Quote from: Orcs on 30 August 2024, 04:38:40 PMTraditionally for those of from that part of the capital "the North" is anything north of Watford Gap services on the M1.

Thus anybody who lives north of this point is a "Northerner".Also anyone from south of the Thames is definitely a bit suspect.

My name is Last Hussar, and I approve of this message. (For those who don't know, the Watford Gap is near Northampton).
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

There's a village in Hampshire called Northington.

Manchester, Liverpool etc, definitely Midlands.

Would that be the Manchester 100 miles north of where you reckon the North starts?
Typical southerner, lost 10 miles outside their own 'manor'.

There is of course the question of which is futher east Liverpool or Edinburgh ?

I are confused.  Is the criteria where you live or where you are from?  I was born Rugby (DEFINITELY Midlands); lived/worked London; retired to Costa Geriatrica on the South Coast.

 This is a pet hate.
Manchester and Liverpool are the midlands.
I would have to drive 100 miles South to get any where near them.   :d

Its where are born otherwise if you retired to Beijing it would make you Chinese.

However by the East Londoners definition you are a Northerner as Rugby is north of Watford Gap services.
According to the East London atlas, "the Midlands" extend from approximately Luton to Daventry, although some would have the southern point of the midlands as Enfield.

I remember saying something like this to a friend back in my teenage years.

His reply was along the lines of,"Being born in a cark park doesn't make you a car, you twonk! It depends on the nationality of your parents."

To be fair his great-grandfather had been a missionary in India, so his grandfather was born in India. His grandfather had been a missionary in Africa, so his father was born in Africa. His father had been a missionary in Nepal, so he was born in Nepal. But he was still a British citizen despite the rather scattered birthplaces of his ancestors.

I get really annoyed by references to Australia as a "western" country. It might make sense if you lived in Argentina, but then Japan would have to qualify too, and Rome would be in the far east.

It's a Western country in terms of culture not geography, I don't see the problem personally.

But there again, when I was at school, Geography as a subject was second only to PE in the list of subjects I loathed. Might have something to do with it.
