I'd be inclined to fairly simple basing so as not to distract from the figures

I will probably use some light fine sand but I wasn't sure what size or material to use but now have a plan :)

I use chinchilla dust for the bases of my really small stuff as it has very fine grains.

I can thoroughly recommend Pete Berry's Baccus basing system. Over the last 20years  I have rebased all my 15mm, 10mm and 6mm collections using it, and am entirely satisfied with the results. It is easy to use, and produces consistent results every time. And it also helps the business of another one of the good guys!

Didn't think Baccus single based minis. I thought they were more into battle formations?

Have a look at their website. The BBS set costs about £22, and contains all you need (fine sand, flock, 3 types of paint, PVA glue, and foundation wash)  to base loads of figures. You can use it to base figures en masse, or individually. The concept is simple, but very elegant. If you follow Pendraken Miniatures on Facebook Leon posted pictures last Monday13th  of my 1066 Anglo-Saxons, who are all based using this system. I have based loads of command stands using it, often with only a single figure on them, as well as many individual casualty figures.

Thanks,I'll take a look but it's not really the finish I'm debating  but rather if I go mdf, metal, plastic or something else for the bases

Found a couple of old 10mm figures that should fit in as larger monsters

Fair enough, my misunderstanding! Personally, I tend to go mdf for individual or small numbers of figures. Haven't used plastic for years, found it prone to both warping and becoming brittle.

No worries, I generally use mdf too, with a magnet for 15mm scale or less

Might try something different with 6mm though
