Is it docu-drama?

I dont think so Gareth

Professor Robert Bartlett tells the extraordinary story of England's most dysfunctional, yet longest ruling, royal dynasty. Henry II forges a mighty empire encompassing England and much of France. His sons, Richard the Lionheart and John, then turn on their father and each other, bringing the dynasty to the edge of annihilation

Loved it; most of it I knew but some revelations.

I think the most commonly known bits have been covered so the next two episodes should be very interesting.

I watched it. My knowledge of the English Medieval period is quite sparse so a fair whack of it was new to me. Good stuff and will definitely watch the others. The bloke's presentation and choice of backdrops is good.

The whole 'Anarchy' period is one that you dont see done a lot in wargaming, no idea why, just seem to fly under the radar a bit

Don't think there was anything in it that I didn't know already but still found it hugely enjoyable, looking forward to episodes 2 and 3.

Many moons ago, when DBA was young and so was I (well younger than now at least :)  ), I played Richard in a campaign game. The Young Henry and I brought Henry I to battle during the course of which the Henry's managed to kill each other. I was then crushed by an alliance of Geoffrey, John and Phillip of France. With my army reduced to only 3 elements I succumbed, quite historically, to an infected wound (There were some deadly and/or amusing Event Cards in use with counters to every ploy, alas there was no apothecary to save me :(  ).  Geoffrey and John then proceeded to crush France with a series of raids which, in the game, were the medieval equivalent of "nuking them back into the Stone Age." John succumbed in a flurry of cards. Can't remember the exact card names but it was something like "Sire I believe you have the tidal table upside down" which could have been countered by "Local Guide" except he fell to "Footpads" who might have been crushed by "Provost Squad" had they not been lured away by "You there, come with me!" and so, having failed to roll 4+ to escape the flood, John drowned. At which point Geoffrey Plantagenet took the throne with the regnal name William III. Not quite a historical outcome but lots of fun.

Sounds fun...bit like Kingmaker

The bastard child of the DBA campaign system, Kingmaker, Magic the Gathering and the campaign designer's warped imagination.

Light-hearted campaigns can be huge fun, I recommend them to anyone who can round up three or four like-minded friends.

Kingmaker is one of the alltime great games, there have been many instances where a foolproof grab for power was thwarted a random 'Peasants Revolt... Percy to Alnwick' or a random attack of Plague.

Two or thre years ago Robert Bartlett did a very good series on the Normans and this looks like an excellent follow on set of programmes.
