Just about to start painting some AU5 Austrian Hussars for 1866 (Bohemia) and would welcome advice on what uniforms are represented by the sculpts. From my limited knowledge I believe they should be wearing a white tunic with slung Atilla. Is this correct? If not, any alternatives?

I think your assumption is absolutely correct, and it is how. I have had mine painted. However, I think (I find it difficult to tell for sure in this scale!) that the figure is modelled wearing the Attila and with the pelvises slung. I think you can therefore make your own choice, but a paint job produces a great result either way. If I recall correctly the North Star Miniatures site 1866 section has excellent details for the Hussar regiments' distinctions of this period.

Many thanks Mollinary. I was a bit thrown because I also thought the figures were sculpted wearing the Attila but I'll follow your advice and go with white.
Thanks for the tip on the North Star site too, very helpful. I've got the Osprey book but it's not that detailed on the campaign dress. Unfortunately I can't find a copy of Stuart Sutherland's book - maybe it will be reprinted some time.

Don't mention it. Just been doing a bit of thread necromancy, as I was sure that Leon had posted some piccies, including one of some of my hussars, from the book John Dz and I put together on Wargaming the opening battles of 1866. If you go onto the General Discussion area, Leon started a thread called "The Austro-Prussian War of 1866: The Opening Battles" on 7 April 2013. That first post contains a picture of the 1866 Hussars, so you can judge for yourself.

Will definitely go for the white tunics having seen your figures.
Nigel Smith's The Armies of 1866 shows an illustration of a an Austro-Hungarian hussar (in black and white) wearing the white tunic with a dark attilla slung. The breeches are also dark.

HB. Yes, true. But the Austrian Hussars were still wearing a variety of uniforms with distinctive regimental colours in 1866. The PDF on the North Star 1866 site shows uniform details for all the Hussar regiments in 1866, and thus allows you to produce the riot of light blue, dark blue, red, green, white etc that makes these troops so attractive.

Gosh you're slow these days my Caledonian mucker! In answer to your question concerning a slung pelvis, it is of course what auto correct software thinks(!?) is a more plausible construct than a slung pelisse. Go figure! And I have no intention of rising to the bait concerning that mythical beast, the M1866 Werndl carbine. That said, I would certainly recommend getting a few of the beautifully modelled dismounted hussars with their muzzle loading Extracorpsgewehr versions of the Lorenz! ;)

The dismounted firing figures are excellent, base them up with a riderless horse and a horse holder and the effect is excellent.
Thanks for the tips on the dismounted hussars. Will definitely get some on my next order. Meanwhile, making my usual slow progress on the mounted versions.
