As well as delivering some much needed printing to me Pierre the Shy delivered 8 battalia of Irish plus some hangers on that need painting :!!
Pierre the Shy has been very patient while I work on some of my own projects so these are now at the head of my painting queue :-[
The first two battalia are on my painting rods and are awaiting a lull in the current severe gales to get undercoated :-w
Pity we can't control the weather !
There was a lull most of yesterday :)
So the first batch of Irish were undercoated :)
Officers' armour base coated and drybrushed, along with pike heads :) :)
Officers and Drummers' coated base coated and dry brushed :) :)
Troops coats base coated and dry brushed :) :)
Everyone's trousers done :)

Belts & scabbards done :)
Plumes, drums & sashes done :)
Boots & shoes done :)
Skin base coat done :)
Three of five hair colours done :) :!!
Finished remaining hair colours & highlighted skin :) :)
These extra units were originally meant to be for a Benburb refight, but I've come across some good information about the battle of Knocknanuss in 1647 as well in the course of researching Benburb, so looking at restaging that as well as I have most of the units needed once Paul finishes these Irish for me....Knocknanuss is a bit special for me as its the last battle to feature the "Redshanks" highlander types under the command of Major General Sir Alasdair Mac Colla, who was, during the 1644/45 Scottish campaign, Montrose's chief lieutenant.
He died in somewhat contraversial circumstances at the end of the battle at Knocknanuss.
Still certainly shows that this period of British history should be called the War of the Three Kingdoms rather than the English Civil War, there's so much more to it than just Edgehill to Naseby!
Good point, but I suspect several would have been confused if this was a WTK Irish thread ;)
Touch ups done :)
Washed :)

Final dry brush done :)
Figure bases done :)
First of four batches completed :)

I have to collect the first batch from Paul at some stage and then base them up first.....so might be a while, though I've got all the labels, bases and flags ready for all 8 regiments.
I'm sure they'll be worth the wait though :)
Next batch undercoated before a planned late start in the office today :)
Well......Your daylight hours are getting longer, now, Paul !
Here.....Almost depressing.... getting up in the dark, and having to switch the outside light on, before the dogs go out for their morning 'bimble'.
(Fair enough...I DO get up at stupid o'clock !) ;)
Cheers - Phil. :)
Clocks - in WALES !!
And YOU haven't got a sundial, I suppose ?
(Tends not to work too often though. ;))
No, no, no.....Because of the REALLY awful weather in other parts of the world...forest fires..hurricanes..floods....I'm trying NOT to moan about the weather.)
Cheers - Phil. :)

Na we use a water clock !
It's dark when I go to sleep and light when I get up most of the year .... rest of the year it's light going to bed and getting up.
To be fair, not everyone has the luxury of going to bed between two and four in the morning and getting up between ten and midday.
Helmets, armour, pike heads base coated and dry brushed :) :)
Coats base coated :)
Coats dry brushed :)
Trousers done :)
First two regiments based up - Lord Blayney's and Lord Clanboye's Anglo-Irish pike and shot regiments were part of Monro's combined Scots/Anglo-Irish force at Benburb.
Just need to finish flocking the bases and colour the edges of the flags.
Supposed to be good here for the next few days so I will try and take a few pics once the units are completed.
That was quick work :)

Spare match!? Holy St. Barbara, I'm lucky to see the musket. :o :-bd :)
;D ;D ;D
I may have misinterpreted what it is but some of the muskteer figures have what I'm painting as a bundle of spare match hanging from their belts at their right hip
I suppose some pictures to help illustrate the figures in question would be useful?
Oh OK then :)
The first two Anglo-Irish Regiments for Benburb - Lord Claneboye's and Lord Blayney's Regiments of Foot. In FK&P terms these are shot heavy musket and pike battalia counting as seasoned (average) units for morale purposes:

Yes not too bad ;)
My cellphone camera seems to really highlight the flock for some reason.....and my little Epson inkjet decided to print what started out as red labels as more of a red brown hue but I have lived with that since the start of our various W3K projects so no harm done.
The extra ships arrived for the Malay Barrier campaign so I will give you lot on Saturday.....the Indy is there this time!
Multiple thumbs up guys! Great looking units!
Extra match seems as reasonable as anything else and adds even more layering detail.
Love the colour palette, btw.
:) :) :)
Pierre the Shy wanted them muted and rustic apart from the officers
Finished painting the current batch :)
Touch ups and hopefully a wash tomorrow :!!
Very 'period'... great work!
Cracking work ! :-bd

I'll move them off the painting rods late tomorrow once they are fully dry and hopefully get the next batch undercoated :-w :!!
Paul...
Just bog off..... ;)
YOUR daylight hours are stretching out.

Got the next two Anglo-Irish units from Paul last night - these will be Lord Montgomery of Ard's and Sir James Montgomery's regiments of foot.
Looking like 2022 will be busy in terms of FK&P games so these boys should see a bit of action next year.

I must admit to being spurred on by the realisation that we have already passed the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbour :o
I need to paint a number of ships for our up coming ABDA naval campaign that starts on 16 December :!! :!!
Washed before heading off to work yesterday morning :)
Final dry brush and figure bases done last night :)

at what turned out to be our last game of the year :o
Unfortunately next week our host and one of the regular players are both unavailable due to seasonal commitments (parties) :(
The following Saturday is apparently not available for wargaming either, something about there being other commitments on 25 December :-w
QuoteThe following Saturday is apparently not available for wargaming either, something about there being other commitments on 25 December :-w
Yes, apparently it's some really old geezer's birthday so there's a massive party planned. :)
So now I have 4 Irish regiments to base up and two more to collect when they are done.....At least it will be a good lead into 2022 as looking at getting quite involved with the "celtic fringe" of the War of the Three Kingdoms next year.
These boys will get a bit of table time in 2022, though as usual I have too many other things on the go as well, both gaming and real life wise.
The last 2 battalia are on my painting rods :)
Went to undercoat them, knowing I was low on undercoat :-SS
Ran out on the first side of four rods ~X(
Hopefully the model shop in Christchurch I contacted yesterday has some in stock and can courier it to me :-SS
There doesn't seem to be any in stock in Wellington :(
The model shop in Christchurch hasn't contacted me :(
There are some grey Army Painter sprays available 58km (36 miles) away but they are a significantly darker grey :-\
I needed to get a replacement windscreen wiper blade yesterday so while there I grabbed a 'cheap' spray can of primer that turned out to be enamel
I sprayed a spare figure yesterday and will be base coating it with Deck Tan and Golden Yellow to see what the coverage is like
Any observations on using non-model enamel spray undercoats?
I base coated the spare test figure yesterday and the coverage and over all look is good :) :)
I tried rubbing the paint off to test adhesion and it shows no sign of wear :)
So I've taken the plunge and undercoated Pierre the Shy's last two Irish battalia :-SS
I'm sure they'll paint up as well as usual and not having anything to paint while on holiday was starting to frustrate me

At the risk of restarting the molded pike v open hand pike debate I will report finally being able to complete gluing the last pikes (actually 30mm pins with heads removed) to the last 20 open hand pike figures that I have to do prior to handing over for painting.
Judging by the amount of adhesive on my hands and several (if not more!) naughty words spoken when trying to remove said pike figures from my fingers I'll stick to the molded pikes next time (if there is one) ;)
I'll get those figures off you on Saturday BEFORE the Japanese aircraft arrive ;) ;D

More pictures? probably a while away as the Irish Confrederates still need to be flocked and have their flags added (Bill sent me more information about them so I need to update them first). I haven't opened the last stuff I got back yet and we are once again off to defend the East Indies this weekend, if ex-cyclone DOVI doesn't arrive sooner than expected.
Meanwhile I have it on good authority that the further re-inforcements have safely arrived "in country", which should allow various projects to be advanced somewhat at least.

Based up the various batches of figures I got back from Paul recently (a total of around 50 pike and 30 shot) onto 40mm X 30mm sabot bases.
With a couple of spare command figures I have been able to make a dedicated third unit (MacDonnell's) to be able to field the whole of Montrose's Irish Brigade as Commanded Shot (as required for some of his bigger battles like Kilsyth).
The rest are fillers for existing units, mainly to turn "ordinary" pike and shot Batillia into Early ECW Irish pike heavy/all pike units by simply removing the two shot sleeve sabots and replacing them with pike armed sabots.
Now onto several regiments of "rabble" and the dedicated Irish Horse and Commanders to finish off this project.

Mainly for use in early Irish battles but will also be useful for other games where ill-armed and organised units are required such as Napier's reseve at Alford (mainly camp followers etc) and Carbisdale where Montrose's "army" was mainly composed of drafted farm labourers from the Orkneys.
just need to add flock and generic labels to complete them now. Since they are stictly generic units no standards or flags carried by them.

Due to other matters arising I have only managed to flock two of the rabble bases (no starwars jokes please ;) ) so far, but should get the rest done over Easter. The stuff for some generic ECW (and later period) camps has also arrived (only 5 1/2 days after leaving Middlesbourgh!! :o ) so started by washing all the resin tents. The metal bell tents (ZC 11) are quite weighty but are compatible with the resin ones.
Going to base them in various multiples so as to give a slightly more irregular look, as they would not be pitched in perfect lines like a later C18-20 regular military encampment.

I did finish making up the camp bases, but too windy to spray primer on them today......going to paint all the tents on the base rather than paint first then base them all. Tomorrow looks a better day for it.

A little distracted by some naval secanrios I'm working on for later this year :-$
Finished painting the 10 camp bases. Made them generic (i.e. no actual figures on the bases themselves) so I can use them for different periods as required e.g. the bell tents would just as easily fit in with my 1914 stuff as with the ECW stuff I'm doing currently.
Monday is ANZAC day so my mission after going to the dawn parade is going to be flocking the camps and the remaining Irish units. Before I get back the last stuff from Paul.
Other ranks coats base coated and half dry brushed :) :)

5 units of Irish "Rabble" for FK&P - supposed to represent a mixture of native Irish and Anglo-Irish peasentry from early years of the War of the Three Kingdoms (1641 - 1643). Later both sides would field better equipped musket and pike armed infantry and sword and pistol equipped cavalry units. These units are also generic enough to use as poorly trained and equipped units in Scotland (e.g. Montrose's reserve at Alford and the bulk of his army at Carbisdale in 1650):

Based up 8 command stands for the Irish Confederation and Anglo-Irish forces.....have to magic up some more bases from card for the two "extra" cavalry regiments before I can base them as Paul kindly offered me some spare figures he had lying around.
Included some mounted command figures from the slightly later AoR range as Clib's figures are so dynamic.
That was quick :o
Finished flocking and labelling 8 Irish command stands, having worked out who they actually are for the main scenarioes that I got them for (Benburb/Knocknanuss/Dungan's Hill) ;)
Its Queens Birthday here today and I earnt my brownie points doing the garden yesterday so on to (carefully) cutting out bases today for the "extra" regiments and painting thatch and slate roofs.
A bit of thread necromancy here.....
Having sat on my shelf for 16 months I finally based and flocked 24 stands (8 regiments) of ECW style Irish horse and 5 additional stands of "transitionally" armed native Irish cavalry with light lance/spears.
I originally put them aside to finish once I got some more of our FK&P template bases from Leon, but I have forgotten to inculde the 4 extra bases needed in the last couple of orders I have got from Pendraken...opps :-[
Oh well, just have to add them to the next one instead ;)
In the meantime I have now got 4 x 2mm card thick ones cut out for them. O:-)
