To the best of my knowledge it was a section weapon with a two man crew, when used by infantry units. I presume it would be the same when issued to units like engineers.

Yes it's the Russian LMG, but also used in tanks.

It was a squad weapon with one per 11 man squad. There were some slight variations depending on the year or trooptype but one per squad for a regular infantry unit will get you through the war!

The ideal was originally 1 LMG per section, 4 sections per platoon and 3 platoons per company so 12 LMG to a company. There were always 2 MMG attached as well.

This would vary from this standard layout during the summer of '41 to a very basic structure of 2 LMG to a platoon and 2 Platoons to a company during late '41 through to late early '43 when orgainisations began to get back to standard. To a 2 LMG per section, 3 sections per platoon and 3 platoons per company with 18 LMG and 2 MMG, late in the war.

This link is pretty good for Soviet WW2 organisations:

Cheers, Rob  :)
