I'm asking more gamers than historians.

I've been slowly painting ECW over the years. With my acquisition of FK&P, I actually have enough for a game! (Still Miles off for Regiment of Foot.

So here's the question; what coat colour mix would you have?

At the moment I have
8 units red
4 blue
2 white
2 yellow
2 orange

My aim has alway to have over half as red, that way I can do the NMA, and still have some red for the royalists.

I reckon I have enough figures for another 11 battalia. (I've also got enough figures for commanded shot, etc, don't worry about that.

So aim for 16 or 17 red, what mix would you do for the rest? Any more red?
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

KYPD,(alias Radar here) has a pretty comprehensive guide to regimental coat colours if you want a general idea of colours: https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2020/05/coat-colours-part-1-parliamentarian.html

If you were doing Covenanters of course it would be (with a few exceptions in red) which shade of hodden grey?  :)

New Model is of course red, a dark shade

Pierre - I'm not really after a historic mix, more of what proportions do people think I should do red/blue/others.

5/10/95% - does that help?

I think it might be more productive to go down the lists on the links provided by Pierre and do a quick tally of the colours used. That would give you some rough idea of proportions - from my look at them earlier red seems the most common then grey, then blue

Understood LH.

I just thought it might give you a few ideas about the proportion and range of colours used.

Good luck with your ECW project.

Thanks - Had a look; awful lot of 'Red or Blue'....  :'(

I THINK I will have 30 units

10 Red
10 Blue
4 White
6 Other

I think a couple of green coats would not go amiss.

...and cap it all off with one purple.

Thank you all.

Realised I was thinking too rigidly. Going to work towards roughly
10 Red (have 8)(Think I am part way into painting 3 though...)
10 Blue (have 4)
4 White/grey (Have either 0 or 2)
6 Other (have either 6 or 4)(If the 5th and 6th are white, going to go with green)
eventually, maybe.

Not going to worry about NMA at this point.

If I was starting afresh I'd probably go 10 red, 10 blue, 4 grey, 4 white, and the final two (1 colour each) from purple, yellow, green, orange (tawny).

Mix up the blues and reds, with some different shades for some variety

Now if I had my anorak on, the answer would be somewhat different... 😉

(And thanks for the link to my kingdom of anorakness)

Good luck with your project, if you have need of my anorak skillz just ask

Just realised it's converted "8 bracket" to 8)

I just assumed you were particularly pleased with them.
