I asked a similar question at our club recently. If you are running the Imaginations campaign from it then you'll need about 12 units for each side.

Each unit is 4 squarish bases worth of troops (Exception for Artillery which is 1 base per unit) with a 3 to 1 ratio of Infantry to Cavalry or vice versa.

According to their forum, for theaters that didn't use cavalry (SYW in Canada for instance) a lot of people use the ratio of Regular Infantry vs Irregular infantry.

I do have points for the units I can dig out for army building if you wish, but so long as you have armies with about the same number of units, you'll be fine.

Hi Conster,

Have you got the free Maurice Lite rules? These explain how the basing works.

A reasonable starting point is 10-15 units a side, although the rules do say that you should have no more than two dozen units a side (larger battles are recommended to be played as multiple handed affairs, in effect playing multiple games side-by-side).

As Genom said, the campaign rules require a split between cavalry and infantry of no more than 3:1 in either direction, but this can be ignored for historical scenarios.

If you want to be more historical, the main rulebook has guidelines for converting historical battles into Maurice scenarios, accompanied by three examples. One is Brandywine which has a converted OOB of:-

American
2 units of Pennsylvania militia
11 units of continentals
1 unit of cavalry
2 units of artillery

British
1 unit of Guards
1 unit of Light infantry
1 unit of grenadiers
7 units of regular British infantry
3 units of Hessians
1 unit of light dragoons
2 units of artillery

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Jim

The army lists posted are a good start. As mentioned earlier, each unit consists of four bases, except for artillery which is based individually. You will have to decide on a basing convention to work out total figures required. My preference is 1 inch square bases (makes range and movement measurements very simple with a tape measure). I put 2 cavalry (in 1 rank) or 6 infantry (in 2 ranks) to a base. Therefore each unit consists of 8 cavalry figures or 24 infantry and looks very nice in 10mm. For irregular units I use half as many figures, scattering them around the base to give the impression of skirmishers. This gives you 12 figures for an irregular infantry unit. This is just a rough guide so base them how you wish. Maurice is a great game. The free download is not bad but only a shadow of the full game.
