How NATO actually fights.

An actual NATO run exercise,  with NATO officers running Blue, to work out how to fight.

Little Wars TV start a new campaign series, aimed at beginners I think, using a variant of the free version of "Fistful of TOWS" rules they've called "Fistful of T-34s".

Support for the series is here. Download the rules and paper counters to get you started.

As I am currently looping back towards an interest in WW2 this is of interest to me (although I was looking at using Blitzkrieg Commander - will try Fistful of T34s first though, it's only 4 pages of rules!).

Sounds interesting

I'm confused by what 'battalion scale' means

The link states one stand = one platoon, which is good. I know what that means. Therefore an infantry battalion will typically be 9-15 stands strong. Armoured ones a little smaller. All depends on nationality and year, but in broad terms.

So in a battalion scale game do you field one battalion- which seems not very many models on the table. Or several battalions (much more interesting to me).

And I know people stretch rules to play with lots of models. But this tends to require a lot of patience!

Ok, managed to open the linked files on my laptop.

Looking at some of the scenarios they range from 1 battalion or so a side up to this

#4 THE MAELSTROM
GERMAN: x9 Panzergrenadiers, x1 HMG, x1 Mortar, x7 Sdkfz halftrack, x2 Pz.II,
x15 Pz.III; x2 Pz.IVE, x3 Pz.IVF2
RUSSIAN: x21 Rifle infantry, x4 HMG, x5 45mm AT guns, x1 76mm gun, x1 BA10
car, x8 T-70, x23 T-34, x5 Horse limbers, x21 Trucks

Which is about 3 battalions of germans vs about 6 of Soviets!

Which sounds good so will investigate further.

I still have no idea what battalion scale means. I'd be describing this as Brigade or Regimental scale - and I suspect those Soviet forces are getting towards a Division (accepting they were smaller than western ones)

I always find the "Military Unit - Scale" description confusing.

It wouldn't require much effort to be clearer.

Manoeuvre Platoons, command a Battalion.
or
Manoeuvre Battalions, command a Division.

Sorry, no idea what battalion scale may be.

There's a breakdown of the units to be used in the scenarios they're playing in the 'counters' pdf.

The largest is 40 German vs. 89 Soviet. Other than that, the Germans range from 27 to 39 units, the Soviets 34 to 47.

Game 'units' will be groups of stands that operate together, usually companies but battalions for the Soviets.

The complete Fistful of Tows seems quite an involved set of rules. We had some gamers that I know playing a modern game using the rules at the table next to us at our local convention last year.

The complete rulebook is a hefty 300 odd pages, though a lot of that is taken up with army lists for WW2 and modern forces. The game seemed to flow well and looked impressive. They were using 6mm figures in a fairly large scale 1980's scenario...IIRC NATO defenders had a brigade with multiple Warpac regiments attacking.

Thanks all

Yes I managed to find some details of the scenarios which gives a good idea of game scale - which sounds the size I'd like to play.

Will probably give the free rules a spin. Not quite sure when though

Old film about painting. Bloke has a really large scale model Spitfire to work on.
