Good report, Peter.
Thinking about your hills and looking around our house, the best suggestion I can see is some low oval wicker baskets (without handles) that we use to hold fruit, flannels etc.
Sadly no longer with us - RIP (2018)

Long, long ago when the world was young (and so was I!) we made hills by stacking books, varying in size and thickness, covering them with a few sheets from a decent broadsheet, to reduce the incidence of stepped hill syndrome, and finally throwing a green blanket over the top.

Just a thought.
