The weather did indeed cooperate :)

The final batch of the second French army have now been photographed :)

2x Archers, Voulgiers

Bombard, 'Gross varlets', Breton javelin men

Scottish contingent - Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas and his men-at-arms  (mounted and dismounted), Scots archers

There is still a little fogging of some of the labels but this is less noticeable at wargaming distance

And DBA is a small game

I am doing Big Battle DBA with 3 armies a side and 8 armies in total. I'm also doing 2-3 versions of most of the armies :) :-[

The French armies, for example, each have 36 elements to select from to make up a 12 element army

I love the "worn paths" round and into the tents.   :-bd

Those armies are pretty impressive.

I've run into a bit of a brick wall with research for my Free Company army so I'm hoping the forum can assist

The army consists of:

  • 1x General - Mounted or dismounted men at arms
  • 3x French or English - Mounted or dismounted men at arms
  • 2x German or Spanish - Mounted men at arms
  • 3x English archers
  • 2x French brigans
  • 2x Mounted English archers
  • 1x crossbowmen
  • 1x Hungarian horse archers
  • 1x Breton javelinmen

I'm hoping to base the army on the Tard-Venus companies at the battle of Brignais, 6 April 1362.

I can find the names of the commanders of a number of the companies and the banner of John Hawkwood of the White company.

I'm struggling to find the banners of any of the other commanders.

If anyone can point me in the direction of some appropriate banners and liveries it would be much appreciated.

I couldn't find anything (other than Hawkwood whose Italian career is well covered in issue 8. 1) in vols 4-10 of "Medieval Warfare".

I could be very wrong but I think you have chosen an army which wont have liveries since that would imply they were in service to a lord which they were the exact opposite of.   They are mercenaries and demobbed soldiers eking out an existence so unlikely to be members of great families. (who could go home).  So shield heraldry could be personal choice as well although I can see it would be nice to replicate what the originals chose. (if known)

Have you tried contacting the lance and longbow society ?   www.lanceandlongbow.com   If banners are known they probably sell a flagsheet for it!!

Wargames Illustrated 330 p14 had this which might give you a lead if you can find a way to contact the gent concerned.
