I am looking at getting a new army, or a start on one anyway, for the 1866 period. A friend I game with has Austrians and I wanted something to play against him. Doesn't have to be a historical opponent but more something a bit interesting and nice Pendraken sculpts.
Any suggestions?

A Prussian army pack will do you well, many armies wore Prussian style uniforms, or, if you read around the forum, there are many ideas for The Italians.
Unfortunately, most of the minor nations backed Austria as Saxons and Bavarians, while they lasted, were anti-Prissian.
You could try Wurttemberg? Just watch the piping, it's a nightmare!
I'd go for Italian. 1866 is the first time the national Italian army went into action. The infantry are pretty easy to paint and are similarly attired to the French of the period, The Bersaglieri are very attractive looking troops and are the elite of the army. There are also very interesting looking light and heavy cavalry. Ralph Weaver has written a very good book on the 1866 battle of Custozza which has excellent illustrations of the troops.
Baden had a nice, compact infantry/cavalry division that wore uniforms modelled on the Prussians.
Baden fought in greatcoats and peaked caps. Hessen-Darmstadt
also fought in caps as opposed to the pickelhaube.
1859 Piedmont will do for 1866 Italians.

Think it was John Pocock who wrote the book, Ralph did some of the illustrations; good book to have.
I agree with Cam. I have the excellent Custozza book.
You can't go wrong with 'Armies of 1866' or googling Grosser-Generalsstab .
Danes for 1864?
If not in grey greatcoat the infantry pretty well double as Union troops for ACW?
