Our corner of the world celebrates a rather special day on April 25 next year with the 100th anniversary of the Gallapoi landings. Getting at least some of the family to the dawn parade will be a challange  :o

Looking at what we potentially could do with the 10mm 1914 and Turkish stuff that we have to hand by then I provisionally arrived at W Beach and the River Clyde.....hmm

anybody know of any suitable 10mm WW 1 longboats/steam pinnaces/lighters that could be used for the landing?

10mm models of the River Clyde and the forts might be a bit more challenging...at this stage just an idea  ;)

I have looked at this from point of view of a diorama.

Paper shipwright their site is  www.papershipwright.co.uk have paper models in 1/250 which are not hard to scale up, and scratchbuild in balsawood.

I did it to their X lighter some years ago.  There are also a few useful tug/lighter craft in the same scale.

The SS Clyde is a more serious challenge. At 344ft  this is a big model.  There is a good hull and bits in the form of the Lingberg Nantucket light ship in 1/90 (?) which I think I can acquire from a mate's scrap box.

Its also worth looking at what's available in larger scales (H0,1/100  and Revell 'fit the box'  etc and blodger  them down with fittings and parts to 1/150. I have the 1/240 Revell Campbelltown blogged up to a 1/150 German WW1type A/111 torpedo boat. There might even be an image on site somewhere......

Vic, aka Grumpy Old Man is the authority on this type of scale up and sourcing.

Thanks Sunray

found some good scale plans for a x lighter on on the x lighter org website.  8)
For River Clyde might have it offboard and troops enter on the lighters
after taking fire offboard to represent the gangways. TFL have a scenario of this action in one of their
specials using ITLSU rules, which we use and I have a copy of the scenario.

This could work yet.....onto Dilbar blog for some inspirational ideas on fort building ...
I'd use polystyrene as forts were bombarded earlier by battleships and period photos show
this damage.

What have i started now?  :o

Hello PtS

There's nothing much ready made unfortunately. There are ship's boats or lifeboats:-

there are these in soft flexible foam for RC types http://www.greywolfsquadron.com/catalogpages/accessories

and these resin ones for modellers (pricey though):-

http://www.model-dockyard.com/acatalog/1_144_Scale.html

You could use card models if that floats your boat (sometimes I'm a legend in my own lunchtime :D).

Card model of small steamer at this forum post:-

http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,6321.0.html

A French Peniche that you could easily convert to a barge:-

http://amigamaquette.free.fr/chargefichier.php3?fichier=peniche

Here are 2 pages that show non-pirate free card models:-

http://hamapaper2.zouri.jp/thumblink2/thumb50.html
http://papermau.blogspot.com.br/search/label/boat

Of course there's always the option of the infamous paddle wheeler with the paddle wheels left off  :D:-

Or my old favourite the Zhong Shan, the use-anywhere ship  :).

If you find something you want to try with the card models let me know and I'll help with any scaling etc.

Cheers

If I was to scratch build a couple of generic small boats, waterline in plastic  - say 5mm to 8mm in length - and pass to Pendraken would there be a market for them beyond  PTS, GOM and myself ?

I was thinking of a generic classical clinker look that would fit dark ages to modern in 10mm scale.

Be good to hear an estimate from Leon what the estimated price retail price range would be for a cast in that size.

Sorry guys, I mean 5cm to 8cm -  or 2" to 3"- in the old length

In the past I modified Frontline resin barges 25mm scale into passable 1/150 lighters of ww1 or VBCW vintage. Nice size for the table.

The Lightship kit is actually Eastern Express 1/110 South Goodwin - I saw the kit today - it has potential for SS Clyde 1/150 conversion

Hello PtS

I came across http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOMYTEC-1-150-KOMONO-064-Hauling-ship-/251618145248 which are Tomytec 1/150 barges for $10 each. The postage is harsh if you're only buying one but goes down for multiple purchases.

I've dealt with this seller before and it was a pleasure. He has his buildings on special as well if you want to bulk up an order to save on postage

Artitec (link) makes some N-scale (resin) kits of various boats that might be useful. They are in 1/160 scale so maybe a tad small?

There are these rowing boats, but there are some other ones as well. Some can also be bought ready made.

For Grumpy: I would also think that this passenger ship might be quite at home on the Mekong (or Yangtze/Congo/etc)?

Water is indeed the essential ingredient of life, because without water you can't make coffee!

Yes I've seen the Artitec stuff before then I've looked at the prices here and from Europe.... and decided that my boys are probably past their use by date to sell to white slavers . :d

Lovely stuff though. If an unknown rich relative dies and leaves me money, I'll definitely get some. The shrimp boat looks useful as well (though I can see myself super-gluing the rigging to my fingers).

Lord Kermit of Birkenhead

You have rigged 1/1200th scale square riggers then ?  :D

Don't need to get that small. The 1/150 Zhong Shan was being difficult and when I got everything off my fingers and cleared from the ship I loudly declared that you wouldn't be able to see it at that scale anyway. Shame there was no one else there to listen to my rationalisation  :D
