ;D
