Hello

Having come from 1/72 Napoleonics, and realised I could never do what I wanted in that scale, an alternative was needed. The beauty of European metal 20mm meant that I had to find a scale that was not cartoonish, and I baulked at smaller scales.  But 10mm seems to me to be the smallest scale where this is achieved, and some of the sculpting is amazing.

Then seeing Jeff Knudsen's site at War Artisan just did it for me, so here I am, blinking in the sunlight at my new project: 1812 and 1813-14 Napoleonics on hopefully a grand scale.

So I have many questions, which hopefully won't be too annoyingly predictable.  But I am sure my first ones will be!

Whereabouts in Sydney are you. My Sister in Law lives in Manly and we had a very enjoyable holiday over there a while back.

Napoleonics are not really my speciality, but there are several on the forum who will have the answers to many of your more specific questions.  General questions most of us can answer, so ask away.

Hello Orcs

Am on the same Northern side of the Harbour as Manly but not so close to the Sea!

My first general question is about base 'flocking'.  In 1/72 static grass and river sand (with washes & dry brushing) gave good results; no micro flock.  But in this scale what do people do: sponge/tree flock? Granular railway flock? Short static grass? Fine sand? A mixture?  Any pointers would be very welcome!

BTW what would happen if a band of Uruk Hai met an opposing Don Cossack sotnia?

I used to use flock for my 6mm collection so used flock when I upgraded to 10mm. However, I then started using fine sand and short static grass for my 15mm bases - a much better effect in my opinion. So, I've now re-covered my 10mm bases in short static grass and it works very well. As regards your last question, what are Don Cossacks doing in New Zealand?   

p.s. Visited Sydney on holiday once. Stayed in Darling Harbour and had a view of the ANZAC bridge from my 66th floor apartment. Every morning listened to the traffic reports over "Seedney Habar Bridge."

The denizens here are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, albeit sometimes weird and wacky!

99.99% of the time, if something is posted that might be intended to be humorous or to be horrible it's the former.

Thread derailment is such a common occurrence that staying on topic is almost a derailment in itself!

The in-jokes and personal hobby-horses will become apparent in time.

I hope you enjoy whatever time you spend here as much as I do.

As to basing, I use a mix of fine sands, short flock and fine gravel.

The photo below is of 6mm stuff but shows my usual basing style.

As with most things wargaming there are more basing styles than gamers on this forum. It really depends on the look you are after.

If you are happy with your current look post a picture or two and I'm sure someone will have advise on how to achieve a similar look in 10mm, probably several lots of conflicting advise

I use a mix of filler, paint and PVA with flock and clump foliage added as 'shrubbery', so probably not what you are after
