Title: 28mm Romans
Post by: Vulpine on 11 May 2014, 04:36:10 PM
So, just started a very large progect.

I'm doing a very large army of Romans. Got a very good deal on some older Peri minatures Romans. Missing bases (that pedraken has provided) and shields (Ordered from Warlord) in order to sort them out.

I also requested Leon at Pendraken to custom make some movement trays for me, very nice they are also!

I have well over 300 men. So to face me, 3 mates are comming together, cash and time, to do celts. That's 600+ Celts, around a dozen chariots and then 40 odd cavelry!

We are also going to make a board for it and scenarios dating from the second invashion of Briton (Early Imperial) through Bodicca and most likly up to the withdrawal from Briton.

6k Roman army list

That is going to look a stunning game. What is the wash / dip that you used, it seems effective but has been quite gentle on the colours.

Hi Norm.

For the Legionnaire:
• I spray paint a undercoat of ArmyPainter Black or Gray
• I spray paint a Base coat of ArmyPainter Metal
• I then do detail, Flesh, Red, Brown, one coat, no highlighting (that's it!)
• Then a coat of wash (Liquid Talent!) I use a mix of black (about 1/9 Black and water)*

For the Sheilds
• I spray paint a undercoat of ArmyPainter Black or Gray
• I spray paint a Base coat of ArmyPainter Red
• Paint Yellow detail (I have the embossed shields)
• Spray with Gloss Varnish.

This thread will be kept up to date with all aspects of this project. All three tribes of celts, Romans, the board, the scenarios, the games!

Well I was thinking of doing 10mm Romans, but after my Divorce (From a wife who would not allow me to spend my own money on minatures) I thought I would do 28mil and have a bit of detail (sorry Leon).

I also have a lot of 10mm to sort out, DrWho, Zulu, Alien Etc so a bit if 28 won't harm me.

Very similar to paint than standard Romans but with there crest painted white, then inked with a watered down yellow wash.

Do you all think the command should be on the front line?

The Centurion should be on the front leading the regiment. But the Horn blower and Stndard?

I've put them on the front as that's the done thing in Warhammer Fantasy. But they are smaller units.

Also, I imagine the Romans making a wall with the shields and they don't have shields?

So what do you all think? Move the standard and horn blower to the center or back? Or keep 'em on the front?

A standard is to be followed. And a musician communicates the officer's wishes. You know my methods, Watson. Apply them.

Post by: Ithoriel on 24 May 2014, 02:41:07 AM
Centurions might be in the front rank if things were desperate and standard bearers and musicians might lead in an advance but by point of contact the front rank should be legionaries or auxilia with spear/ sword/ shield, so I'd say it depends what phase of the battle the unit is representing ... or to put it another way, do what you think looks best there's an explanation for either option!

Bizarre... first post was actually in response to the Night goblin thread but somehow ended up here. Suspect touch pad-thumb integration issues...

If your guys are on single bases in movement trays pop them to front when marching, back a rank when it gets down to the shoving and bleeding :)

"Competition" Warhammer players might balk (the standards not in the front rank, no bonus!) but stuff 'em.

Right, first part of the terrain building...

The board is recycled from the African board
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=5712.0;wap2

It has a textured coat already, using a mix of paint with sand mixed in. I've added some more hills by mixing up polly filler. Top tip for the hills. Make a pile with your filler about the size you want the hill, then use a wet 3inc paint brush to smoth it out.

Then once dry a coat of paint ontop. I have now given it a coat of green paint as tomorow will do another coat and spinkle grass flock onto it before it drys.

For the path I've used decorators calk to outline it before painting it brown. I have made sure each one starts and ends at the same point on the board so each can be swapped changing the layout .

Because of the bases the trees from my winter board fit perfect and just look slightly frosty.

I think front rank is best. It may be correct in any case but more to the point, the opponent can tell what units have what.

Another regiment of Legionaries done! These will be Vetrans, a lot these have older variants of armour and a few have gladiator style gauntlet armour to help protect the sword arm, a lot of Romans lost the sword arm fighting, this was a add hock solution that Legionairs would chose to use.

Board compleat. It's 4ft by 8ft and can be altered. I've done a cross road board, a river, a plain board, a board with 1 hill and one with 2 hills.

Can't get all the board in this pic!

Long roman road, in the distance you can just work out some Romans on the horizon.

That's some serious weight of metal there, and I love the slave girls - what self respecting Emperor would take the field without them?
Title: Re: 28mm Romans
Post by: Vulpine on 07 June 2014, 07:59:06 PM
The army is a boat load of metal! Probably worth more in scrap than I paid for them!!

However, they are looking good! Only got 3 regiments of Legionairs, one very small squad of Auxiliaries and the 4 scorpions with crew and 20  Auxiliarie Cavelry.

The slave girls and retinue bring a lot of character to the unit. Instead of just the Genral on his own, his entourage make him look more important. I think it will look fab with the Genral at the back of the field with his advisors and slaves attending him.

Funny how no-one can resist a chance to stick on a bit of crumpet (including your humble Aztec-fancier). First time I've seen one in the imperial Roman ranks, mind you.

Not yet! Next Wednesday the map campaign starts!

Watching the other three players doing celts... Very worried, the amount of them.

Your right FK, any excuse!

Here's a pic of some Archers I've just finished.

Is it foggy with you today?

I'm sure these look grand in person - but the photos really haven't come out well at all - they look very grainy, which is usually due to lack of light, but some of the photos seem quite bright, so I'm not sure what's up.
