(Frikken) Lasers

I've seen big game companies selling laser pointers.
They would be useful of a couple of my chosen games.
But the offerings to gamers present a couple of problems.

1. The "what does this do" is explained very poorly.

2. I get the impression they're fixed on either dot or line use - needing two gadgets for both.

Now I know the difference between dot and line can be as simple as a lens.
Has anybody found a DIY tool that incorporates a laser at a competitive price?

Not sure if a 'Laser Level' (basically what 'spirit levels' do) is what you are after, they produce a line across a surface, not cheap though, but maybe Black Friday deals at the moment....

Laser pointers are super cheap (£5-£6) often sold as cat toys - I have one of these for gaming, I've not found it that useful, as the times you want to use it are when it's awkward to get down and see, and these are equally the times when its often hard to get the pointer in to position. Whilst it's pretty small (approximately finger sized) this is still quite large compared to a 10mm tank. 

Last night my mate used an Army Painter laser line tool - this was very similar in structure to the laser pointer, but you hold it above the table point it directly downwards , and it paints a line across the table. This is very useful for checking lines in the middle of a table. But looking on Amazon just now I can't see the equivalent of these. But I would agree this looks to just be a different lens on the end of a laser pointer. 

The DIY laser lines are different things again - they are quite chunky, and the one I have needs to be in contact with the surface to paint the line. Handy for putting up shelves - less so for gaming.

The Laser Line tool is from Games Workshop. I got one because, as Fred said, its easier to use than a pointer.

But does just seem to do a line, AP also do a dot style laser pointer.

I have two of them. Also a laser that you put on the table. Work fine but don't need em often.
