Title: Superglue distaster
Post by: fsn on 03 January 2014, 08:22:05 AM
OK so I was tired last night. First day back in work, and I shouldn't probably have been doing anything more complicated than spraying on an undercoat ... but for some reason I decided to construct some 25pdrs (5 pieces Pendraken! What do you think we (the pips under the Pendraken dental plate) are? - MAFVA?  >:() Anyway, I dutifully went through a dry run, put them together and then superglued them.

Come down this morning and they look wrong. All up on themselves and with only a tiny barrel (are we now officiallty allowed to call that a "Leon"?). However, they have been superglued together.

Any nice gentle ways of deconstucting my battery of buggerment? Is my plan B (judicious use of a mallet and then re-order) the only way out?

As my old grandather (who was a merchant seaman on the Arctic convoys) used to say "what they do make for the penny!"

Thank you Mr Cooman.

Should have known there was something like that available.  :-[

When I've had 'difficulties' with superglue in the past, I've found that copious amounts of the Missus's nail varnish remover does the trick! Admittedly my 'difficulties' have normally involved me sticking myself to something small, metal and usually from Pendraken!!  :D

Acetone/Nail varnish remover will dissolve 'fresh' superglue.....You might have to give the guns a bit of a soak if the glue has really 'gone off'.

(Pour the acetone into an old glass jam jar, that you can put a lid on....otherwise it'll evaporate....do it outside somewhere, so the 'fumes' don't get to you as well.)

BUT BUT BUT.....Only if the guns are entirely metal !!.....
Acetone with plastic is a complete 'no-no'.....and if there are any resin bits, I think the resin might be affected too.

Cheers - Phil.

I find wearing a latex glove helps to prevent little embarrassments like that.  :)

Heat will cause a super-glue bond to fail, but don't use too much otherwise you will melt the metal parts of course!  :'(

Try boiling water for a start and see if that's enough to do the trick. Costs nothing so worth a try.

I think I heard somewhere that putting them in the freezer over night would make the bond shatter although I dint know what it would do to the metal

I've used a spell in the freezer followed by hot water - especially to get figures off bases. It sort of works - but often needs a bit of encouragement - which might not be the best with artillery.

Its a while since I put together Pendraken 25pdrs - but IIRC the parts seemed reasonably obvious in the order they go together. I do seem to remember part building the guns, then letting bits dry then adding the final bits.

Put them in the oven for 10 minutes at 110°C.

I've found a spell in near boiling water works a treat. You may need a few goes at it, but with an artillery piece I would think it would come apart rather easily.
