Which size counter?

Good evening gentlemen.

I've been enquiring with Leon about etching on the MDF bases. What is now delaying my order is 'Which size?'

For those who haven't played For King and Parliament (and I understand 'To the Strongest' is similar) you can activate a unit multiple times, on the basis the activation number you draw is higher than the last activation number that unit had this turn.

While you can do this with dice, the rules preferred is method is playing cards from 1-10. These cards are used for ALL random number generation in the game. I like this idea, because every number you draw subtly changes the odds of future numbers until the end of turn when the cards are shuffled; If you drew a 10, the chances of the next card being 10 are slightly reduced.

However wargaming in 10mm does present a problem - the size of playing cards, as they have to be left on table with the unit (and the mini packs appear to be only available in crackers). There is also the problem of a deck of 80-120 cards; about as stable as Nobby when a new figure line is announced, and about as difficult to shuffle.

I am intending to purchase disks from this August company, and am considering getting Leon to etch the numbers on.

This leads to another choice - what size?

I offer you the choices;

20mm diameter (the size of a penny) or 25mm (the 2p)

The figures are on 30mm square bases. The dots are 100mm squares used as a grid in FK&P.

Might I humbly suggest the Chapbook italic font? Closest modern font I've found to c17th news book typeface. I use it on my Warbases custom casualty markers - each side has its own slogan running around the edge of the marker base. Here's the Covenanters casualty markers (15mm dead men)

I was able to get a set of 6 decks of mini cards (quarter size?) from eBay - dead cheap, they are sold as prizes for kids parties. 

If you go with tokens 20mm should be fine (1p sized)

Radar, how do you find those bases?  I will still get these tokens from Pendraken, as a different thing in game, but I'm after those casualty bases as well.

Miniature card are easily found on Amazon.I have some around 55mm x 40mm and they are fine to shuffle and use.
My biggest complaint is they detract from the figures   

TTS tokens are 20mm diameter, but are aimed at 28/15mm figures. I would go with 15mm tokens, but with the biggest and thickest font that fits, so they can be easily seen.

They are no longer listed as they have dropped them from their catalogue (too labour intensive I'm guessing).

They will still make them if you ask them very nicely, but you do have to assemble them yourself. You will also have to specify the text for the rim of the marker. (They've got all mine on file)

I do fK&P using 2mm blocks, largely because I already had a pile done for Renaissance Principles of War and just rebased them. I use a smaller square than most (70mm) and 40x30mm bases with a unit as a single base.

I designed some tokens to do just as you are doing but went for 15mm square with rounded corners. 15mm is large enough to see clearly and rounded corners stop them catching on the bag when being drawn out.

I also made the mistake of using a fancy font; though most counters only had a suit symbol & a number, some had a letter or two. All that etching really slowed up the laser and I should have used a simpler font (non-serif) and not tried to cram all sorts of extra counters on the sheet. Leon cut them for me but, next time, I would keep it simple to make it work better.

My bases are 30mm square for infantry, and 40mm deep for cavalry. The 20mm diameter (1p size) shouldn't overwhelm.

Having had a look at the number bases, I've come to the conclusion they will be too big, and I need very few numbers, so am going to go with small base, with dry wipe style plastic mounted on, landscape the front half with the figure on.

Have you seen the packs of ready made coloured chits on Simon Miller's Bigredbatshop website? Both mdf and acrylic available. I am an mdf man myself.

Too late, already ordered from Pendraken!
Cheaper,  but I'll have to give a red/blue wash to them- 100 of each.

The decision on wound and ammo markers is 2ps. On top of each is a 25mm thick paper/light card disk. I'll hand write numbers on one edge, littlestrip of sticky back plastic to have wipe off bit,then single figure flocked on rest.
