Fresh convert

Hi all,

I'm a long time wargamer (gaming since 1988), and I've spent a lot of my wargaming years trapped in 28mm scale. I've always liked the look of 6mm and 10mm scale armies and recently have been scouting for a new ruleset to play. Judging from the things said on this forum, Warband seems to be pretty popular so I bought a copy of it to try out. I've not bought any minis yet because I wanted to read the rules to ascertain what troops would be best as a core force (well two core forces, as wargamers are few and far between in my area, so I'm going to need have two armies so that those less committed than me can come round and play).

The Pendraken minis look nice and seem pretty reasonably priced. Eventually I plan to get some pictures and battle reports up - although there's a high chance that my warband armies will stay sat on the shelf having never seen a battle, just like my epic armies, if I can't find people to play with.

So anyway, this is me saying hi, and also if anyone has any tips for core armies to start with, I'm all ears. Im very much of the old school british era of wargaming - I don't care who wins or who loses, I care about having a good time and a battle I can sing songs about for years to come! I like unpredictable forces the most.

Welcome 2Karl, I really enjoy Warband so I can tell you that you will have lots of fun with the game so start telling your friends about it now. As for Armies, I would go with your favourite two from the 12 in the book. An easy start is two army packs from pendraken but only a few of the armies have been re-packaged as Warband so far.

Haven't dipped in to Warband yet myself, my opponents are still dyed-in-the-wool Warmaster afficionados , so can't help with planning armies, sorry.

Might be worth mentioning where you are in case someone else here is sitting just down the road, thinking the same?

Welcome to the forum 2Karl.

I'm a convert to 10mm meself, and will never go back. The Pendraken figures are excellent, and you'll find Leon and the gang very helpful. I too like unpredicatable forces. My Vikings came ashore in LVTP7s. My Republican Romans have Centurions ... Mk IIIs mostly.

A tip though, don't mention Burnt Sienna. It's a long story, but whenever Leon hears B___ S___ he gets a bit agitated. It goes back to his childhood and an unfortunate art class after which ... well children are cruel. It became a nickname which followed him right until he completed his A-level. The forum is such a close knit group that we kind of get a bit prickly when we hear/read B__S__, so it tends not to come up too much now. Though you have to be careful because B__ S__ gets posted unintentionally. Mea culpa, I often post B__S__, I don't mean to, but I've often pressed "send" before I  know it. The moderators are very good at spotting B_S_ and gently act upon it.

Ah! I suspect I may have been typing BS again.

Easily done.  They're the gateway drug to proper figures!  I've still not shaken my 28mm habit but its getting be...no...no...its not getting better.

Without doubt, the best core force troops are the ones you buy.   
If its two armies you need, I believe Pendraken do some sort of deal?  Goblins and Hill dwarves are a matched pair I think.

Yep, they're top stuff...and you won't quite believe how much lead will thump onto your doormat when the package arrives...

That, my friend, is unacceptable!  Time to lift up a few rocks.  There's usually a bleary-eyed wargaming under there somewhere.

You'll find that in Warband:

1.  The armies are pretty balanced
2.  Each army list has lots of options within it, and even more with the allies rule giving you access to core units from other armies.

So...without being difficult, its really a case of picking an army you like and going for it.  You won't find, unlike other rulesets, that there's a 'dogmeat' army or a 'killer' army, so it really will come down to what you like. 
I think a lot of people are making their choices based on Pendraken's release schedule () for the updated figures.  Goblins and hill dwarves are done.  Barbarians (drool) are up next and undead after that I think.

For those armies already updated, the army pack is a great way to start as it gives you most of what you'll need for your army core.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, it's heartwarming to know that there is at least some small corner of the Internet where new and interesting people can be found. Regarding my location, I'm in Rugby, Warwickshire. I'm free to travel, so if there's anyone in the surrounding environs who might be interested in showing me the ropes on Warband, I'd be appreciative.

One of you said I should tell all my friends about Warband... well I don't have that many friends who are into that sort of thing, but I do have a lot of students. They're all slaves to the dark gods of GW right now, and I don't think any of them are aware of anything other than 28mm, so maybe I'll try and sort out some games at the games club after school.

Anyway, Thanks for the swift dispatch of the rulebook, I'm looking forward to reading through it and planning my armies (as a completionist, I just HAVE to have all of them, you see...)

I'm guessing from your post that you're a teacher then?  Is the games club well attended and do they play more wargames or card/RPG/board games?

It varies. Sometimes there'll be lots, other times not so many. It's mostly CCGs and board games, although last week I introduced one lad to the wonders of 2nd Edition 40k - "That was the best 40K game I've ever had, Sir!" Damn right it was, becasue it was the rEAL rules. But I digress.

If Warband is something that can scale down to be played in 2 hours or less on a 4'x4' table then I imagine it going down reasonably well with a few of them

I don't know how well it would play on a 4 foot square with the suggested 100x50mm bases size. You might find that you need smaller unit bases perhaps. I'm tempted to scale things right down and try 40mm base widths which I think means a playing area of 720x480mm (around 30x20 inches?)
