Title: Dismounted cavalry 1914
Post by: J.S. on 24 January 2013, 11:31:52 AM
So, here's another one for the first world war. How about dismounted troopers? For many scenarios those would be fairly important.
Here are some pics to qicken the appetite  8)

Austrian hussars storming a russian position:

Battle of Haelen 1914; dismounted belgian troopers fend off several fierce attacks by german Uhlans:

and now for the best part: it would be fairly easy for pendraken to do these poses since you already got those:

Some headswaps, boots and minor details on the uniform..and there you go, a new ww1 cavalry troopers is born  :D

Are you Austrian? I note that you give them a capital letter, whereas three other European nations don't qualify.

No, I'm german and I only wrote austrian with a capital A here, because it stood at the beginning of the sentence.  ;)

It's fascinating, however. Like the way that the later Ming Chinese responded to the usual threat on their northern frontiers by orering that the word for "barbarian" should always be written as small as possible in official documents to show contempt.

Even though German uses capitals so lavishly?

Capitals aside, some more dismounted cavalry is a good idea. There are the Brits (BP41) but some more would be useful. Horse-holding types could be included as well.

Indeed it does, but it's not always correct. I handed in a paper once, in which I (unintentionally) wrote 'bavarian' (adjective) with a capital B each time..the professor (not a native bavarian) wasn't too pleased.  [-(

QuoteHorse-holding types could be included as well.

I think that the union horse-holders would also be a good sarting point here.

Who would have thought that a request for dismounted cavalry would lead to a discussion of the capitals of Europe! Dismounted Russian cavalry are easy - use an infantryman. However dismounted Austrian hussars and dragoons would definitely look quite arresting on the tabletop.

If you use dismounted cavalry you would also probably need horse-holders.

Seconding (or thirding or tenthing) this!

Some rulesets need to have both mounted and dismounted cavalry, the option of both is very wecome!

I'm always far more worried than bothered.

If I don't have something to worry about, I always think "What have I forgotten to worry about ?"  X_X

(Oh....You mean I bother everyone.) :-\

Thanks for the pointer. That might work nicely for me.

Seems to me this needs to be pushed as FK derailed an important request immediately it was posted. My preferred area of ops for WWI is Europe 1914 where many scenarios would require dismounted cavalry. Dismounted horseholders look good, but a mounted base left on table would suffice. Great to see that Britain,Germany and France have been tackled, Russian infantry without backpacks make an excellent proxy, but Austria and Belgium definitely need something. For Belgium a dismounted figure wearing an Isabelina cap would look great, and could be painted up as any type of Belgian cavalry. Dismounted German Uhlans would make a good temporary fix for both Austrian and Belgian cavalry, although the Belgian uhlans discarded their schapkas in August 1914 as it made them look too much like Germans.

You're certainly right!
The US dismounted cavalry from the ACW range in shell jackets would be a good start for many nationalities though the longer style tunics would be needed as well. Boots would be a requirement as well as different headgear. That would still amount to quite a few new figures especially when you include dismounted horseholders (although I use mounted figures for horseholders). oh... and let's not forget dismounted command while we're at it.
Still; a very good suggestion!

Cheers,
Rob

Sorry to resurrect this thread from the dead, but will you be adding more dismounted cavalry to the list? Austria-Hungary could do with some, please! :)

No plans at the moment I'm afraid, I need to clear up some of the backlog here before we can start looking at new sculpts/ranges.
