Title: undercoat spray
Post by: Jim Ando on 17 January 2014, 03:35:09 PM
Hi

I usually undercoat by hand which is a pain in the ass, so I`m going to try the old graffiti artists best mate.

Can you buy this stuff from Halfords/diy shops or do I have to buy it from the evil empire for a kings ransom.

Can anyone give me a shove in the right direction.

Cheers

Jim.

I've used Halfords Matt Black/Matt White spray paint for years very successfully. Never used the primers but have heard good things about them.

Just be careful not to get SATIN as its shiny and doesn't hold a coat of paint too well.

The Humbrol spray undercoats are surprisingly good.

I wasn't too impressed by Halford's black spray.

Recently got a can of Kobra black from Amazon under £5 - it seems good paint.

I've been getting the stuff from Hobbycraft, I think it's called PlastiKote. I'd say it's comparable to the Evil ones, the only difference I'd say is that the GW ones have a slightly narrower nozzle spray which means less wastage, but the other ones are cheaper so I reckon it's worth it.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_158519_langId_-1_categoryId_165505

500ml for £7.49

Works for me

I do use the white for some stuff but the black for most.

I use Vallejo matt varnish if hand painting (usually protecting decals while completing the model) and Humbrol matt spray varnish

Unless you have a local Halford's.

Looked at this a little while back - almost twice the price of Halfords once I factored in postage.

I realise that not everyone has a free bus pass and a Halfords 15 mins away by bus!!

Well Halfords is about 5 minutes away from me and more than happy with the spray they sell

I tend to buy the following from the local hardware shop :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/HYCOTE-XUK027-Aerosol-Spray-Paint/dp/B003MI0JOY

£3.99 a can and I have been pretty happy with the results.   I've previously used GW's
matt black undercoat (which is very good) but far too expensive (double the price).

Halfords 5 mins  away and hobbycraft 15min away.

Spoilt for choice then.
