Very nice :-bd
Looks like you've gone in completely the opposite direction to me on colouring ;)
Just hoping I can squeeze in enough painting time to get them finished - half-term and a daughter's birthday don't help unfortunately :'(
Cheers!
Meirion
Thanks. Looking forwards to yours.
It was an odd set of colours to get right without becoming too GW.
Those look great, the colour really suits them, as well as being away from the usual greens/browns we see on them.

Might as well add mine in here ;)
Imperial Terraguayan Nanotyrannus Riders - aka Dark Elf Raptor Riders!

I'll have to try and get some better photos in the daylight... :-\
Cheers!

Think yours are magnificent Meirion. You going to post your spears here too? I'm planning to get mine done in the next week or so...

Thanks Lemmey.
Absolutely love the colouring on yours. Are they modelled on leopard geckos?
Haven't started my spears or swords yet - still dithering on how many to stick on a base and in what configuration - however I have the base of crossbows I entered in the fantasy/sci-fi section:

They kind of came about by accident as a test piece for the raptor riders' colour scheme – I was trying to paint a special base of goblins, but had to abandon them due to time running short!
There are some other bits that I need to finish – including riderless raptor test-pieces - that I'll post as and when.
What rules are you basing for? Mine are for Dux Bellorum/HotT on 40x30mm.
Cheers,
Meirion
Mine too are on 40x30, I use Hail Cheesy Caesar. I think I've got six or seven of each on a stand, including cross bows.
As to the lizard, I think they were Leopard Geckos, when I get on the other computer I will confirm! ;)
Think your scheme is great, but I wanted mine to be broody like Moorcock's Melniboneans after the fall, a race in their end days.
Looking forwards to further comparrisons!
There all very nice
take care
andy
Lemmey's do look creepy. :) But green and yellow is too close to a rugby sweater for my taste. I can't imagine dark elves soaping each other's backs in the shower while singing "I met a young maiden called Arwen..." off-key and dropping cigarette ash in each other's beer. Or rather, I obviously can, but I don't want to.
Teaser photo of what I've painted so far ;)

Nice!
Looking good 8)
The rest of the army pack! They're not on 40x30 as previously noted, but 30 x 60mm :d

Top marks for Mr Busy !!.
And for those who hadn't realized.....Last night, Lemmey overtook the head prefect (That nice Mr Harwood) for the number of posts......erm.....posted.
Only Our Lord and Master has more ! (Lots !)
Mind you, I expect when Nik finally gets his internet connection at home, he'll be doing so many replies, that the forum will probably undergo meltdown.
Congratulations anyway, Will ! =D>
Come on Techo, you're nearly there too! ;)

I think that's the longest gap in about 25 years :(

I know, I know...well said, Ian. Aren't you supposed to be watching a load of big puppets? ;)
er NO...
He's too busy here Nik ... chatting to a bunch of muppets ;D
:D ;D :D
That's a fair point.
I did like the dog though:

Now I follow you......
been dodging a plague of bloody gof balls recently.

I never really got the point of golf.
I like cricket - when I hit a ball, someone else goes and finds it :)
Golf -
a) Way to ruin a good walk
b) Scottish method of hunting rabbits - badly
c) Way to clear an area in a pub by terminally boring the people all around you.
Returning a ball - that's what my little sisters labs are for.

I've got a question.... why dark elves are blue?
I bought some dark figures painted and they were blue ( a litle light thann yours). Now I am expanding the army but I am painting the reinforcemens ... flesh color that is the natural way for me. For some odd reason I feel comfortable with the mix :o.
No idea. Blame Gary Gygrax when they developed Drow for AD&D? :-\
Becuase they live underground and are eeeevviiillll! The black helps them blend into the darkness... and be more eeeeevvvviiiilllllll!
Yep two good explanation.
Maybe toxicpixie's answer is less academic but is more convincent.
I didn't released that blue eeeevvvilll dudes comes from D&D and pale skin tone comes from GW world.
Thanks!
Shades of Blue Meanies - from "Yellow Submarine".
IanS
I think it derives from the comic convention of shading black with blue, eg Superman's hair or Judge Dredd's uniform.
Gygax's drow were conceived as appearing like a photographic negative of a regular elf, hence black skin, white hair and eyes. He may even have used negatives to illustrate the weird, unlearthliness of their colouring.
The first place I remember seeing blue dark elves was in 1st Blood Bowl, the playing pieces were cardboard stand-ups with a cartoony illustration. The Darkside Cowboys were also shown as blue-skinned in the Blood Bowl 2 rulebook, although from the figures painted in White Dwarf and other illustrations pale skin was the more common choice.
Cheers,
Meirion
PS If you have an iDevice you can turn the screen negative by triple-tapping the button.
I've just had a play and real, colour photos of white skin come out blue :o
Illustrations can come out blue or grey, presumably depending on the pigments used and the surface they were painted on.
Who'd have thought! :-B
Cheers!
Meirion
That's quite cool :D
Fits with Gygaxs' initial conception of "Dark Elves" - or as described, Black... from wiki from the 1st Ed. MM -
QuoteThey are said to be evil, "as dark as faeries are bright"
Fighting Fantasy also had "Black Elves" IIRC who were the same, but I suspect Warhammer went from dark skinned ones to light when they got the mythology rolling and Dark Elves are dark because of their actions, but are pale because they're the pallid Arctic dwelling on-copyright infringing totes not stolen from D&D y'all versions of the already somewhat pale and wan High Elves...
Interestingly in Tolkeins conception "Dark Elves" just referred to Elves living in the shade of forests and trees, then was used for those who didn't travel West to see the Light of Valinor, as opposed to eeeeeevvvvviiiiiil "anti-elves".
Alan Garner's Svart Alfar (Black Elves) are black & white, piebald goblinoids. So many colour schemes to choose from!
I like Garners Svarts, they tick a nice Scandanavian style
Of dark elf / goblin for me, even if the Norse dark elf is more "dwarf" as we'd probably understand from D&D and Tolkien!
