Last year we had 195 top quality entries, and we're really looking forward to seeing what this year holds! Hopefully, it will be even bigger and better, with more entries and more prizes!
As always, the competition will be running throughout February, with the closing deadline being at midnight on Fri 28th Feb. That gives everyone loads of time to get their orders in and get their entries painted up!
The basic rules will be the same as last year, with the usual 7 categories, so there should be a suitable home for every entry! As with last year, each entry is allowed 2 images, except for the 'Open Army!' category, which is allowed up to 5 images.
Categories:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base, and pre-1900.
Foot - 20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base/movement tray.
Mounted - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base/movement tray.
Vehicle - Single vehicle on or off base.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Anything Fantasy or Sci-Fi oriented, maximum base/movement tray size of 60x60mm
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm. Includes single figures, artillery bases, command stands, etc.
Open - Army! - Armies, Units, Dungeons, whole table setups, anything!
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules - Please Read!
- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
1. You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome!
2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below). You can also combine several shots into a montage if you wish, but still limited to two overall images. If you have any difficulty posting pics, they can be emailed to Pendraken and we'll put them up for you. We'll also be linking some good photo tutorials closer to the start date.
3. The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo! You can also still put several images together into a montage if you would prefer that.
4. All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
5. Entries should have been completed in the last 12 months.
6. You can post WIP photo's if you wish, and you can also post extra photo's of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
7. The winners will be decided by a team of judges (to be announced very soon!). Entries will be judged on the painting first and foremost, but remember that effective basing can make a nice entry look even better.
8. Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
9. Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics. Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used.
We're working hard to get some great prizes lined up, both from Pendraken and elsewhere, and we'll be announcing those in the next week or so! Remember, the opening day for entries is 1st Feb, which gives you just enough time to get any figures ordered, grab your brushes and get busy! We've seen some great work displayed on the Forum over the past 12 months, so we're hoping to see some of it making an appearance in the Competition!
If there's any questions, let us know!

I had better get practicing....at taking photos... never mind painting :-[
Excellent :). Not a cat in hells chance of winning but fun looking at all the great entries.
Looking forward to taking part I've got quite a few entries lined up from anglo zulu war to world war ii not that I stand any chance with the painting skills of some of this forums members
take care
andy
I shall enter.
The quality last year was incredible. Will spread the word.
This is my New Year's mission :-bd
I have also just completed my new "man cave" which will make photography considerably easier :D
Yes!
I need a 'drive' for getting some stuff painted!
I am in with an Aliens, a Colonial Marines and possibly a Dark Elf army I am working on :D
Is fsn in with all his 5,000 Centurions? :d
Drooling over is not painting :P :P :P
Count me in again this year, perhaps alien v predator or my bugs army, for something different, and a better camera.
Cool - the painting comp is always good fun.
Hope to pick up a place this year, after last year's drought :'(
Though having just seen the base size limitations, some of my recent stuff isn't going to be eligible :(
Does it count if I only finish it this year? (Started my BKC Germans about 2 years ago, only got 3 tiger tanks to go!)
Otherwise, it's always good to see and get inspiration from the entries.

What size bases are they on?
Cool. Something to consider perhaps for the next time: It would be nice to have a category between single base and army for multi-stand units (e.g. Warmaster, Black Powder etc) or allow bigger multi-stand units in what is currently the single stand category. It seems to me, looking at a whole unit (rather than a single stand) is where 10mm stands out. On the other hand a unit will be "drowned out" in the army category.
started prep work on some entries last night. I think it will be a tough one the standard will be even higher this year.
Best of luck to all!
I dont think Kev should be allowed to enter! :P

My SciFi / Dark Elves are all 80*40 :(
I'd second the vote for a unit class, Regiment, Brigade, etc of 20-50 figures since that is where 10mm truly shines.
That said I'll see if I can find a decent colour guard stand or two to submit.
The unit category has been requested before, but we're wary of diluting the categories down too much. And it means finding more companies to put in prizes as well!
A close look at last year's winners and you'll see entries with two bases rather than one and more than two images submitted so I imagine the judging is quite relaxed so long as entries stay within the figure numbers allowed. :-\ I wouldn't want folk not entering for the sake of a few millimetres or the lack of a movement tray.

We usually allow a couple of bases to be in shot, as long as they are still within the maximum base sizes in the rules. There shouldn't be any with more than two images though, except for the 'Open - Army' category which is allowed 5, or if they've created a montage image themselves.
Ah, my mistake. A montage counts as one image.
An idea might be just to limit figure numbers. Last year some of my figures weren't even based :o but the rules stipulate bases and movement trays.

Good luck to you all.
Hi Andy,
Good to see you again.
I'm in, just one question I know it says only Pendraken figures but in the open base category would it be ok to include a terrain piece from another manufacturer as long as all the figures are Pendraken?
Cheers

Yep...me too :'( Having another carck this weekend now I have daylight bulbs.
Just a quick point re daylight bulbs. (Presuming you're on about the photography rather than painting Gareth :-\)
Quite a lot of digital cameras have colour compensating features already built in....So you can get rid of the 'orange' colour cast caused by old style 'filament' bulbs...and the greeny tint when you use the energy saving type.
Maybe worth folk checking their manuals. (Says someone who almost never checks manuals and just presses random buttons until he finds what he wants. ;) :P)
Cheers - Phil.
Most digitals have a manual white balance these days as well which can help a lot
I find daylight bulbs aren't that great for photography, not bright enough.

I was planning on having something along these lines ready for the Comp, but time got the better of me unfortunately.
There is a similar set up on ebay for @£26
Painting one command stand is taking as long as two regiments. Wish there was time to give all my figures this kind of care.
Hi Leon,
In the fantasy section it states max 60x60.
Since I play Warmaster, could I submit three bases? (3 x 20x40) Or do I have to photograph just one?
Cheers,
Gareth

You could pop the 3 in a movement tray, as long as it's within the 60x60mm guidelines?

Yeah Leon said pretty much the same thing; it won't be bigger than 60x60 (60x40 in actual fact) so all good :-bd
I also did another entry using a movemente tray of 50x50

I´m preparing the brushes, but I have some questions...
QuoteFoot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base, and pre-1900.
Al my units have 18 models! :'(
Can we show a little flexibility in this case? :D
Another one: if I do an entry on the Open-Army! category, can I use one or two of these units in order to participate on other categories?
Less than 45 days!!! Tempus fugit!
Thanks Hetairoi ;)
The issue I have is that I want to submit what I'll use rather than create soemthing "special".
I wll either field a single 40x60 base or three 20x40s pushed together.
Also, might I ask a favour?
DON'T ENTER!!! :P ;) :)

Yes, that's fine, you can enter the same figures in the Army category, and the individual categories.
Can we have a separate category for Mongols this year? ;)
I will not be entering the painting competition as I do not posess the "Shrinking Machine" that I am suire the winners last years used to shrink a well painted 28mm Figures down to 10mm, as I am sure they could noy have got that level of detail on a 10mm casting.
I shall enjoy drooling over the said shrunken figures though :)
actually i think if we have a 'growth machine' that transformed Pendraken figures into larger scales then there may be more than a few humbled 28mm manufacturers out there....

also if you feel your painting skills don't hold up well under close scrutiny enter some 'in action' army shots into the 'anything goes catergory'. Ranks and ranks of 10mm on a well presented battlefield always look good.
It is also nice to see painted examples from the different ranges. The more people who enter the better.
Is it februari already? The stuff is piling up you know....
:P :P :P :P
Oh Bugger. it I say I will enter it every year and never do But I'm going to give the command stand bit a go. First chap painted this evening, Medieval of course :)
Is the 'Open Anything goes' section as mentioned in the 'Prize's section', the same as 'Open Army' section as mentioned in the 'Painting Competition Section'
What I'm saying is, can a command stand be entered in the 'single Stand section' anything goes' as well as the 'anything goes section' as the word 'Army' has been added in the 'Painting Section and omitted in the 'Prizes section':-\ :'( :o
Thanks for any advise from the organizers

Thanks for the query, the different titles was a typo by me when I've copied the 2013 Prizes thread as a base. The 'Single Base' category is for anything under 100x100mm base size, and the 'Army' category is for anything over that.

I have decided to continue a small tradition on my part from the last two years.
Only units painted during February shall make up my entries.
The reason... Its more of a challenge. Its an incentive to do something different and, most importantly...
You lot MUST be bored of my usual stuff by now! :P
I have a list of things to paint which come February I aim to start on. Nothing like a deadline to focus the mind :).
And the 2014 Painting Competition is now officially open!
Good luck to everyone who enters, I'm really looking forward to seeing the entries as they come in.

Good photos are all about good light, from at least 2 directions. Even using a white sheet or bit of cardboard to reflect light back onto the models to reduce the harsh shadows really helps
Alternatively post some of the bad pics & there are several here who can offer advise on how to improve them

Goat_Majors are particulary impressive, how did you do the flag for the 3rd Dragoons - I have been trying to work out how to make patterned curtain material look good
With some difficulty Paul! I initially tried to draw on the hatching but it just looked wrong and out of scale. So in the end I just went for a darker braided edge and a flat centre. I think I worked up from foundry dark chestnut, foundry dark scarlet and Vallejo scarlet in a few layers. The overall effect seemed to work - but it's one of the less interesting American flags !

To be honest I cannot believe that it has already come round to Pendrakens annual painting competition, and once I sorted through what I'd painted during 2013 continuing up to the end of February it's quite amazing to be honest I've actually managed to be able to enter 27 entries within the following categories. Hi Guys - can anyone help a useless luddite!
After many months of lurking I thought I should start to post more as I work my way through a couple of ACW armies. What better way to start than entering the painting competition I thought. I didn't take into account that my knowledge of blogs, etc. is v. poor. I worked out that I should open a photobucket account and upload my pictures there. Job done. Unfortunately, I need step-by-step instructions to get them onto the forum!! Check out my first effort under the single base entries!
Somebody, please take pity on an old duffer.
Thanks in anticipation...

And thanks for the edit in my case as well. :D
I've just edited in all the various pictures we've been sent for the competition, so please make sure to check your entry to make sure you're happy with it! I've also gone through all the others and resized where necessary, so let me know if there's any I've missed!
Only a few hours to go now, and we've passed last years total so far. Another 2 entries and we'll have broken the 200 entry mark!

Vehicles thread was nice and quiet, now on it's third page!
Should have entered my Argentine Panhards too! ;)
I planned an indian chariot... But there´s not enough time!!! :'(
QuoteBut there´s not enough time!!!
I think we're all in that situation :(. There's always next year...
I was going to enter a vehicle, but realised all the vee's I have were painted prior to the last year! Really should have sorted the Birch Gun I got only a couple of months back! Lovely entries from everyone, reminds me why I failed to enter last year :D
More enteries than last year and still an hour to go ;D
Some truely amazing entries and an incredible range. I'm already thinking about at least 2 new periods >:( :) :D
Good luck to all, especially the judges :)

Definitely! Note to self: next year remember that there are two birthdays and a half-term in February! ~X(
If it's not finished by the end of January, don't even think about it! 8-}

Well, one entry in!
Fingers crossed I can get the Raptor Riders sorted this evening :-/
Cheers!
Meirion
Raptor Riders and two other entries squeezed in! I had plans for - and had started - something for almost every category! Maybe if I start now I might be ready in time next year... :-\
;)
And the winner for cutting it finest is ....

My offering, a KVII which may hold a record in that earlier in the year it went from letterbox to painting to wargame table in less than eight hours.
Chris
Well done Chris, 7 whole seconds to spare :-SS ;D
It has been fun watching the late rush on a Saturday morning in NZ
There's still a little time to get your entries in, I'll be locking the entry threads in a couple of hours, just to give our US friends time to get their entries sorted.

I'm sure they do, but the guys on the west coast might have just got in from work, so we try to give them a couple of hours just to get their entries photo'd and up. There's not usually many that come in after midnight, but we have had a few previously.

Yep!

That word could be a boon to writers of Limericks. What does it mean?
No idea, just like the sound of it. Probably missing an umlaut!
Über (German pronunciation: [ˈyːbɐ] ( listen), sometimes written ueber, uber or uuber, is a German language word meaning "above", "over" or "across". It is a cognate of both Latin super and Greek ὑπέρ (hyper). It is also sometimes used as a hyphenated prefix in informal English, usually for emphasis. It is properly spelled with an umlaut.
Ah, put an extra b in by mistake! ;D

Yes, take your time! The only important thing is that you take the right decision...

Says a man with two medals already! :P
The key to win, young padawan, is enter the categories where Matt, Kev or BH62 do not... ;)
What a wonderfull works!!
I entered every thread this year master.
Only 13 entries in Twentieth Century foot, but some really good stuff in all threads! The judges will have a headache this year. ;D

How can you tell the difference? Just alter the labels, and there you go!

;D ;D , Your army entry is excellent Hetairoi, i have never painted anything modern so i keep away from those categories , i'm really impressed with the high standard of all the 20th century entries , the cammo painting especially , awesome work. I know we say it every year, but this one has turned out to be the best in my opinion, some superb work.
I'm struggling to pick my favorite entry, just too many of them, good luck judges ;D ;D,
kev
definitely another step up from last year some really excellent entries. I particularly like the open army category some high quality painting on mass (if I start now I may have something to enter next year :)).
Good luck everyone, glad I'm not a judge!
Hi everybody
I would just like to wish everyone good luck with the competition
take care
andy
Good luck all (fingers crossed).

luck? This is about work, effort, constant self-development and bribery! ;) ;D
Good luck to everybody!
No, just bribery pure and simple :D ;). But good luck to all involved and some simply stunning entries this year 8).
Shouldn't we know something already?... :-SS
Oh my God! Judges minds have exploded! :o
Maybe Leon's had to line all the clones up to use all their fingers to count up the scores?

I got confused with time differnces and date lines and thought it was tomorrow ... so I'm going to miss out on the nervous anticipation ;D
I posted something similar on another thread, but had to double check I wasn't on the wrong day etc :-S
Phew, that was a bit of a rush! Huge apologies for the delay on the announcement, I think I'm trying to do too much at once today!

Far too close to call :-SS
All very impressive entries (except for a couple perhaps :-[), and they didn't place :o
