Title: The Bigger Move - Phase 2 begins!
Post by: Leon on 08 October 2021, 12:31:05 AM
We've been ticking off some smaller little jobs over the past couple of months but we've now started the next big phase of our move!

First up we need to get the shop sorted out and opened, so we've started taking out the dividing wall that originally split the room into separate offices.  This was supposed to be quite an easy task but we've found that the suspended ceiling brackets have been attached to the dividing wall rather than hung from the joists, so we'll need to re-attach all of those before we can remove the wall fully.  In the meantime we can take out the glass, plasterboard and non-supporting timber.

The other priority is in the workshop where we need to get the roof leaks fixed and also install better lighting and some heat into the workshop.  A couple of weeks ago I spent two days up on the roof patching some holes and hopefully fixing the leaks, but sadly it's not quite worked.  There were about a dozen leaks in total and we managed to fix two of the biggest ones, but the others still need some more work to get rid of.  So it'll be back onto the roof again for me!

We've got all of the kit for the new lights and heat arriving in the next week or so as well, before the dark nights hit too hard.

Some of the smaller jobs done include:
- plasterboarding a bit of open roof in our workshop alcove ready for a new LED light to be installed.
- fitting two new doors into the shop room and some push button locks so that we can keep certain areas secure.
- putting a bit of architrave around the laser room doors to tidy it up a bit.

And finally, as some of you may have seen on our social media recently, we have an outside sign!  This'll make it a bit easier for the delivery drivers to find us...

The grass is on the list for next week I think, we need to get it all taken out and cut back the vegetation down the side of the building as well.  The plan is to pull up the weeds/soil/turf and lay some concrete to make the parking area a bit bigger, than put some raised beds/planters near the fence line with some wildflowers in.  Low maintenance, looks good and encourages the insects.

Good Luck with the roof. I try and avoid ladders up to the roof now.

I've just been back up there and finished two more patches this afternoon, plus some rubber paint over some other cracks, so we'll need to wait for some rain to see if I've been successful.

So today we had our delivery of slatwall panels ready for fitting out the shop.  These will cover 3 of the 4 walls, leaving a spare wall for our paints/decals/bases etc that come in and out of the van for the shows.  We should have some space for some games tables in the middle as well...

And I also carried out Attempt 2 at fixing the roof leaks so we'll see if these have worked when we get the next bout of rain!

As soon as we get back from Partizan on Monday we'll get the rest of that dividing wall pulled out and the carpet up, ready for new carpets and slatwall.  The steel for the heater frame in the workshop arrived too so we'll need to get that cut and painted before we assemble it over the casting stations.

Today we got the false ceiling supported and took off the remaining plasterboard on the partition wall.  We should now be able to get the supports out on Wednesday and get the ceiling gap filled in.  We've repositioned a couple of the radiators as well to make space for the slatwall installation.

And we've also had a skip delivered!  A nice big skip, ready to take a lot of junk!

And just to illustrate the kind of electrics we've been dealing with in this place...  It's as if every single company that's occupied this building over the past 70 years has just put their own wiring in on top of what was already there.  We must have pulled out at least a mile or more of cabling so far.

Yep!  We've isolated the supply into the shop lights/sockets so we're OK there.  We'll get the light switch and a set of sockets moved onto the side wall tomorrow and then that'll be done.

Right - silly question - but that's the way my brain works.

Assuming you could strip and clean the copper cables, could you use them to make figures?

What would the properties of copper figures be? Would they take paint? Would they bend easily? Would copper work in the machines?

No practical application, just a mental exercise.

Afraid not, the melting point of copper is something ridiculous, way above the 270C that we set our melting pots.

No, THe melting point of Copper is 1084° compared to lead aroud 327°

What would the properties of copper figures be?

Harder than copper and copper coloured

Would they take paint?

Yes I have used copper wire in conversions

Would they bend easily?

No

Would copper work in the machines?

I doubt  the melting pots could get a high enough temperature
The Rubber molds would burn

I havev now wasted 10 minutes of my employers time answeing your daft questions, .... But that probably makes me dafter than you.

A time-consuming and fiddly job today as we got the timber screwed up and the false ceiling re-attached to it, but it looks a lot better now.  We now need to move the light switch and plug sockets over to the wall and then we can put all of the ceiling tiles back in and fit some white plastic trim over the timber beam to blend it in.

Weather permitting, Friday is going to be spent outside getting all of the weeds/vegetation strimmed and out before winter hits.  There's a load of debris from the initial fitting out that needs to go into the skip as well, so we'll get that sorted out.

A very long time ago (back in my yoof @ college) I made a silver & gold plated Wars of the Roses chess set, as a commission for a client - using 20mm lead figures (possibly Minifigs) I made up rubber moulds that allowed me to cast multiple wax figures up. I then used the lost wax casting technique to cast the silver figures. They needed a lot of conversion and cleaning up, and then had to be carefully hand-polished, so as not to lose all the detail. One 'side' was then gold plated.

The board was made out of ebony and ivory (yes - I know - but back then we worried less about poor old jumbo!) set into a silver grid on a mahogany board. I had a nice polished rosewood box made for it all, with an inlaid silver plaque that was going to be engraved. It was some sort of recognition award, but I never found out for whom.

It was a nice project. I did try to sculpt some of my own 20mm wax figures - based on the Moorcock History of the Runestaff books - I loved the idea of the various insect and animal armoured 'orders of The Dark Empire of Gran Bretan - but my sculpting skills were woefully inadequate. They were too large and lumpy.

Never tried copper - but lost wax is your best bet for higher melting point metals.

Today we were all outside strimming, weeding, clearing and filling the skip!  It was a ton of work but we got most of it done in the end. There's just a bit more strimming to do on the far side of the car park where there's some chunky tree stumps to work on and then we'll get the jet washer on to the front of the building and clean up the brickwork.

The side of the building to the right has been piled high with wood/masonry/junk since we first moved in so it was nice to get this cleared.  The fence line to the left has got a 2ft gap between tarmac and fencing, so we'll shutter that off and fill it with concrete after winter.

(https://flic.kr/p/2mBcEYF)ClearedQuadrant (https://flic.kr/p/2mBcEYF) by Leon Pengilley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156736924@N08/), on Flickr

The car park is a lot tidier for now but there's more to do here.  The strimming needs doing on the far side and then after winter we'll get the grass dug out properly and lay some fresh concrete to extend the parking area a bit.  We're then going to put some raised planters inside the front fence line and plant a load of wildflowers.

I wish I'd taken a 'before' pic of this as it was a complete jungle down here and you could barely walk down it.  Everything's out now and we'll get the jet washer down there to clean the walls and get the moss off the floor.

Work continues and we got a lot of painting and maintenance stuff done last Friday.  Today we got our heating frame up and welded together, ready for a bit of painting and then heaters being installed on Thursday.  This rather odd looking construction will have wiring coming in from the left wall which will power 4 x halogen heaters above the casting stations.  Push button switches will power them up for 1 hour at a time whenever the guys get a bit chilly.  This will be the first time in nearly a decade that the casters have had a proper heating source so they're looking forward to it!

Progress in the shop has been a bit slower than I'd hoped but we got the light switch and sockets resited today, so they'll be behind the counter once that's built.  And Mike got the former partition wall bit of roof trimmed out so that it's nice and neat now.  The far wall needs a bit of plasterboard over the gap, then plaster and paint to finish.  Next to be done in the shop is getting the old carpet up and the new one laid.

And finally something that might be of interest to a lot of you... Last Thursday we travelled down the M1 to pick up nearly 3000 books from a friend of ours.  Around 2500 of these are brand new (the rest 2nd hand) and will be going into our shop once it's ready.  We want to get as much variety in the shop as we can to make it more attractive to a wider market so these will definitely give folks a reason to come and see us!  Once we've got them all unpacked and organised I'll put up a list here for everyone to look at.

Last Thursday we spent all day in the workshop getting the new lights and heaters installed in there, just time for the clocks going back and the dark nights setting in!  The lights are hi-bay LEDs which put out an impressive amount of light and make it much easier for the casting guys to see what they're doing.

(https://flic.kr/p/2mGBMmL)NewLights (https://flic.kr/p/2mGBMmL) by Leon Pengilley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156736924@N08/), on Flickr

The heaters are halogen lamps and are operated by a push-button switch, which powers them up for 1 hour at a time.  We're getting some work done to the roller door to try and make it a bit more insulated and less drafty, so that should help as well.

(https://flic.kr/p/2mGF3of)HeaterSwitch (https://flic.kr/p/2mGF3of) by Leon Pengilley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156736924@N08/), on Flickr

And while we were in the workshop we fitted a new light in the alcove to brighten up that area a bit.

This week we've pulled up the carpets in the old back office, ready for the new ones to arrive next Wednesday.  We'll have to wait until after Salute to get them fitted though!

Today we've finally started fitting the slatwall panels in the shop.  We'll be continuing this tomorrow and should have at least 50% of it done I think.  Again, we'll have to wait until after Salute to finish off the rest of it, as time is at a premium at the moment.  There's going to be a lot of sales-space here so we'll have to see what products we want to fill all of these walls with...

And finally, I'm sure most of you know how busy we tend to be at Pendraken HQ but here's something to help illustrate that a little...  I've always wanted to organise all of our outstanding releases/projects so that I can keep an eye on them and make sure that nothing gets forgotten.  So, presenting the Projects Wall!  There's a few missing that I need to add here but this is all of the major projects that we've got on the go at the moment.  There's the Peninsular Naps, Arab-Israeli range, Castle Arts buildings, Dungeon revamp, Sci-Fi expansion, new flags, more modern vehicles...

Can't see myself getting there anytime soon I'm afraid.

I was talking to a work colleague yesterday who just came back from a visit to the UK as her father is terminally ill over there.

Said she spent 24 days in isolation in UK and NZ, had multiple covid tests (all negative but had to pay for anyway) before she flew out of NZ and the UK and she is double vaxxed with Pzifer. She was lucky to get a MIQ (mananged isolation quarentine) spot here on her return to spend her 14 days in isolation in NZ.

The good old Kiwi OE (Overseas Expedition) tradition of going overseas to "see the world" is not really an option these days, instead people seem to be crossing Cook Striaght and visiting the (mostly) still covid free South Island.

Travelling overseas will never be quite the same.

Even before the UK dropped the traffic light system NZ, like Australia, was a 'green' country which meant that fully vaccinated people entering UK didn't need to quarantine.  My son could visit from Australia without problem, but getting back into Australia would be a nightmare, so we haven't seen him since 2019 and have never seen our grandson.

As soon as the penny has dropped everywhere that we are never going to be free of COVID the better.  Australia seems to be realising this now.  Travelling will eventually return to what it was before, as long as people are fully vaccinated.  It will become the norm to get jabbed and carry vaccination records, and testing certification where necessary, like getting a visa.  It will be routine and hardly a challenge.

It would work perfectly here.  In fact I could say to Mrs Orcs, "I thought about visiting the Pendraken shop, but instead I placed an order for £220, as that's what it would have cost me to visit it.  The only comment I would have got would have been " "And when are you going to paint them?"

I am fortunate that I do not have to justify anything I spend money on.  Just myself, and if its Shiney....... ;)

2 steps forward and 1 step backward...

We've been working hard to keep progressing in the unit and getting the shop ready, but Storm Arwen had other plans and decided to give Pendraken HQ a whack.  A strip of the roof panels have come off completely, leaving the back office completely open to the elements.  Luckily it set the security alarm off so my phone pinged me and I asked Dave to go down and check on it.  Him and Mike managed to use some spare floorboards to patch the gap for now and we've got the insurance people calling me on Tues to get a proper fix sorted out.

The storm has lifted a lot of the other panels on the back half of the unit as well, so we've got loads of leaks coming through into the workshop again.

Quick video of the damaged section:

That's not what you want  :o :o

Good that Dave was able to at least cover the hole with a temporary solution. The many leaks in the roof sound like they may be more of a long term problem, as going to be hard to track them all down and fix them.

That's really unfortunate.  Hope the insurance company is helpful

We had a huge water leak between the meter on the verge and the house - 2500 litres a day. The insurance company were really good. Allowed me to use a company suggested by me as they would use a "moleing" device and not dig up the new drive. They also paid the invoice within 3 days of me emailing it to them.

Sorry to hear this.  I guess my purchase of a few bases and a can of spray paint at Warfare won't help much towards the repair cost. Hope the other customers were less tight fisted.

But your emergency response team were impressive and the whole move has shown that buildings can be fixed.  I can recall being on the roof of our 3 storey block of flats in a storm at 2am when half of the roof access door had gone sailing away into a nearby tree. And trying frantically to secure the remaining bits in place to prevent damage to our water supply tanks. Not something I ever want to repeat.

I've gone up this afternoon and put a tarp over the exposed areas to keep the rain out so we should be close to watertight for the timebeing.  The insurers didn't call today but I'll nudge them tomorrow.

Insurers are massively backlogged - so may take a while to get to you. But if you have stopped the worst of the weather getting in, that at least should stop too much internal damage.

No updates on the roof yet sadly, we've been told we're on an 'urgent call back' 3 times now...  But they have told us that we can get some local quotes for the repairs and then they might just pay the invoice for us, so I'm chasing roofers.

Work in the shop has been slowed a little while we get the Christmas orders sent out but here's a few pics from the last few weeks of work.

The slatwall is all up and we've put the hooks on ready for some goodies!

Over in the far corner the decals and paints will live here when we're not at the shows, and we've put the bookcases together ready for all those books.  That rack on the right hand side is ready for all of the MDF bases to go into those plastic tub/boxes.

And we've put together the Ikea-style shelves that'll form our counter.  There'll be a worktop going on the top and then a large image/hoarding/advert type thing across the front.

I've just realised it's been a while since I updated on our move, so here's the latest pics and news!

We spent a bit of time before/after Christmas doing more electrical work, with plug sockets put inside the shop counter and the laser room fans hard-wired in.

(https://flic.kr/p/2n41enW)CounterPlugs (https://flic.kr/p/2n41enW) by Leon Pengilley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156736924@N08/), on Flickr

We also put some spotlights in the front of the shop where it was a bit dark, and then installed outside lighting at the front of the building, so the car park is well lit now.

(https://flic.kr/p/2n41ekr)Spotlights (https://flic.kr/p/2n41ekr) by Leon Pengilley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156736924@N08/), on Flickr

Two weeks ago we had the carpet fitters in, installing vinyl in the back corridor and then some more carpet in our staff room, which has made it considerably warmer!

Inside the shop the bookshelves are filling up nicely and we've also got some larger shelves for the bottom of the slatwall boards.

(https://flic.kr/p/2n3YzDo)Books (https://flic.kr/p/2n3YzDo) by Leon Pengilley (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156736924@N08/), on Flickr

And this week we started assembling the first of the games tables.  These are IKEA-style units but a bit smaller so that we can get a top/bottom board and castor wheels on, without it all being too tall.  There'll be two of these to start with, and then another 3 or 4 in the games room eventually.

And finally, today we spent a couple of hours outside doing some more repairs on the roof.  We're still waiting for the insurance company to sort this out (almost 3 months now) so they asked us to 'mitigate any further damage' from the storms coming tonight/tomorrow.

Next week we should have some of the shop signage arriving so things will start to look a lot closer to being finished in there.  The stock is slowly building up on the hooks as well, so we should be all ready in time for our opening on March 26th.

There is, but it was going over an old concrete workshop floor, so to be expected.  We'd flattened and filled a lot of it, but it wasn't worth the expense (and mess!) of doing a full floor skim for what's really just an access corridor at the back of the building.

There's quite a few duplicates in there I think, as this was all stock from a book seller on eBay.  We need to organise the stock in the out-building and then we'll see what we've got exactly.  There's definitely some interesting stuff here as the guy wasn't buying from the usual sources.  There's stock from a publisher in the States, as well as some really niche stuff that was translated and published in India.

If you have a barcode scanner then an ISBN search (lots of such services online) might be the way to go?

Seems likely that there may be a phone app that would do it, been a couple of decades since I worked in Libraries and technology has undoubtedly moved on.

Yep, there are phone apps that can do this - probably a good way to start - but if you have some more obscure stuff, it may well not have ISBNs.

With the shop opening imminent, it's probably about time I updated this thread with some new pics!

We've got 2 game tables in the shop, made of white storage units with an MDF top and bottom, plus castor wheels.  The tops are 4x6ft and we can attach multiple tables together to give a larger game space.  We had the 3rd generation of Pendraken helping us with these as well...!

The patio doors at the back of the shop have been replaced with a low threshold set to allow for wheelchair access into the shop.  We've put a nice chequerplate on the internal side as well so that the carpet doesn't get scuffed up with the stock going in/out of the shop.

The shop signage arrived a few weeks back so we've now got header boards for all of the stock racks, plus a really nice image/sign for the front of the counter.

This week we've made a new stock rack to take some of the smaller products (dice, animals).

And after a long shift tonight we're almost there!  Just a few more books to get onto shelves tomorrow, then a load of signs/price labels to put out, and we should be just about ready for opening!

That's my wallet whimpering.

Great showpiece for a superb institution.

Looking great Leon!

A really good shop and gaming space. You should be very proud of how all this has come together.

Looks most excellent! Hope it all goes well for you, and in 30 years time there will be a chain of Pendraken shops across the land . . .

My wallet can whimper all it likes. I am far too far away from Middlesbrough for it to make any difference.

That all looks very nice and thank God I'm too far away to visit, otherwise it could become a regular and expensive occurrence ;)  :D .

I am definitely coming up to you one day. If I can get to the Battleground show, I'll come up a day early and visit.

I know I've been away for a good while and was not aware of your making the move. Very interesting and impressive reading. Shame about the storm damage, but it could have been worse.

One thing did sort of hit me when I first saw the picture, the one with the big black rectangle sitting what seemed ot be the middle of the room - Is Leon trying to do a 2001 Space Odyssey theme??? No, surely not (que the music....)
