Title: Battle of Five Armies?
Post by: nikharwood on 17 July 2010, 10:24:08 PM
I've just re-discovered my copy of GW's BoFA rulebook [I've only got the rules - not a fan of 10mm plastics]...anyone done this using Pendraken figures? Care to share how you approached it, codes used, thoughts, pics etc etc

I'd like to do the whole BoFA & LoTR massed-battles in 10mm really....Helm's Deep anyone?!  8)

Not done it for BoFA, but i did recently order figures for use with Rohan and Isengard using Warmaster Ancients.

For Rohan i used a mix of Late Roman Cavalry (e.g. ARL12, 13,14), and Anglo Saxons (e.g. AS2, 3, 4, 6, etc.)

For the Orcs of Isenguard i drew heavily from the fantasy Orcs ranges - obviously!

Howdy Nik a roo!

Yes, I ran a wargaming class on the Battle of Five Armies the same year the first LotR movie hit the screens. There is a write up on the battle at the Stronghold. All minis used were Pendraken, except the Beorn, Pendraken doesnt have bears sooo I had to use one from the GW Warmaster Fantasy Kislev army.  It was great fun and the kids really liked it. I think there were 8 goblin armies, 1 human, 1 elf and 2 dwarf armies. I gave Thorin and his band of 13 an army, I know, I know but it worked for the class and the kids questioned that army also but once the gaming started - nobody cared :=D

See if you can find that battle report, it might help?

Drat - the Stronghold site has been taken down, I just found out since Alan has moved. He is currently looking for another free server to host it. Nik, I will look for the writeup and send you a PDF.

I haven't done this in 10mm, but often thought about it.

However I probably can't justify another scale for LOTR as already have 25mm. We did a refight of Helms Deep at an open day last year with 2000 figures on the table, all 25mm, all metal and not a single GW miniature amongst them.

Nice... you know I'm going to ask if you've got any pics, right?  8)

Its impossible for that much lead to roll across a table without at least one picture being taken...

I'm sure I've got some pictures somewhere, I'll have a look and see what I can dig out.
