The Pendraken Painting Competition is back! After a couple of years off we thought that this is exactly what we all need during these strange times. Something to focus on while we're stuck in lockdowns, something to get that lead mountain whittled down, and somewhere to show off all of those figures you've been painting over the past 12 months! The
2021 Pendraken Painting Competition will open to entries on
February 1st and will be running all the way through until the end of the month. The previous competitions were always a fantastic showcase for 10mm so we can't wait to see what you've got to offer this year.
Closing date for the competition will be midnight on Sunday 28th February and we'll then open up the voting threads for everyone to decide our winners.
The categories will be the same as previously:
Categories:Foot - Pre-20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Foot - 20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Mounted - Max: 20 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Vehicle - Min: 1 / Max: 3 vehicles on or off bases.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm. This could be a command base, a single figure, artillery base, etc.
Open - Army - Anything which is larger than the maximums in the other categories, so multiple units or a whole army.
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules - Please Read!- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
1. You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome! We're hoping to have the manual registration opened up again in time for the competition, but please let us know if you'd like to join in advance.
2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below). We do not allow montage images anymore, just to keep a level playing field. You can however edit your two images into a single file for the sake of uploading/hosting them. The best way to add your images is through a separate photo hosting site, or a blog, but if you have any difficulty posting pics then let us know and we'll help you out.
3. The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo!
4. All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
5. Entries should have been completed in the last 12 months, so we hope you've all been busy!
6. You can post WIP (work-in-progress) photos if you wish, but please create a new thread for these. You can also post extra photos of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
7. The winners will be decided by the Forum members, so once the closing deadline has passed, we'll put up a poll thread for each category where our members can vote on who they want to win. The polls will close 7 days later and the winners will be announced.
8. Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
9. Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics. Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used. And now the good bit, the prizes! The winners and runners-up in each category will now receive the following:
- The Winner of each category will receive £40 worth of Pendraken/Minibits credit!
- The Runner-Up of each category will receive £20 worth of Pendraken/Minibits credit! We've also got some bonus prizes for each category, donated by some of the excellent companies in the industry:

And that should be it, if there's any questions, let us know!
:-bd
Excellent news.
Do I enter any of the 4700 figures painted in the last 12 months, or do my usual trick and only enter figures painted in the competition month?
You know the answer, as I can order something new/different? ;)

a 10mm Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group all sitting around reading poetry and steamy novels drinking tea?
40 figures. :-\
That lets the full majesty of my Napoleonic battalions out of the running - and please don't suggest I only use 40 figures in the entry - that would be like having Ant without Dec ... or only half of something good.
Perfidy! I was so sure I'd win as well. :^o

Not missed much, not quite as bad as D.H. Lawrence or Charlie Boy, but.....
I better get the Zulus and British I have undercoated started then.... (after all only owned them for about 7 years or so)

One of the attractions of Zulus is that they paint up fast. The other is that they're a pretty good army.

oooh! now that's an idea! I may very well paint some TB Line. Have not participated in any of the comps for many years now but if I can swing the time and painting enthusiasm I may very well chip in this year. Given all that has happened with Covid etc. it feels almost like a community project/thing.

A canoe is an early boat, a boat moves people from one place to another, so the Vehicle category?! Or you could try it in the Open catagory instead.

Again, vehicle-ish or the Open category.
I have not painted anything for a year now, so this is a good reason to kickstart my mojo with codex Mendoza in one hand and some aztecs in another. Maybe brush needs to go somewhere too.
Pre 20th foot it is. 32 figs.
Cheers

Can we use scenery, terrain, or backdrops in our photos? Or is the preference for a solid backdrop to showcase the figures?
-Jim
I would have thought so, Jim.....In previous years folk have used backdrops and terrain...But I'd wait for Sir to confirm. ;)
And as that was your first post...A very warm welcome to the forum. :-h

Hi JIm

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. You made me feel good today. :)
The competition threads are now up so let's see what you've got! Good luck everyone!
Hello and welcome Jim! :D
Ok, having a senior moment (not been active on any forums for a long time).
How do I upload photos to forum threads.
Simple step by step would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

If you've got the images hosted elsewhere (Flickr/Photobucket/Imgur/blog, etc) then you need the url (address) of the image and you can post it here. Click the image icon while typing your message and you'll get a pair of image brackets that look like this: [ img ] [ /img ] You need to put your image address in between those sets of brackets.
Alternatively if the image is small (128kb) you can upload it directly to your message by clicking the 'Additional Options' under the white box in your reply, and then attaching the image files.
Welcome to the forum, Jon.
Cheers - Phil. :)

Welcome! There's a guide here on how to upload using a photo-sharing site called Imgur:
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,20026.0.html
Though if you have images held elsewhere as Leon mentioned, the process is much the same, you can skip the Imgur bit and just look at how to display them to the forum.
Welcome on board Jon :).

Hi Andy! Great to see you. Hope you're okay?
Hello Leon,
I am in! I'll try to warm up some of my gaming friends to participate, it is always a fun event.
Greetings,
Michel.
May have improved the crew morale, but it was the year of the Rabbit, not Tiger so one suspects the Chinese thought it was silly.

Not sure on that then! You could try it in the Army category but that's not quite right, or see how many of the 7 bases you can squeeze into 100mm square?! Infantry Pre-20th C maybe?

Total pleb question here but trying to upload pics from Flickr for the Open Army Category, unfortunately it's only posting links. Can someone help explain what I'm doing wrong please? Thanks.
I think the pictures aren't set for Public or Sharing? When you click into one of the images, there should be an arrow to the bottom right of the image (kinda curved to the right) which is the Share button. On your pics this is greyed out instead of being bright white.
If you go into your image and scroll down the page there should be some 'Additional Options', are your images set to 'Public'?
Your album isn't set to share. I can follow the link to the pics, but can't get access to the share bit.

My sincere thanks to Pendraken, for this opportunity!
I guess this is a message from GOD, that I must now, finally, get started on painting up my buddy's British Army of the Rhine force. I'll be submitting something from that.
I first heard about this over at The Wargames Directory, where I get my news. I've JUST started a thread over there, too, if anyone wants to discuss or share ideas and submissions. I may even blog my progress on my project, there.
Again, my thanks to Leon, and everyone at Pendraken. They DO take good care of us, do they not???

Hi Dariq Al Wazyr
There seems a very patrician determination to regard the plebians as halfwits. An invitation to revolution and military dictatorship.

Jim, you are linking to a link not the image itself. On the pages you linked to, click on the image to get to the picture itself and link that. Most picture hosting sites have an option for the owner to create a link that can be cut and pasted at that point.
Hope that helps.
Nice stuff in the photos, by the way.
If you Quote this post you'll see the difference in what we've both posted.

For the Pre 20th Century Foot category I have mine being based on a single stand. Currently I have one mounted officer that is part of the group. Is this allowed in the category ? He is 1 out of 39 foot. If not I will remove. Thanks

No, you can only use some votes if you like, so once, twice, or up to 5 votes per category.
But only 1 vote per entry ?

My votes are in, some superb efforts there guys. Well done all and best of luck.
Wow, really tough voting decisions, so many great entries in each category. Having only recently joined the forum its been great to see all the varied entries -lots of inspiration to further my painting and basing techniques (and sooo much temptation to just get 1 or 2 or 10 new armies in different eras!!!)
Well done everyone looking forward to seeing the winners

Votes have been cast! Some really lovely brushwork and basing on display and so many different painting styles that really bring out so much of the sculpting. I'd back that all the way.
I saw a few painting styles I'd never have thought of by myself, and might just give them a go.
It's certainly true that a big bright photograph does a lot to show the minis at their best.
Misunderstood the system, I first voted once in each category then thought we were allowed 5 in each which was great because there are so many brilliant entries.
Now I see I was right the first time and have to go back and reassign a single vote, it will be difficult and I think everyone should be proud of their work, great to see so many passionate hobbyists with such a wide range of interests.
