Title: BIG NEWS! Please read!
Post by: Leon on 25 March 2012, 04:05:05 AM
Pendraken are moving!

After 20 years of carefully growing the business, we have finally managed to get to the point where we have outgrown the garage/extension/utility room/spare bedroom (!), and we need a proper space of our own.  We've been looking at industrial units since the start of the year, and have had a few viewings, but last week we found one which looked promising.  So, after a bit of haggling and a bit of paperwork, we will officially be making the big jump on April 2nd!

It's been a long road to get here, and we're all pretty excited at Pendraken HQ.  The past few years have seen a huge amount of growth for us, and for 10mm in general, and we'd like to thank everyone who has supported us thus far.  Hopefully the move to our own premises will allow us to improve things in several areas, so even more shiny goodies and quicker order despatch for our customers, and more space and a more efficient workplace for us.

The new unit will also mean that we can welcome visitors a lot easier than we can at Pendraken HQ, so we'd also like to extend an invitation to everyone to come and visit if you're ever in the area.  Just give us a ring to let us know when you're thinking of popping in, and we'll get the kettle on!  We could even cast up something for you while you wait!

I grabbed some pics of the unit when we were viewing it, and it's a big old space!

There's also room for a mezzanine floor if we need more space in the future.

And my new office!

As a consequence of the move though, there may be some delay to things while we get everything sorted in our new space.  The unit is only a couple of miles down the road, so it's not too far away fortunately, and we should be able to get everything done in around a week.  The plan at the moment is that we're getting the keys on Mon 2nd April, so the Monday and Tuesday will be spent fitting the workbenches and partitions, and then Wed/Thurs will be moving all the machines/moulds/etc down there.  Friday is my runover day in case anything gets delayed, or something comes up which we haven't anticipated.  I'd also expect it to take us a couple of weeks to get used to our new workspace, but we'll be working 7 days a week to make sure everything is done as smoothly as possible.

The website will remain open for business as usual, but if you are planning on placing an order in the next couple of weeks, please be aware that there may be a delay.

Price Increase  :(

The downside to the unit of course, is that our overheads are going to increase quite substantially.  On top of the other increases we've seen over the past 18 months, from metal, petrol, utilities, show stands, etc. it unfortunately means that we are going to have to put our prices up.  We don't enjoy doing this (not least because it requires a lot of work), but it's something which has to be done to allow us to continue growing as a business.  We're really proud of our fantastic customer base, so I hope that people still see us as great value for money.

The planned price increase will take the pack prices from:

£3.50 --> £4.00 (Regular packs)
£2.05 --> £2.35 (Vehicles)
£1.20 --> £1.35 (WWII foot packs)
£1.60 --> £1.80 (Fantasy packs)

The good news is that the price increase won't come into effect until August 1st, so there is a long time for folk to get orders in before the prices go up.  We're hoping this means there won't be a last minute rush in the last week of July, but I have a feeling there will be!  A coincidental benefit of the Aug 1st increase, is that the Pendraken Birthday will be the last show where people can purchase anything off the show stand at the old pricing.  After the Birthday, we'll be pulling everything off the racks and re-pricing it.

Again, I hope everyone sees this as a positive, as the majority of the price increase will be going straight back into making the business even bigger and better.

8)

Postage

Finally, completely unrelated to the move, we are going to be changing the postage pricing very slightly.  The % rates are staying exactly the same, but we need to increase the minimum postage amounts a little, as we're losing out on a lot of the smaller orders.  With Royal Mail increasing their prices as well on April 1st, that loss will be even more.  So, the changes to the minimums will be:

UK - increased to £1.00 minimum.
Europe - increased to £1.50 minimum.
RoW - increased to £2.00 minimum.

These changes will go live on Sat 7th April.  As a counter-balance, we may look at putting a maximum postage charge in place as well, but I'll need to chat with Matt about that first.

Let us know your thoughts on all of the above, your feedback is very important to us and always appreciated.

Nice to know that things are going so well for you guys :). We long out grew our workshop space but the bosses refuse to move us to bigger premises >:(. As for the price increase, it is still very good value for money IMHO.

Woot!

Go Pendraken!

What general area will the new unit be in?  I think i'll need to arrange a visit - maybe a few of us at the club might come down mob-handed.

Not thinking of opening a 'store front' at all?

We're really proud of our fantastic customer base, so I hope that people still see us as great value for money.

In the vast majority of cases, organisations get the customer base they deserve.

I still think that you're very good value and it's a joy to buy from a friendly bunch of people who are passionate about the hobby and serving their customers.

I was given an induction course when I joined my firm in 1985. Me & 3 others were given a tour of all the company's premises, including a small print works. The back wall was plastered in pictures of naked women. Not quite Penthouse in pose, but not far off.

Just entering this building caused a walk-out by the printers - one of the people on the tour was a women, and women were completely verboten from the print works

Mind you, we could all smoke at our desks as well.

How times change.

Not thinking of opening a 'store front' at all?

The unit is down on a small industrial estate near Pendraken HQ, just off the A66.  I've not actually got the postcode for it yet, but should have once we sign the papers next Monday.  If you fancy popping down though, just let me know and I'll give you some directions.

No plans for a store front at this point, it's too expensive to get somewhere with any real footfall, or a better locale.  A small 500 sq/ft shop unit on the edge of Middlesbrough town centre is around £12k rent per annum!   :o  The new unit will be as close to a store front as it can be, with a customer area, some displays, seating and a table.  We can cast orders as people wait as well.

However, prices are my worst enemy (it often prevents me from ordering things I like).

Don't forget that the VAT will still be taken off for US customers, so the new packs will be £3.33 for you (£1.96 vehicles / £1.13 WWII infantry / £1.50 Fantasy).

SO WHAT DATE IS THE UNIT WARMING PARTY!!!!

Dave suggested doing something like that, but with Salute coming up, there's not a really ideal time for it.  We do have the Birthday Bash in a couple of months though, so we could do something then while people are in the area?  Maybe open up the unit after the event or the day after, for people to have a look around?

It warms up surprisingly quickly when you've got three burners and a vulcaniser all going!  It might be a bit chilly in the winter, but we'll have a look at that when it comes to it.

I'm not sure on the exact differences, but even with the 25% rate we lose out on shipping most non-EU orders.  I think it only switches back in our favour when you get into the really big orders, hence the possibility of putting maximums in place.  As an example, I've got a package here for Russia, about £40 worth, 1.6kg, and it's going to cost nearly £20 to send it!   :o

Congrats on being able to take such a big step forward. Hopefully more space will allow you to get more things done.

The photos like almost exactly like an industrial unit I used to manage - but was on the other side of the country so it certainly isn't the same one! The temperature inside is probably the only bad thing, as it tends to be on the extreme side of whatever is happening outside.  A random tip (if you have choice of similar units) try to get one where the roller shutter opens away from the prevailing wind direction.

Prices as others have said the increase isn't huge and is still very competitive. For future increases you may want to consider if some of the older figures can justify a higher price point - though sales will probably give you the answer to this.

No choice on that front unfortunately, but it's within a cul-de-sac of units, so it's not open to the elements much.  If it's anything like the current workshop, it will indeed be red hot in summer and freezing in winter!  There is a back fire exit which we can open for airflow, but we won't be opening the roller door very often.

Most of the older ranges left in the catalogue should be phased out within a year or two tops.  Off the top of my head, the old LoA is already gone, and the Peninsular Fr/Br will both be pulled when the new Brits are done.  Some of the other 19th C ranges will be revamped, like the Crimeans, as will some more of the 20th C. infantry.  We might also look at remodelling some of the vehicles to bring them up to par with the newer ones.

Other than those, I think we're doing alright on that front.  I might consider pulling some of the older Fantasy ranges, but I'd need to figure out replacements for them.

As much as I'd like to say there will be a photo area, at this point I'm not sure.  We'll have to get everything else down there and see if there'd be space first, but I know there won't be room in the office.  That would mean it has to go out in the workshop, and all that dust, talc and general dirt isn't going to do the light units or the lightbox itself any favours...

I might have a think about a mini studio, see what I can knock up.

I hadn't even considered the talc !....Dirt and dust, yup !.....But the talc will just get EVERYWHERE.....Be like taking photos through a soft focus filter after a couple of days....probably just a couple of hours, in truth !
Of course you will  have the 'garage' back, at Chez Pendraken....So you can bring your work home with you ! ;D ;D

Dave can have it, there's not enough room at my house!

I know you've just published new postage rates, but will you be re-evaluating themm following the news that the Royal mail are putting prices up on 30th April?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17522500 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17522500)

We'd been expecting a price rise anyway, so there won't be any changes to the postage other than the increase to the minimums already announced.  We put everything through a franking machine in the office, so we get a slightly better rate than at the Post Office.

Aye Avalon, and all the moaning and carping on by 'the public' on the News channels really got me angry...

I mean 60p!

Good grief.

Personally i have loads of ways to get a leter from Land's End to John O'Groats for less than 60p.

This is clearly Royal Mail profiteering on a grand scale...

[/sarcasm]

>:(

The government (red and blue (and blu/yellow :()) have systematically dismantled the national postal service over the last 20 years.  They hived off all the profitmaking activities (parcel deliveries, counter services, pseudo-banking, benefits payments, GIROs, etc.) to private firms.

All this used to support the loss-making core business postal service.

Then they wonder why the Royal Mail, bereft of the activities that made it largely self-sustaining, now makes massive losses.

When they finally kill off what's left, there won't be a national letter delivery service anymore.  What profit-driven company is going to deliver your letter for 60p?

60p to send a letter is still massively below the actual cost to deliver it.

Even now, some courier services you pay for actually just hand it off to the PO, typically for the 'final mile' (as its known).

Personally i dread the interent seller that uses a courier or private firm.  I'm never in when they deliver so my package is usually left in some depot 30 miles away that i have to go and collect myself (i now refuse - i've paid to have it delivered to me.  No delivery, i insist on my money back...the company can keep its goods).

The PO on the other hand is a 2 minute walk away in the village, meaning i can easily pick it up.

When the government finally destroys our PO, we will all feel its loss...

I couldn't see it becoming the norm for UK orders for quite some time.  We tend to use it for international trade orders, or anything which is over the 2kg cutoff and would normally go by Parcel Force.

I am tempted to use the courier for all our Italian orders as well, as unfortunately their postal service isn't the best, and we get a lot of lost packages over there.  It's a shame, cos we've got a great bunch of customers in Italy.

With the imminent move, will the announcement of the release of Aztecs in Tarletons, originally planned for 1st April [javascript:void(0);] still be going ahead?

What about other April releases, will they still be announced 1st April or are you going to wait until you're settled in?

I'm still undecided on this.  There's a couple more moulds to make for the new Sci-Fi stuff, but I don't think they'd be ready for Sunday unfortunately.  I'll see what we can get done, but the April lot may have to wait an extra week until we're all in.

I'm going for at least 3 years!  There'll be a female presence at this one, so all bets are off.  When I was knocking up the list of things we'll need at the unit, she added a dustpan and brush when I wasn't looking.  I've explained that if she wants them, then she's using them...  :D

QuoteThen they wonder why the Royal Mail, bereft of the activities that made it largely self-sustaining, now makes massive losses.

Something similiar going in America with hospitals.  Investors put together a team of doctors and set up independent offices to strip patients from the profitable units of hospitals and then everyone wonders why hospitals are going broke.  The hospitals need the profitable units to offset the losses from the non-profitable units.  Been going on for at least 10 years now.

Prices are going up everywhere.  So have you considered discounts for seniors or the unemployed or those with emotional disturbances?   Perhaps a triple discount for anyone with the trifecta.  Or maybe a sliding scale of prices with bankers and politicians paying a little higher prices to help sustain the great unwashed masses....    :d

You have to have a soul to play wargames.  That discounts bankers and most politicians.  However if these parasites (accurate definition if you look it up) choose to wargame, i'd have qualms in making them pay extra.

Additionally, if Pendraken are introducing social pricing, as an emotionally disturbed, unemployed pensioner i heartily agree*.   ;) ;D

And I guess Jagger you're presaging where the Tories will be taking the NHS in 10 years...

The address is:

Unit 2D, Vaughan Court
Bolckow Industrial Estate
Middlesbrough
TS6 7BJ

This is on the eastern end of Middlesbrough, but is very easily accessible from the A66, which goes right past the end of our estate.  If anyone would like to pop in for a visit, we're there from 9:15am through 'til 10pm-ish most days, so just give us a bell to let us know you're coming, and we'll get the kettle on!

The area was decimated in the eighties, some areas of Middlesbrough when I left school had over 90% male unemployment. The year I left school was the first year the areas main employers British Steel and ICI did not take on apprentices. Bleak was not the word. I left school in 1983, I was the only kid in my class to get a job after applying for over 150 jobs with enclosing a Stamped Addressed Envelope just to try and get a reply haha.  Even the ICI apprentices were eventually paid off..some coming to our little company.

I worked for an electrical contracting company working in heavy industry... so all those chemicals and British Steel metal dust and other crap in my lungs will probably catch up with me  >:(

Still love coming back and seeing how things have changed.

That's interesting - I came east at seventeen. I didn't want to be an ice-cream seller for six months of the year and unemployed for the rest.  :(

I did some contract work in Tees Dockyard in about 1990 on a Caledonian Macbrayne ship called the Isle of Mull.  I just remember working with some really great people, very skilled and dedicated to shipbuilding.

Origin of your address:

'Henry William Ferdinand Bolckow [Bölckow], MP (8 December 1806 â€" 18 June 1878) was a Victorian industrialist, acknowledged as being one of the founders of modern Middlesbrough.'

Born in Pomerania (no jokes please) Apparently there be a statue to him somewhere in Midb.

Not a lot of people know that. :-bd

Thanks SV !

He's stood in Exchange Place in Middlesbrough. Unfortunately the rather magnificent Royal Exchange was knocked down to make way for a motorway flyover  >:(

Saw there was a new post about a move, and thought "Pendraken are moving AGAIN?" and then realised someone had posted to an old thread.

Then I saw Aart posting and the message in his sig, and felt all sad again. He's still missed. :(
