Cheers Brian, be interested to see it when it's all painted up as well!

So THAT`s what those small pieces are for... they`re top pieces to join both sides of a door linking two tiles Duh!
Six :-[
Yes the tops of the doors but how do you glue them together? I've tried and then the doors wouldnt fit over the 2 side walls of the dungeon. Soo I just clipped them and used them as bases for the minis to run around in the dungeon :P
This is comforting to read. I could never figure out what those pieces were...now I know! (I ended out propping the doors against the walls, which actually works fine. I might even glue them in place eventually.)
I must admit I've never tried to fit the doors myself, but there's some pics on Germy's site here: http://www.germy.co.uk/makingminidungeon.html (http://www.germy.co.uk/makingminidungeon.html) Scroll down to Stage 9 for the doors.
Ah!! Now I see how it works. (actually Stage 10) The top piece is glued - between - the door pieces. I was gluing the top piece on top of the door pieces. Will have to try that way next door order I make. Thanks Leon for point us to the door picture on Germy's page.
Something my mate noticed and i think is a fantastic idea is this, the joins on the doors is a bit fine. so in order to make it a more solid join im using unused normal office staples as like a scaffold for teh doors to glue to. It looks like it should work briliantly.

That's a pretty damn good idea! I like that. 8)
So you all get the door idea now ;D
I might just re-paint my dungeon after seeing this thread 8)
Mind you could do with a few pieces that I didn't get first time round *cough* stairs *cough* ::)

My Dungeon Pack arrived in the post today. You certainly get a lot of pieces for the money. Can't wait to start painting. I have my grand daughter staying with me this week so spare time for painting will be limited although I'm sure she would join in if I let her :)
Its sanding the edges and bases thats taking time, i keep putting it off.
i would like to see some painted pics, as I am tempted
These are not my pics (http://www.flickr.com/photos/14340437@N05/sets/72157608395486506/show/) but a good Pendungeon-Slideshow.
Very very nice, I wish I hadn't seen it now :( ;D
A nice slide which takes me back to playing the original D&D at school at lunchtime. Many happy memories of those times :).
Excellent stuff - I'm feeling all nostalgic like Steve too...
I must say, though, that this one falls quite easily into the "I don't fancy yours much" category:

She's Aneka from Krod Mandoon [real name = India de Beaufort] - lovely, eh?

Okay, now I've finished the first part of the painting, here are some pictures as promised.
Now I need to fix some mistakes (bad brushing, discontinuities..) and also add some shading and furnitures too make it look.. like a dungeon.
Still, here are some pictures of the work in progress: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48935127@N00/sets/72157624586469077/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/48935127@N00/sets/72157624586469077/)

I like it!
There really nice mate.
I wish i could pull my finger out and get working on mine again.
Thanks to you guys.
count_zero99uk, it's not that hard nor that time consuming. I even under coated without any spray within some hours... (that part was the most tedious)
As a feedback, I would recommend to use a spray or at least use some textured paint for the undercoating. I guess the "Dark Earth Brushscape" textured paint from Coat D'Arms could do the trick.
There are two reasons for that :
1/ the base floor texture is only "textured" on some parts of the dunjon and its hard to do a decent brushing on flat parts...
2/ the resin cast has lots of small bubbles where the paint won't go without spending some time on each bubble.. except when your paint is "textured enough" I guess
Now for the main painting, if you don't want to take a full grey brushing approach, I would recommend to unify the colors you use at the "interface" of each part. This way, you avoid any ugly discontinuity. Yeah.. it didn't seem that obvious at the time..
RE: the doors.
I think I'll have to be propping mine up as they are all shorter than the walls, so if I construct them properly they'll sit off the ground (and I don't fancy painting loads of "Mind The Step" signs at 10mm).
Although now I've typed it I could make some steps... :-\
Just finished painting the resin - no doors or furniture yet.

I really neeeeed to paint faster...
Excellent - really nicely done 8)
wow, that`s impressive.
Really well done.
:)
Alright, I advanced on the painting. Here are some results.
As stated before by arabian knight, the skeletons and orcs are the easy part... I'm a bit scared of going for the other big bad boys and the heroes...

I love those. Really good photos and well painted. Those zombies look good.
Really looking forward to my Dungeon pack turning up.
I'll stop gushing now... :-[
I've spent a fair bit of the weekend going through the various Warmaster figures I had which could be useful for a dungeon. Found a couple of packs of Pendraken trolls, a few Orcs with large glaives. A few goblins. Warmaster Empire look like they will provide a bunch of evil humans, even found a few Irregular Orcs that I had received in some eBay deal. All in all a nice little bunch of critters to add to the dungeon.
those are excellent Cyril.
I've stalled on the orc's with humungous swords, so it's nice to see those in your corridor - might just give me the push to get them done. As a note funnily I looked at their hair and immediately thoughr - RED as well ;D
Also good to see you seem to be the first person to have done the doors as designed. If I might have to have another go at trying to get the buggers to glue togther again. I've grumpily given up a couple of time already! ~X(
Thanks arabianknight, it's good to see we built a "motivation loop" ! I also need it badly !
As for the orcs, I agree, their hair couldn't be of any other color.
What's more angry than an orc ? A PUNK orc that's right !
As for the doors, I used the "staple" trick someone else had described here : you glue a sprue of staples under the top of the door system, then glue the two door parts on the "sides" of the staples. It's quite sturdy and works like a charm !
Good God you`ve done a good job on the dungeon, and the furnishings are absolutely superb. Your monsters are so cool and..... okay you totally put me to shame :P
Amazing work 8)
Looking forward to seeing all this put into action. A Batrep with lavish photos, maybe?
Six
Thanks Six, you know, you're the Master Yoda of Dungeon World to me. So I'll try my best for the other monsters and heroes ! :D
My friends are looking forward to play so there will undoubtedly be a batrep. However, I'll need to learn how to make good pictures because I'm not satisfied with the ones I took... bad focus, bad lighting... this really kills the feel of a situation one tries to take.
Edit: I forgot to answer to fred12df. Thanks, it's good to see this motivates you !
About the miniatures from other companies, I guess one can find lots of possibilities but trust me, you'll have enough paint work to do with the basic dungeon pack :) Plus, Pendraken offers lots of possibilities with their huuuge range of minis !
Indeed there are many many options in the Pendraken range - and I have some on order.
These were ones that I already had sitting in a drawer so the thought of having a shiny dungeon soon (or soonish) made me have a rummage and do some painting.
Your photos look pretty good - how would you like to improve them? You could perhaps get a bit more depth of field, with a higher f stop. Are you using a tripod to allow you to use longer exposure times.

Hi Cyril,
lol I`m just a rules writer who really wants to see gamers get something half decent which really reflects the sheer potential of this amazing range of miniatures. If my efforts brings happiness to others, then I will have succeeded. My inspiration came from seeing the majority of gamers in this scale using borrowed systems like Warmaster, Necromunda, Space Hulk etc (notice these all seem to be Games Workshop based) and I thought it was time to start along a different avenue, something less `someone elses`which would allow individuals and groups of friends to tailor the game into their own, using a basic rules engine as a foundation... yet coming from an entirely different mind met.
This way, each group of gamers can work with less does and donts and more "hey! why don`t we try this new idea... it might be fun".
The Mass Battle system I`m working on will complete the cycle and allow gamers to switch between their dungeon crawl rpgs, and yet be able use the same miniatures to play full scale (or skirmish size) games alongside it`s simpler DW cousin.
Enjoy.
Six :-)
You're a good man Six, I really like your philosophy !
I'll try to get some players around the table with a couple of beers when I get the chance. And be sure your work will be put at good use !
But enough talking, here are some pictures of the bigger denizen of the dungeon :

The giant was really hard to paint for me. I'm really bad when it comes to painting skin (that's also why I took a dark picture :) )
Last step : the heroes !
OMG Cyril, these are simply A-W-E-S-O-M-E to the max.
How DO you do it?
Mine look like a shambles when compared alongside yours :-\
I`m highly impressed actually, mostly because its shown me just what can be achieved in this scale with the right skill and patience. Not a level I will ever be able to attain, but it IS inspiring and will make me keep one eye focused over my shoulder at your photos to remind me what I SHOULD be doing.
You`re work is amazing Cyril, I think these are the best examples of painted 10mm Pendraken Fantasy Miniatures I`ve ever seen, to date.
Thanks for sharing, and I avidly look forward to seeing more.
Six :)
Wow, thanks Six... I don't know what to say ! #:-S
But you know, I actually only have one technique which works really well on the 10mm scale where details are "over enhanced" by the designers:
- undercoat in black
- for each part of a mini where you plan to put a color, always have 2 version of this color: the color itself and a brighter version
- apply the standard color by brushing heavily on the details of said part
- use the brighter color to dry-brush on the same details more gently this time
- optionnaly, when not satisfied by the results, apply some washing and hope for the best
Rince and repeat !
The best miniature you can practice on is the skeleton :
- undercoat in black (yes, I said black !)
- brush the bones with a light brown color
- drybrush with some "bone white" color
- optionnaly drybrush gently with usual white color
And due to the bits of brown color, your skeleton will look as if it has just risen from the grave !
WOW, thanks for the advice Cyril.
It`s too late for the collection I have already painted (I went for white undercoating, which kinda works for me because I`m a non fussy... aka lazy... modeller), however I still have vast numbers more to paint up. But I think I`ll redo my skeletons trying your way.
Only one thing, my skeletons are painted and varnished... any advice on how I remove the coating back to the original metal, or can I just black spray undercoat over them as they are?
Cheers,
Six :-)
Actually, I`ve been talking to Paula, my partner, and doing some thinking (ouch, brain hurts).
Cyril, we think we`d really like to add some of your 10mm dungeon and fantasy photos to my next book which is due out in hardback later this year. If we gave you some ideas of little cameo/set pieces we`d like to include, would you be interested in allowing me to add them to the book interior art (possibly the cover as well)?
My addy is: gypsy__dance@hotmail.com <-- double underscore between gypsy and dance
If you`d like to get in touch I can let you know the details?
Cheers again,
Six :)
Six I would be honored (I mean.. honoured :) ) !
I'll send you a mail in a minute and we'll see what we can do !
Now for the painting.
Painting it black on top of the old layers of paint may ruin some details.
If I was you, I would first try to put some shader on your skeleton, then drybrush it with bone white.
Coat d'Arms released 3 different types : examples are HERE (http://www.blackhat.co.uk/coat_darms/supershader.php) (I would advise to use the "421 Dark Brown").
If this is not satisfying, there are many ways to strip paint from minis.
There is a good tutorial HERE (http://mikemonaco.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/stripping-figures-part-2-pine-sol/) but others can be found with google. Lots of people tend to use "Pine Sol" which seems ok for both metal and plastic (I use white spirit for metal).
Have replied to your mail... and the honour is mine I assure you :)
Thank you so much for the effects advice and especially the paint stripping link. I`ll pour over these tomorrow and see what I can do about making my skeletons look a little less like bleached white Halloween Pound Shop decorations lol.
Catch you soon, and keep up the great work.

The photos are a bit blurry however, I'll try to take better one when I get the time.
They look good Cyril - nice to see the figures in situ in your dungeon. I do like the way you have made the dungeon look very "used".
Nice one Cyril!
8)
Wow Cyril incredible!
I've added some of your pics to a news story on our website: http://www.pendraken.co.uk/News.aspx?NewsID=35
Top-notch Cyril, nicely done 8)
Well wicked Cyril; they just keep getting better and better all the time.
A game enjoyed with minis and a dungeon as well crafted as this will be incredible, and your friends have an awesome treat in store for them when they play (unless you plan to play solo?). Like fred says, your dungeon looks used, gritty and totally `real`.
Very cool altogether =P~
Six
Wo ho ho ! So I made it to the Pendraken headline news ! :o
Thanks a lot guys !
Indeed I like when the dungeon feels cold, gritty and dirty. In one word: hostile. :d
Also I'm still thinking about how to base the minis. Actually I'd really like them to get square bases, like in the good ol' days !
By the way, does anybody know where to get a bunch of plastic bases compatible with the dungeon squares ?
I guess I'll use Pendraken square bases for the heroes but I'd like some plastic for the others in order to customize them.
And thanks again everyone !
Edit: to Six, I plan to play it with a couple of friends. A good bunch of them seem half interested/half amused by the scale, but they won't laugh when the giant crush its mace on their face !
Edit: to Six, I plan to play it with a couple of friends. A good bunch of them seem half interested/half amused by the scale, but they won't laugh when the giant crush its mace on their face !
Hahaha, way to go Cyril. No I doubt very much the amusement and half-hearted interest will stay, or will show for long on their faces when they see just what fun you can have with 10mm. In fact, I imagine their expressions will change to pure envy as they too wish they had a similar collection as your own :D
Six ;)
Bases
I used 12mm plastic counters, and while they are a good size they are really a bit light so figures tend to topple over. UK 1p coins have a good weight to them but are bit large at 19mm.
Coins are very cheap as bases even the smallest plastic counters are 2.5p each.
If you really want square bases then I don't think I have seen any small ones
Starting to put together ideas for my own dungeon (I know, how could I not possibly have one already! :-[).
Managed a quick test tonight, not entirely sold on the outcome.
Went brown rather than grey.
Dry brush Buff
(http://www.germy.co.uk/images/dungeontest3.jpg)
Started painting different colours on the stones. Pale Sand in this case.
Continued with other shades up to a red/brown.
Finished with a brown wash over the entire piece.
Possibly a tad too multi coloured :-\
Interestingly enough, I've done mine in sandstone too Jeremey:

Mine are a bit dirtier than yours though... and I've got some 'secret' plans for them (beyond playing B4 The Lost City)
;) 8)
OMG the Egyptian feel to these sandstone dungeons is simply crying out to me "Victorian Steampunk" Sands of Time, The Hunt or Ra`la`nuin`s Tomb, Dr Livesy`s Journals, oooh the mind is careening with ideas now. I`ve wanted to do 10mm Victorian pulp and horror for ages (ever since seeing the light and realising it can be done). hmmmmm, I may just have to repaint my entire dungeon now , you do realise - you rotters ;)
.... Its all your fault.
8->
hehe
Six
Wow.. awesome.. simply awesome.. :o
I agree with Six, I'd really love to see some Egyptian pulp action in such dungeon ! :-bd
Funnily enough...that's what I'm working on - including a focus on The Mummy & Scorpion King films...I've got detailed notes at home - will post tonight!
Wow Nik, I`d r-e-a-l-l-y like to see this come together.
The Mummy trilogy (movie version) is an especial favourite topic of mine, and it wouldn`t take much for me to get heavily into this.
Just out of interest, as an aside, because I truly don`t know the Pendraken Miniatures range for this period well enough to make a proper judgement... which figures would I pick to make up a typical 20`s 30`s small skirmish force of British/American soldiers, and explorers/personality types?
Six :-)
Nik's famous now too: :)
http://www.pendraken.co.uk/News.aspx?NewsID=36
:-[ :-* :-[
Nik, those are great.
Nik and Germy really like the brown sandstone look. It's interesting go see that Niks more impressionistic method seems to look better than painting up individual stones. Now have to do some thinking while I wait for my dungeon to arrive about colour scheme...
Six - for pulp era adventurers probably have a look in the Boer war and SCW ranges for starters. You've got me thinking now as I have ordered some Egyptian figs and some other undead (can't remember if they are mummies or ghosts) so a few more modern adventurers could be interesting.
Glad you like it - my method for painting these:
Wash, dry, undercoat spray black
Wet overbrush: (used a 1/2 inch house-painting brush for this)
Charred Brown
Beasty Brown
Stipple: heavy => light
Leather Brown
Plague Brown
Earth
Desert Yellow
Khaki
Bleached Bone
Magic Wash:
Everything!
Final feather-light drybrush:
Bleached Bone
Matt spray varnish (4 coats)
The stippling was done over fairly random areas of the pieces so that some parts are darker, some lighter; I did aim to be lighter towards the edges of the pieces for definition. I did proper wreck a cheap paintbrush with the stippling too...
Took me about 40 minutes to paint from black undercoat.
I'll start a new thread with my thoughts on Egyptian / Mummy / Pulp...
Man... had I seen the work Nik and Germy did, I would have hesitated to post mine ! :-[
And thanks for the guidelines Nik !

Nah - yours is great Cyril, tres coolio 8)
You're welcome on the painting guide - does this mean you're going to get another set for the desert? ;) :P
40 minutes!!!! I'm really starting to hate you Nik ;)

Seriously this is very tempting, but I still have a lot of work to do before ! (basing, for instance :) )
AWESOME Nik,
you are a God amongst men.
I can`t believe some of the standards of painting I`m seeing here - I`m totally blown away by it all.
Look forward to seeing your thoughts on Pulp and Egyptian.
Six :-bd
I've just rediscovered a great stone painting tutorial.
Stone Painting Guide (http://www.manorhouse.cc/tutorial-howto-muri.asp)
I gave it a try yesterday, mine didn't come out as well as the tutorial but I was still pleased with the results. Unfortunately it was quite a lengthly
process. Not sure I could do a whole dungeon like it :o
You know Germy, when I saw your work I wondered how much time you spent for it !
I would never have the courage to paint brick by brick...
I think I will have to come up with a simpler method. Lovely as the results are, I don't have the time to as you say paint every brick! 8)
Also another point to remember is what ever technique you pick you need to be able to do it consistantly. Fine if you paint it all in one go but my guess is adding bits of dungeon later might give you a headache to get it to match! ~X(
That's a great tutorial with really nice results...but I'm not that patient ;)
After having to wait a couple of hours for the rain to stop, yesterday morning, I was able to finally get to the shed so I could spray my newly arrived dungeon black.
It dried fairly quickly as it was now very sunny, British weather :-\
A couple of heavy dry brushes of dark brown with a fairly large brush took 45 minutes. So I have no idea how Nik did the whole thing in 40 mins.
After a mid brown layer I painted a few bricks/tiles red-brown, some greenish and a few dark yellow. Then I dry brushed / stippled lots of different sandy colours over the top of everything. I think I own too many shades of 'sand' paint. This probably took 2-3 more Harwoods to paint.

I didn't paint anything - just overbrushes & straight to stippling...and I was working as fast as I could, downhill & with the wind behind me ;)
I like the idea of a 'Harwood' being a unit of time y'know...and so would my dad & his father [both horologists :)]
It's looking good though - when are you going to bung some dice at it & what will you play?
It's getting there - might go for a bit more sand as it looks a bit dark this morning.
Need to do the furniture and monsters but have a couple of days off this week so they may get done quite soon.
Probably give the dungeon world rules a whirl - with some randomisation thrown in to determine the layout. My kids might be interested in playing as well.
Painting speed is odd - apart from picking out a few tiles I pretty much went for dry brushing. But even though it was slower than your speed painting it still only took a couple of hours to get the whole dungeon looking good - which really makes this an easy project to get into and to make some real progress with.
Glad you like my new unit of measurement. I think it is a measure of amount painted in a period of time - rather than just a measure if time :-)
Good stuff, the different coloured tiles aren't too overpowering and give a nice effect.

Couldn't agree more 8)
Ok I've just finished the basing of some monsters, here are some results:

Last step: the heroes !
Very nice Cyril 8)
They look good Cyril.
In fact inspired my to try some photos of my own

Some lizard men look at a pool

I have attempted a Gila Monster style paint job on the lizards - not sure it has totally worked?? The water pools are one of those items that look much better painted, in the bare metal they look a bit odd - but with a bit of drybrushing the sculpting really shows through.

What I really like about the Pendraken monsters is that they are really big compared to human sized figures.
Ha ha fred, all hail the Anubis guard ! You should *definitely* take more pictures of them !
And I really love the big monster you painted,
As I just finished the basing of heroes, here is another picture of the heroes against the orcs:

Note the heroes had a better treatment for their bases since.. well.. they are the heroes !
Common guys, post some pictures of your works !
There are so many skilled people here, get in the ring ! ;D
There's some excellent Dungeon work going on here!
Great stuff fellas - really nice to see; I must get some more gribblies for my dungeon!
