From riches to rags

I got home last week to a brown envelope with a nice surprise for once. A generous tax rebate.

Problem 1. SWMBO was standing next to me when I opened it

Problem 2. Since convincing SWMBO that I might be able to treat myself and her agreeing:

a) Our mattress developed a sudden spring problem
b) The microwave has given up the ghost along with the toaster
c) one of the kids left an iron on whilst ironing their jeans on the carpet floor and it burnt through the carpet and destroyed the iron
d) The boiler packed up along with two radiators which blew
e) the house alarm system has suddenly stopped working

The tax rebate has been gobbled up and I'm now scheduling sh*t loads of overtime to pay for the rest.

So I cheered up and sure enough, things got worse

Look on the bright side Nosher, without the rebate things would be even bleaker!

We had a similar ironing problem and managed to claim for a new carpet on the Contents Insurance. Possibility?

I was thinking definitely the same thing re c)
Even possibly the radiators with d)

That's a real shame Nosher.

I would try the House insurance for the carpet.  Hope said child is suitably penitent.

Radiators are a real pain to get rid of when you do get new ones.   I left mine outside for a week hoping someone (gypsies) would take them for scrap.  I ended up getting a skip. If you know any plumbers ask them if they have any old ones. They now have to pay to dispose of them, so iot would be cheaper to dispose of a couple of old but working ones your way

My mother in law dropped the iron onto the cheap nylon carpet we had while waiting to afford something better.  It left a perfect melted print of the iron - you could see teh steam holes.  She was quite upset, and felt guilty.  I just went "We usually just hoover it."
