Ottoman Armies

Hi,

I read with interest your posts here and on other forums about pictures of Ottoman troops. These are great and very useful but I am also interested in the composition and order of battle of the Ottoman armies. In particular Ottoman armies in the period 1650 - 1750.

So I thought I would send you a message to see if you have any information, links, etc., concerning the above?

I am also interested in the tactics used by the Ottomans. Again mainly in the period 1650-1750 but also general. Do you have any information on this?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give,

Nick

Hi Nick,

See a collection of Ottoman naval and army orders of battle (http://rusmilhist.blogspot.com.au/search/label/Ottoman%20Empire%3A%20army%20and%20fleet)
Renaissance Turks by George Gush (http://warfare.likamva.in/Renaissance/10&11_Turks.htm)
The Corps of The Janizaries, by Arthur Leon Horniker (http://www.xenophon-mil.org/milhist/modern/janizar.htm)
Janissary Orta Symbols (http://warfare2.netai.net/Ottoman/Janissary_Orta_Symbols.htm)
The most important part of the army were the sipahis but I don't think the tactics were very complicated. For the Janissaries see The Janissaries Use Of Volley Fire During The Long Ottoman-Habsburg War Of 1593-1606 And The Problem Of Origins by Günhan Börekçi (http://sehir.academia.edu/GunhanBorekci/Papers/203156/A_Contribution_to_the_Military_Revolution_Debate_The_Janissaries_Use_of_Volley_Fire_during_the_Long_Ottoman-Habsburg_War_of_1593-1606_and_the_Problem_of_Origins). The Ottomans also had sophisticated siege techniques.
A contemporary account can be found in the e-book of The present state of the Ottoman Empire by Sir Paul Rycaut, 1667 (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/byEuropeans/Rycaut-The_present_state_of_the_Ottoman_Empire.htm)

Ta from here as well, interesting reading as I'm in the throws of painting up an Ottoman army of a similar period as well!
