Title: Curing Putty - Abracadabra!
Post by: WeeWars on 18 March 2014, 12:29:48 PM
I'm sure everyone but me knows about this but I was in the dentist yesterday and was surprised he had the ability to cure his modelling putty with one beep of his magic wand.

"The development of the curing light greatly changed dentistry. Prior to the development of the dental curing light, different materials had to be used in order to have a resin based composite material placed in a tooth. The material used prior to this development was a self-curing resin material. These materials were mixed separately; an A material and a B material. The A material was the base and the B material was the catalyst. This resin material was mixed first and then placed in the tooth. It is then self-cured/hardened fully after 30 – 60 seconds. This presented several issues to the dentist. The first being that the dentist did not have control over how quick the material was cured. Once mixed the curing process started. This resulted in the dentist having to quickly and properly place the material in the tooth. If the material was not properly placed, then the material had to be excavated and the process started over again.
The development of this new technology gave way to new light activated resin materials. These new materials are much different to the previous ones. These materials do not need to be mixed and can be dispensed directly into the site. This new malleable resin material can only be fully cured/harden with a dental curing light. This presents new advantages for dentists. The time constraint is now lifted and the dentist can now assure that the material is properly placed."

 Hmmm.

Well.....The lights aren't as expensive as I thought they'd be......
Now to find out how much the putty is.....and if it can go in a vulcanising press.

If only the manufacturers made 'instant putty' in a colour other than black ....then it'd be a damn sight more useful for making the wee men.

Good find that man !

Cheers - Phil

I can confirm that the putty is strong when cured as the thing in my mouth (although temporary) is tough enough for much munching.

Wouldn't mind getting hold of a sample of that putty.
Though I presume you HAVE to have one of the curing lamps to get it to set.

Thinking about it.....Pretty sure we've got at least one dentist on the forum. :-\
Thanks Michael.

The putty only cures with the light wave so you are free to work on it until you decide it's time to cure.

Seems like sci-fi but my dentist appeared surprised by my surprise.

The dentists may be keeping it all their own big secret.  ;D  Like me, you probably raided their supplies in the past for modelling wax and shaping tools. They may have learnt to be wary of us!  ;D

It doesn't seem that expensive http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30-days-sales-Dental-syringe-Universal-composite-Light-Curing-Resin-Refill-A3-5-/301120970676?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item461c355fb4 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30-days-sales-Dental-syringe-Universal-composite-Light-Curing-Resin-Refill-A3-5-/301120970676?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item461c355fb4). It might be worth it just to see what the consistency of it is, even if you can't cure it with the lamp. Still the write up just says blue light so maybe you can get away with an el cheapo Christmas light bulb :D :D :D

Cheers

That seems cheaper than some of the other stuff I've found...Thanks Grumps !
I'll check out some of the dental supply firms first.....Think I've thrown my old catalogues away, so I'll have to start from scratch.
What I haven't tried yet, is mixing the black 'Instant Putty'.....Which goes off in about 5 minutes....With 'Magic Sculp', which should slow the curing time down and give an 'easier to work with' colour.
Might have an experiment tomorrow.

Not sure I'll be able to get a good colour match, Gareth......Unless dark grey is suitable ? ;)

Cheers - Phil.

Didn't realise the light was sick.
