For me, "Ghosts standing ominously on a barrow" look more ominous.   :)

Note also, the barrow entrance should be framed with stones, not wood.

On the ghosts - agreed!

on the barrow ... maybe it's a Wood Elf barrow :)

I, uh, think I might need, uh, more orcs.

Here are the ordinary Copplestone orcs laid out on bases.

Just a bit patchy even on these 6 bases and could 6 bases be remotely enough?

I'm thinking of doing 3 types of orc bases.

  • Snagas/lesser goblins being driven forward by whips

  • Regular orcs in 4 rows with one standard per base.

  • Elite orcs/half orcs/Uruk-hai Copplestone half orc in three ranks with 2 standards per base.

That should make each type of orc unit visually distinct and minimize confusion. Here is a close up of how I'm imagining the snaga bases:

Clubs will obviously be replaced with wire whips and a few gaps will have to be filled with loose orcs but it should work OK, I think.

Need for more orcs might have been slightly exaggerated.

Warg riders with bows, Warg riders, Wargs, orc archers, uruk archers, uruks, uruk spearmen, cave trolls, trolls, oh my!

I think you're probably right !!  ;)

No I don't thinks so. you can never have enough Orcs.

Messing about with base coats and washes for the Army of the Dead so I can hand those guys off to my nephew.

I think that only the Mint Green Base coat made a difference and I don't think silver on the spear tips and shield bosses is an improvement.

I'd second that. I like the minty green ones best.  ;D

I like this idea - simple but very effective.

Thinking of the look shown in the LOTR film, I wonder if they would
benefit from a highlight in light green ?

[Definitely lose the silver - starts to remove the really good ethereal
effect]

I was surprised by the silver.  I expected a bit a a subtle effect but the was slid right off the silver.

L to R:  Pale Olive with wash.  Mint Green mini with drybrush of 1/2 MG 1/2 Ghost White.  1/2 MG 1/2 GW basecoat with watered down wash.  Same with full strength wash.

Not really my thing but I like the third one perhaps with a very light dry brush (same colour as the second one)

This may be getting too complex for the quick simple approach you were looking for but I use the back of a 1" artisits brush to apply very light dry brushes with just one or two downward strokes

Yeah, it has to be simple since I'm going to ask my nephew to do them.
