Title: WWI Project
Post by: fateeore on 27 December 2013, 02:35:52 PM
Having painted some British and German figures earlier in the year. Here's a few of them...

The figures are individually based on washers, and the bases are magnetized to allow for them to be used in skirmish games and mass combat.

I decided it was time to get on with giving them a battlefield to fight over.

This is a top down of the first completed tile...

The tile is a one foot square, edged with magnetic tape (which will hopefully hold the tiles in place during play)

A few more close up pics...

The plan is that the barbed wire, emplacements, trees, ruins etc will be on smaller bases to give the set up more flexibility, and make storage easier.

Thanks for looking.

peace)

Yeah. The trenches are cut out of foam board, the sand bags are milliput, and wood for shoring up the trenches and the fire step are mixture of mounting board and plasticard - all housed in a simple wooden frame.

While I wait for the pva glue to dry on the work I have been doing on the 2nd tile, I made 18 bases of barbed wire...

It works out at @ four and a half feet of, or perhaps 20% of what I will need for the finished project.

I have also made a gun pit, but that is just a semi circle of miliput sand bags so it didn't seem worth taking a snap of.

And I looked at the figures I have to paint, and sort of organised in my mind an order to paint them, so I suppose that is a start.

Tuille... the stuff that tutus are made of.

It's about the right scale, but it doesn't hold the paint very well. Though having said that the stuff I bought was dark green and I bought it so I wouldn't need to paint it.... I should probably gone with my first instinct.

Thanks.

The house was done mainly with my new airbrush. For some reason I had the idea that you point the airbrush at the object and tartan paint comes out  :P

Also I added some steps, like scoring the brick work into the card before gluing it all together, when doing the barn.

It's very much a case of learning as I go.

Many years ago, the April edition of Miniature Wargames had an advert for tartan paint. I got very excited at the prospect, and even found myself explaining how such a product could work at the local club by reference to the rainbow then used in Dulux advertising.  :-[

Those infantry are really nicely done.

One question, why are the figures sort of floating on the big base? with them both being textured it would look much better if you couldn't see the cast on bases of the figures.

They are magnetised to allow for casualty removal, and to allow they to be used in skirmish games.

btw, that is a not the cast on base of the figure but an M4 washer.
Title: Re: WWI Project
Post by: fred. on 12 January 2014, 05:45:56 PM
Aah, that's a clever idea. I think I would have left holes/depressions in the main sabot base for the washers to fit into so that they are much less obvious - a bit like the Warbases 28mm ones. Even if the holes where only in the basing material they would sit down lower.
Title: Re: WWI Project
Post by: fateeore on 12 January 2014, 06:31:44 PM
It's still very much a work in progress,

And while I take on board your observations and suggestions, I suspect the issue is the colour I have selected to paint the washer contrasting too sharply with the colour I have chosen for the base.
Title: Re: WWI Project
Post by: Leman on 12 January 2014, 07:04:19 PM
I had a go at that - they are of course British penny bases and Warbases penny slots.

Yes, it may be with a bit of the paler brown on the sides they will blend in more. Also the close up photo, from a low angle is very different to how they will look in a game.

I appreciate the suggestion about the warbases, the problem is that the bases will be used for other things, like a 15mm WWII project that occasionally gets some love, and those figures are based on pennies.

The wooden planking needs painting but other than that it's done.

I've spent the week flitting around like the proverbial blue bottomed fly, half making woods, and half painting soldiers and half researching unit organizations and half.... I blame coffee - http://www.trinity.edu/jdunn/spiderdrugs.htm - it didn't help that for two days I couldn't find my tape measure due to my youngest using it as light sabre, quite why I didn't think to look in the linen basket first I don't know.

So now I have 3' by 1' of battlefield - I'm not sure what that equates to in London Buses or Football piitches - by I do know that I have one more tile to do and I have completed the front line.
