Empires of Tal
Empires of Tal is a turn based set of rules for 10 mm and 15 mm miniatures set in fantasy or medieval time period. The game itself is not tied to any set of miniatures so it can easily be used with any figures as long as the bases that the figures are mounted on meet the games criteria. The game uses a 20 mm by 40 mm base as the foundation for the rules. All units contain one or more of these bass to form a legal unit. While command figures aside from the overall commander are typically mounted to a small circular base, like a penny. The overall commander is always mounted on a 20 mm by 40 mm stand to represent him and his retinue. Figures sold in 10 mm or 15 mm scale by companies like Eureka Miniatures (eurekamini.com.au), Games Workshop (gamesworkshop.com), Kallistra (kallistra.co.uk) and Pendraken (pendraken.co.uk) were primarily used to create armies used in play testing as they all use roughly the same size and style of bases. The actual number of figures on a base don't matter, it is the number of bases and the type of base that determines the number of hits the stand can take and how many dice are rolled to attack. If you would rather mount smaller numbers of figures on a base to make a larger army more affordable that is perfectly legal. The game itself is set in the fantasy realm of Tal where mighty armies clash against each other to gain or defend lands but in the end all are united against a common foe, the Lich Lord Talmorgoth and his throngs of undead.

Welcome, Ron - can you tell us a bit more about the game mechanics?  :)

Absolutely!

I just received the final printing today.

This is a section from the rules:

Mechanics

Empires of Tal relies on imperial measurements (inches) for distance and ten sided dice (D10) for attacking, casting spells and some situational tests. Attackers roll 1D10 for each point of Attack value when attacking an enemy per stand attacking. Based on the type of troop that is attacking, their morale, the weapon they are using and the armor of the defender, you come up with a Base To Hit number (BTH). The BTH number is then modified by things like cover, racial modifiers and the like to get a Total To Hit (TTH). Each dice that rolls equal to or exceeds that final TTH  number inflicts a hit on the unit it is attacking.

For example a standard unit of humans armed with spears is attacking a unit of Orcs. The Orcs are AC3 so consulting the weapons chart we see that a spear versus AC3 starts at a 5. The Humans charged so that lowers the 5 to a 4. The humans are Y morale so there is no modifier for morale. The Orcs have shields so that raises the target number by 1 back to a 5. The Humans are a regular unit so they roll 4 ten-sided dice per stand. Any results that are a 5 or higher inflict one hit on the Orc unit.

When the number of hits taken exceeds the hits that a stand can take, the stand is removed as a casualty. Casualties don't reduce the number of dice available until a stand is lost. Morale is always done with six sided dice (D6). A typical unit rolls one six sided dice (1D6) for each stand that it has with bonus dice given by heroes, overall commanders and spell effects.

Cards

A standard deck of playing cards is used to determine actions in each phase of the turn. While each card isn't assigned to a specific unit or figure, you must have one card present for each figure in your army. Typically this means that one army uses the red cards and one army uses the black cards. This can be expanded even more by using the suits if the game has more than two armies in the battle. The deck containing the cards that represent all forces in the game is shuffled before the Magic phase, the Movement phase and the Missile Fire phase. As you flip cards in each phase you activate one unit appropriate to the phase you are in. If you are in the Magic phase and you flip over a card assigned to your side, then you could have one of your mages cast a spell. If the card was revealed in the movement phase you would move one of your units and if the card was revealed in the missile phase you would fire one of your missile fire units.
Unless specified in the unit description you must designate a card for each individual unit. As the game progresses you will remove and add cards to the deck based on the units you have available in the game. A unit that is locked in melee does not get a movement card so that card is pulled out before the movement phase. If the unit survives and is able to move later in the game you will add the card back. As units are killed off their cards are removed from the deck.

The rulebook is over 230 pages with over 50 general use spells that any type of magic user can use along with specific spells for Dark Elves, Demons, Dwarves, High Elves, Lizardmen, Undead, Orc or Goblins, Ratmen and Ogres that only they can use. There are also rules for special items like the Chinese Nest Of Bees rocket launchers and Dwarven Gyro-fighters. The Bestiary section includes over 70 races and creatures to field. Everything from Elves to the deadly Troll Centaurs can be fielded and as new miniatures are released we will be adding stats to the Bestiary page on our web site. Players are encouraged to contact us if they have a unit that is not listed in the rules and we will gladly add them to the Bestiary.

I hope you'll give us a try. We have been play testing and revising for over 8 years now and have had nothing but positive responses from people that have played. Check out our facebook page to see some of the pictures of games we have run.

Thanks for that,  Ron - really appreciated  8)

Sounds interesting - I must say though that I'm a die-hard Warmaster fan, so this will have to go some to convince me  ;)

I'm not really a Faceache user either - so if you can post stuff here (or on a blog or G+ or something) you're way more likely to grab my attention...dunno about anyone else though  :)
