I'm on leave this week, gainfully using my time to tidy up a few projects, 'cos I haven't done any serious painting for months.

I've finished my late Romano-British with the final 90 infantry. I'm also finishing off my first early C18 imagi-nation army, the army of the Earl of the Northern Isles. I was pretty focussed on this May to July last year, but there were some few bits to tidy up. I've done the last 2 battalions of infantry, and 2 squadrons of cavalry. On my painting table is the last 2 squadrons and the staff/ADCs.  The Earl of the Northern Isles is a somewhat dour and parsimonious character, and all his troops wear blue (bar the marines who [for some unknown reason] inherited buff coats from the cavalry.)

The Earl's great enemy, the Duke of the Southern Lands is a much more flamboyant, educated, erudite and wealthy character. Originally, I thought his troops could wear green, then in honour of Sir Isaacs work on optics, the Duke could dress his troops in the colours of the spectrum. However, the Duke has nine batallions, which is more than the ROYGBIV. Yellow was popular for a time - but yellow is a horrible colour to paint - black is a possibility, but probably overwhelming, historically not feasible, and not a great contrast to the Earl's dark blue. Mid grey? Possible - but I've just painted a Covenanter army.

Then, like a bolt from the walls of Châlus-Chabrol, it struck me. Reading Duke Speedy's last post, my eye was drawn to the little container of Salmon Rose. Could I do it? An army in pink? Cuffs and small clothes in complementary blues and greens? Natural dark leather belts to be visible over the vibrant rose? The contrast of the bright pink of the Duke to the sombre blue of the Earl ... is this a sensible thing to do?

No, Of course not. I'll stick to green.

Or maybe grey.

fred.

I think a regiment in Salmon Rose would be ok.

There is a slight chance that with small scale figures the difference between faces and coats will blur a bit but for this period with big coats, it will probably be OK. What's the worst that could happen?

The worst is that I end up painting 540 pink coats - and that's just the infantry.

Actually, my problem is that there wont't be enough differentiation between the pink coat and the flesh.

Sorry? A sensible decision? Here?

I am going to have top discuss this horror with the committee!

Duke Speedy of Leighton

Adds to the back story, the regimentap washer woman accidentally left a red sock in with the white uniforms...

Yes.  :-\

I wanted the Duke's army to be fabulous, to contrast with the admittedly dull Earl's bluecoats. Hence, the idea of the rainbow scheme - something that separates them from history as much as anything else. it would be interesting as a visual. Of course, pink (in the UK) was a boys' colour, only becoming linked to the female in the C20.

With 9 infantry units, I can have my cake and eat it. Six being red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple reflecting the Duke's enthusiam fro optics - the remaining 3 being the Guard in their Salmon Rose. The Guard's white uniforms were stained when they were washed with the 1st Battalion's, but the Duke just chortled in delight. His family crest was a fish, for reasons long lost in history, and the Duke, who was as we have said is flamboyant, educated and wealthy, but also is one sabre short of a squadron, saw the colour as reflecting the delicious pink fish he enjoyed eating - and that's not a eupehemism. So the Guards were delighted (and by "delighted" I mean not happy at all) to receive the pink coats.

The Duke hasn't managed to acquire any cuirassiers yet, but they will also wear pink coats. The cavalry have been left out of the Duke's enthusiams so far, so the horse continue to wear green, and the dragoons grey.  Artillerymen also wear grey.

Originally the dragoons and artillery wore white, but somebody confused gunpowder for the soap powder.

Think the Duke should get a new washer service.

News from Eric! The Greens have arrived.

No anti-grav, the Greens rely on tracked vehicles. They also have smaller infantry units, but have uniquely retained snipers.

The mobile artillery has the shorter howitzer barrel, indicating the Mk II.

Aside from evidence of previous inhabitants, Eric also has areas dotted with small craters. Occasionally, these emit a jet of blue flames, which makes the craters less than ideal as places of refuge.
