We're about to start a Longstreet campaign at the South East Scotland Wargames Club. Got these finished and there's more to come soon.
More on my blog at http://dereksweetoys.com/?p=2449 (http://dereksweetoys.com/?p=2449)
Really, really good Derek.
Cheers - Phil
Looking very good. Just completed my first campaign, as a Confederate. Didn't actually win any of the nine battles. Despite this it was good fun and I ended up as a Lieutenant-General with 28 epic points. In another campaign (different opponent) I'm half way through 1863 and Union. This one is going better although I only have two eagles (full colonel). In this campaign I've withdrawn once and in the last battle my opponent began to withdraw, but left his artillery on a ridge blasting away until I ran out of cards, but not troops.
Lovely work 8).
They look great
take care
Andy
Very nice indeed
The amazing thing is that they look good as a unit whilst the figures are really basically (some might say badly) painted.
They look good.
I'm not great at painting, so I just say that everything needs to be viewed at wargaming distance.
I go on the same basis as the great masters. If you go and look closely at some of the world's finest paintings, they're just blobs of colour.
Agree completely. You can paint for accuracy or you can paint for effect - and with a few notable exceptions the latter usually wins out for on-table "look".
I would add the Inverse Effectiveness rule. Those figures that I have lavished the most care and attention on have either been the first to fall underfoot. The ones who have the best paint jobs are the ones who magically attract dice rolls of "1".
That's my excuse anyway.
Looks fine to me!!
Derek, if that's what passes for basic/ bad painting then I despair of my own daubings.
They look the business to me!
Order arrived on Tuesady. Some artillery and my general.

Next on the painting table, loads of infantry.
About the inf : Good folds on the flags... (obsessed, I told you.)

Flags look daft without folds.

Unless you're samurai.
Very impressive guns sir.
Well that's phase one complete. I now need to buy and paint some more toys to get VI Corps for Gettysburg with Fire and Fury.

Great group shot sir!
They do look nice en masse Derek as Lemmey says 8).

That's the plan. To my mind the major strength of 10mm figures is the speed and ease with which you can get the things painted to a standard that is good enough for use in a game.
Mine are certainly nowhere near as well painted as some of the others posted elsewhere in this forum and also some of the ones being done by the other people taking part in our Longstreet campaign. But when they're three feet away on the table they look every bit as good.
Looking good!

That's my philosophy these days Derek. As long they are neat and tidy and consistent and I'm happy with them, that's all that matters :).

Especially at your age Derek.

Aye, I'll drink to that! :)
Like those lots !! :-bd

You're quite right about that. I can't even see the differences between my 10mm toys and the excellently painted ones without using a magnifying lamp.
Very nice indeed Derek 8)
We're going to try out the army level ACW game Altar of Fredom from Iron Ivan Games http://store.ironivangames.com/altaroffreedom.html (http://store.ironivangames.com/altaroffreedom.html)
I've knocked up a prototype sabot to allow me to use three Longstreet stands for a single Altar of Freedom Brigade stand.

Very cool sabot! :D
Very nice...Love the muted colours on the flags
Very neatly done, Derek. That sort of thing can be very tricky to do.

Absolutely agreed :)
More than enough for Longstreet now - I've finished enough toys to do Sedgewick's VI Corps at Gettysburg for Fire and Fury.

Including these generals.

Very nicely done and definitely of a very good wargames standard. The colours are bright and in the right places, not washed out as if painted on non-undercoated figures, the lines are straight, so no problem.
I adopt the '2 feet rule'. If they look okay from 2 feet away and you are happy with them then bo**ocks to the rest.
Nicely done, Derek :)
Yes very nicely done
take care
andy
Superb Derek! 8)
Excellent, Derek. I see you use the time-honoured device of two figures for a divisional commander and three for the corps command.
I am nothing if not original :)
Stage 3 of the ACW plan is now complete. I've got eighteen Brigade sabots finished for Altar of Freedom http://dereksweetoys.com/2014/04/altar-of-freedom-2/ (http://dereksweetoys.com/2014/04/altar-of-freedom-2/)
And they've seen their first action in a refight of the Battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro to the rebels) at the South East Scotland Wargames Club. http://dereksweetoys.com/2014/04/altar-of-freedom-battle-of-stones-river-murfreesboro/ (http://dereksweetoys.com/2014/04/altar-of-freedom-battle-of-stones-river-murfreesboro/)
The Union won and one of my brigades covered itslf with glory in a charge that smashed the Confederate centre and reached the outskirts of Murfreesboro itself.

Very cool!
Very nice indeed 8). Not a period that grabs me at all, but I always enjoy seeing any AAR etc.

It's not a period that grabs me either. But there are some really good ACW games.
I can play three excellent games, each set at a different level, with those toys. Longstreet, Fire and Fury and Altar of Freedom
What size are your sabot bases? I'm enjoying Altar of Freedom as well and I have my figures mounted on 60x30mm bases.

They're 80mm x 40mm. There's three 25mm bases in each sabot.
I've never come across Altar of Freedom. Who produces them?
They're credited Greg Wagman and paper copies are distributed by Iron Ivan Games. Pdfs are available from the website http://www.6mmacw.com/ (http://www.6mmacw.com/)
Wow that is a great site, now bookmarked. Thanks very much. This might at last encourage my erstwhile Union opponenbt to get his 6mm army painted at last.
6mm? You have to go with 10s :)
To be honest, I used my 6mm figures to test the rules and liked them so much I decided to convert my 10mm ACW project to AoF.
The rules are very easy to grasp but offer enough subtlety to be challenging.
Must admit I do like my Baccus 6 mils. I also like the idea of using the 3mm cut out buildings and fighting Shiloh on a 4'x4'. A most inspiring website (I also have large 15mm armies for use with Longstreet and Regimental Fire and Fury. Got into ACW gaming in 1968 so my interest long predates 10mm figures; besides I have too many other 10mm projects in mind, eg.WW1).
