I was once shown some really well painted Spanish/Middle Eastern type buildings and I was wondering why they looked so good & the guy who painted them told me his 'secret'.

He said that most gamers paint their buildings too 'clean' - especially around the bottom of the walls.
His theory was that when it rained or if there was a lot of traffic, walking etc around one of the white washed walls, there was mud, dust that splashed up and caked the lower 2 or 3 feet of the walls - so he always applied this to the model before he based it, but made sure it was more brightly painted (more white in the mix) the higher up he went on the walls until they were almost pure white under the eaves. It certainly seemed to add a very good & very realistic impression.
