Title: Help with translation (Belgian Army Text in French)
Post by: Si Tyler on 18 December 2013, 10:22:54 PM
Can someone provide the technical interpretation of this.  Google translate is too literal and I didn't do French at school

Regards

The firepower of the units, under command of C recce, is insufficiant  to fullfil their essential role of covering  the deployment of the 1st army corps.

It has been decided to transform 1 of the three recce battalions in tank battalions, to reinforce the reserves of leopard tanks reserved for operation blanche.

This solution permits to organize two recce battallions, 1CHCH and 4CHCH and 2 battalions of tanks, 2chch and 3rd lancers

The strikers, drawn/recuperated from 2chch , allow us to carry the equipment of the anti tank platoons of 1chch and 4chch, using 6 strikers per platoon.
The jeep who was initially reserved for the platoon commander, has already been replaced by a partan.

I believ that's it ;)

Having only schoolboy French I may well be wrong but I'd translated the section about the Leopards meaning that the new tank unit would be equipped from Leopards scheduled for wheel maintenance.

I'm sure a native French speaker will be along in a moment to correct one of us!

Thanks Peter,

I had got to this stage in translating:

it was decided to transform one of three reconnaissance battalions into a tank battalion, drawing on the reserve leopard tanks scheduled for the maintenance cycle (I have no idea what Operation Blanche is though !)

This solution will now align two reconnaissance battalions, 1 Ch a Ch and 4 Ch a Ch, and two battalions of tanks, 2nd Chasseurs (2 Ch a Ch) and the 3rd Lancers (3 L).

Which I took to mean that the Corps Covering Force was a strong brigade sized formation (but I couldn't find out how 1e and 2e Jager te Paard now fitted into the equation and they aren't mentioned in the original text so might have to go and do so more digging.  Note that this is from a 1985 summary of the Cav Blindee from here http://www.mil.be/cav/doc/viewdoc.asp?LAN=nl&FILE=&ID=2504 (http://www.mil.be/cav/doc/viewdoc.asp?LAN=nl&FILE=&ID=2504)

Corrections.

(I'm french)

I don't know what "volant de maintenance" means. I translated it "steering wheel" as it is the literal translation, but it could means something else. It main mean "maintenance cycle", but I have never heard of it.
