The Muscovites completely failed to break the impetus of a Polish invasion. Every Polish charge seemed perfectly timed to whack into a critical Russian unit. The imperial guard cavalry didn't break, but they were steadily pushed back with ever-greater casualties, and it was plain by the time the Russians surrendered that Ivan was on his way to a long holiday in Krakow. The Jiltsi attack failed to make any impression on the western cuirassiers as well.

Never teach your wife to cover her flank with a lighter unit when she launches a strong attack; she might just be listening and remember to do it! And try to roll decently when your Tatars, who should have no trouble brushing aside the Lisowski Cossacks, are critically needed in a standard encircling move.

The Boyars were outclassed, but since the action was right outside the walls of the fort, the Poles paid a bit for this success, losing a number of noble cavalry to support fire from the battlements (in fact, the Siberian levy archers caused more damage than the streltsi). I had a sneaky reserve of Tatar HC in the courtyard, but with a Polish force covering the gates, I never managed to get them out as planned.
Tower in fort by Leven. Boyars mainly Kallistra; you may note they can fit in with smaller ranges without too much loss of credibility. Actually, I regret that they're one of the few ranges of 10mm who don't do Zulus; I'd like to have the occasional giant of a man looming menacingly in the ranks of my impis.

The streltsi survived a charge, amazingly enough, but Muscovite morale was broken by then. It was an humiliatingly brief battle; about three rounds. Ah, well, the little lady was very pleased with herself at the end.

The figures are mainly Pendrakens, with a few Irregular Miniatures here and there; these were particularly useful for the Russkies, though a late ancients modeler may note Pendrakens in the Imperial guard too.

Very nice armies and good report. Full of flavour. I wonder what is a Jiltsi ? Never heard about it and google it gives 0 results.

It is a luck your wife share the hobby with you, so take care of her! what rulesets do you use?

Thanks for sharing

Jiltsi are the guards horse with angel wings in pairs on their backs. The plural form may be why the Googling didn't work. The singular may be something like jilets, but my Russian is minimal. They're illustrated in the Osprey book and in George Gush: http://greatestbattles.iblogger.org/Renaissance/22&23_Muscovites.htm

Always learning something with you FK. It is right, the picture is very little but you modifed the Irregular figure with the wings, isn't it? so cool!

Any chance of reading your home made rules? or having some words from the author to know a little bit more about them?

petercooman

Looks great FK! Nice and colourfull armies!

And congrats to the wife for the win  :D

The author is always delighted to send a copy to anyone who asks, and flattered by the interest. Email?

I didn't have to modify the Jiltsi figures; IM provides them with wings to glue on. If you want the little leather dragon on the spear, you'll need to get creative there (but I'm pretty sure it was just for parades).

FierceKitty

As I say, they're in the Osprey The Army of Ivan the Terrible, and the George Gush book, which my earlier post has a link to. I have no other references.
