The way figures come to life as you paint in the last major area.
Springing an ambush on the flank of the enemy guards.
Lines that hold long enough against superior forces to allow your better troops to turn their flanks.
Polish hussars, Samurai, Prussian grenadiers, Hellenistic elephants, Iberian scutarii in wedge, mixed Byzantine bow/LTS formations, Aztec eagle warriors, Swiss pikemen, Zulu impis in classic bull formation.
Seeing a new opponent try a sneaky move for the first time.
Having my little one bring me an espresso and admire my Celtic tartans.
Ah, I love this hobby!
The satisfaction of completing that final unit for your army.
A well balanced army.
The hearty thunk of a Pendraken package falling on the doormat.
Research.
First outings.
The geometric beauty of the horse and musket period.
When a unit gets lucky in a game and succeeds beyond all expectation.
Well handled artillery.
The peccadilloes of forum members.
Especially painting in the hands and faces on a figure (I always paint flesh last) that's when the magic happens!
Cheers,
Rob
The sweep and flow of a big battle.
The chatter and hum of a room full of wargamers
Slipping away from my own game to see what everyone else is doing
Getting the chance to play with someone else's beautifully painted figures
The after-game post mortem.
Luckily, I read the title twice because I got it completely wrong the first time. :)
Going to shows (apart from Salute which puts me in mind of a cattle market). Meeting up with traders and other wargamers and having a great chat or in some cases a great catch-up-spanning-several-years-chat.
Nicely painted figures and terrain...anybody's that are inspirational.
Being able to help or pass on information to someone who's stuck on something.
Nicking -sorry, adapting- other peoples ideas. :D
Gluing flock onto bases; means another unit is finished.
Research and finding an important snippet that I didn't know about.
Dice that will only throw sixes.
Wargamers using the formations and tactics of the time as opposed to 'using' the rules to win for them.
That's all I can think of at the mo.

No don't do that. It's a fake.
These dice are myths. No die will ever show a 6 when needed. I REALLY know !
;)
Ahem!
