My Spanish Civil War Project

Some years ago, I started off on a 10mm Spanish Civil War project, I managed to paint up some Italian CTV (pictured here) that I entered into the 2023 Pendraken Painting Competition and had primed some International Brigade to face them. A recent trip to Morocco motivated me to revisit the project, but before I could paint Moroccans, I needed to finish what I already had in my queue. A few weeks ago, I decided to pick up where I left off with those handful of International Brigade figures that were primed an abandoned. I finished them and the rest of the figures needed for a proper game. Here are some pictures:

This represents an infantry company with various attachments and support. I plan to use Fivecore Infantry Command from Nordic Weasel. The figures are all Pendraken of course and the bases are Litko.

I am working on the rest of the Italian CTV now and after that it will be the Moroccans (with additional pictures posted to this thread). Who knows, maybe I will actually paint up some Spanish for the SCW project one day. More pictures and information here: https://lecoqfou.blogspot.com/2026/01/10mm-scw-international-brigade.html

Great job on those. Really looking the part.
Love the building, although I'm sure Alan and Amanda will be doing them up any day now .https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m00275mp/amanda-alans-spanish-job

Excellent work on the unit. It really captures the feel of the period.

In my family there are still memories of Italian road signs along Spanish highways, small but very tangible traces that stayed in the landscape long after the war itself. Details like that always add an extra layer of interest to projects focused on the Spanish Civil War beyond the purely Spanish participants.

Given your clear interest in this "Spanish Civil War without Spaniards" angle, and assuming that Moroccan troops may be next, you might also find the Legión de Voluntarios Blancos a very interesting addition. It is a unit that can be represented without too much difficulty and fits perfectly within that broader international context.

As a side note, there is still an Orthodox church in Madrid, the Iglesia ortodoxa de la Magdalena, which preserves part of its historical documentation. It is a fascinating surviving link to those communities and adds a surprising amount of real-world depth to the idea of including White Russians on the tabletop

Thanks MonAtArms

Italian road signs in Spain makes a change from "That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever England."

I'd not heard of that group of 'volunteers'

Thanks for the link and education MonAtArms, I never knew about that White Russian contingent. My omission of Spanish in the SCW was not intentional. I purchased a few packs of CTV, Nationalists and International Brigade during Covid. I think I skipped the traditional Republican forces out of ignorance more than anything.

My Italian CTV force, initially started in early 2023, is now complete...three years isn't the longest gap between the start of a project and the conclusion but it isn't exactly the shortest either.

Here we have the entire reinforced company: three infantry platoons, three platoon commanders, three light machine gun attachments, a company of three heavy machine guns, two 45mm mortars and four tankettes. These won't all be on the tabletop at the same time. various attachments and support weapons will be provided to the infantry company depending on the scenario.

All figures are from the Pendraken SCW range with the exceptopn of one officer which is from the Pendraken WW1 French range. If you want to see more pictures or learn more about the project, click here for my blog.

Excellent work once again there 8) ! Maybe one day I will make a small CTV force, but with other projects vying for my time, my existing Italians will have to make do.

Spectacular work. The shift in tones immediately caught my attention. I remember reading your explanation about it on your blog and it is a fantastic level of detail. That kind of historical nuance really lifts the whole army even more.

Congratulations, truly impressive work. Please keep going, I definitely want to see more of your projects :) .

Finished my Moroccan Regulares contingent. A little disappointed with how these fellas turned out. I think made them look a bit too irregular and my inking process left them a bit dingy looking.

Exceptional! The regulars look perfect just as "irregular" as they are. It depended on the units and their time in service, but in general they were very, very heterogeneous, even more so as the conflict went on. The images convey this perfectly. Congratulations!
