Title: Resin Aquarium ships
Post by: GrumpyOldMan on 03 February 2014, 10:26:20 PM
Hi All

Went past my local pet shop and they were having a clearance. Picked up two ships for the equivalent of 9 quid. They were Aqua One brand and they look like a good match for 10mm.

There was one listed as a Fishing Boat but which strikes me as a tug at 22 x 7 x 8cm and another listed as a Passenger ship at 33 x 6 x 9cm. The latter is more modern and may have to have some work done for my purposes.

Cheers

Great find Vic.  I have scratch build most of my ships -  Does anyone know if these are imported into the UK?

I said this before on the forum (cue yawns) ...There is a market out there for 1/150- 1/148 N gauge small ships .  I have looked at the few and expensive  Railway N gauge offerings and a few resin ships - lighters, generic gunboats, MTBs and small "passenger" type  craft would do very well.

The Pendraken Vietnam patrol boat is a very fine model.  That's the standard you want.   I am hoping to game the Mad Mike's campaign in the Congo (with Falklands range) and am scouring toyshops for small plastic motor boats that would fit to 10mm

Actually Aqua One is also a UK firm (ships made in China though) http://www.aquaone.co.uk/homepage_uk.php (http://www.aquaone.co.uk/homepage_uk.php). They might be able to tell you if available and stockists.

Not a great picture, attached below.

Have been rethinking the tug, actually looks like 1/125 ,about half way between 10mm and 15mm  :-\. Maybe I'll leave off any identifying guns, etc and leave it to work with both scales  :).

I don't want to stifle your campaign at birth, but I agree with you. I'd love to see some more Pendraken water craft. A good ships boat would be useful for gaming about 200 years or more.

Vic, forgot to ask - how heavy are they? Some years ago I picked up a 1/300 (near enough) fish tank cargo ship- but it was really heavy. - part of the "sit on the bottom" requirement.  This weight can make postage prohibitive.

They have limited stockists in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

They are reasonably light, they are hollow cast and the castings are about 5-7mm thick. Seem to be cast from normal Polyurethane Resin, still I'll where a mask and work outside when I'm cutting bits off  :). I've found a card model barge at http://www.papershipwright.co.uk/coaling-barge/ (http://www.papershipwright.co.uk/coaling-barge/) to go with the tug. Might still do some drastic surgery yet on the tug and will definitely move the passenger ship back in time. Will lose what looks like a helipad at least  :).

Maybe I can make it look like the Panay  :D :-

Thanks GOM, the X lighter in this collection is close to 1/150 scale.  I have an unfinished scratch build intended for VBCW.

Just an update on availability- I emailed Aqua Pacific and asked if they do "mail order" to regions where they have no retail outlets.

Vic has confirmed they are lightweight, so shipping the ships becomes a viable option both inside and outside the UK

Will keep forum posted.

Right campers, there is the G2 int.

Aqua do not do mail order. period.  A friendly bloke called Steve referred me to  info@fishpetsreptiles.co.uk   based in Ibstock , Leicestershire. UK
telephone 01530263746.

Alternatively - if you live in Oz, go to your local petshop.

URL to go with the email address, for the more technologically challenged forum members.

Looking at no-one in particular ...

.... Techno  :P

http://www.fishpetsreptiles.co.uk/

They do, however, seem to only stock spares for filters, pumps, heaters and the like. Unless I'm missing a tab or option somewhere. Possible they can order stuff in though.

Yes, I could not find it on their site, so emailed them with the precise request.  The reply came in almost right away.  They have the item Code 36669 passenger ship wreck in stock.

Cost including UK postage is £11.49.   Vic (GOM) obviously got a good deal at £9 for two ships!

Well done, there may be a "summa cum laude" in this for you from St Scroungers College  :D.

Yes, I happened past the large chain Pet Shop as I was going to get a replacement micronuke cooking apparatus and, being in the habit of sticking my snout in dark and dank corners, I went inside and, lo and behold, there was a 50% off clearance sale on aquarium decorations!! It would have cost me about £18 normally. I just regret not getting the submarine wreck now, the holes could have been easily filled  :(.

There you go.  Two options;-

One.We can pay the whack in the UK

Two - relocate the entire Pendraken operation, designers and client base to Oz.

Seriously - In terms of value, the Pendraken corvette is £14, .But I must stress that the sculpt for a  fish tank decoration is way below what we expect in resin 1/150 models.

I buy the Model boat magazine

This months set of plans a 1/150th WW2 Monitor
last months was a RAF Tender

They always seem to have plans in each issue

Which is worse....Gales and rain, or the constant worry about being attacked by Drop Bears.  ;)

This is interesting.  1/150 scale is unusual scale.  Are the builds difficult?

I propose the United States as a compromise between UK and Oz.

I always thought that Oz was the compromise between UK and USA  :P :P :P, dropbears notwithstanding.

(Hint for US types - look at Blue Ribbon Pet Supplies, not many ships but lots of buildings and bridges. Available through http://www.lnt.com/ (http://www.lnt.com/) not all in stock but may be able to order, might try them out with International Checkout.
